Destiny Islands Trio

    All Three
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a_connecting_dream_01_khii.png
The central protagonists of the story. Riku, Sora and Kairi are best friends who grew up together on the Destiny Islands.
  • I Will Find You: Riku and Kairi's primary motivation throughout Act 2 is to find their best friend Sora. This is also what prompts the former to leave the Door to Darkness open.
  • Love Triangle: Averted. Though Riku and Kairi develop feelings for each other, they're initially reluctant to act on those feelings due to their inability to talk it out with Sora (who had a crush on Kairi). Its only when they reunite and Sora gives the couple his approval when they begin to act on their feelings for one another.

"Look, I'll be frank. I don't care about light or darkness. I'll walk my own path, even if that means bending the rules. I'll pave it with my own hands if I have to."
The main protagonist of Antipode. Riku inherits the Keyblade as fate intended and inadvertently dooms his home in his desire to see something greater than his island life. A headstrong youth, Riku gradually learns to look past himself and grows into the hero the worlds need him to be.
  • Abusive Parents: Implied. Riku shivers when Elastigirl brings up the topic of his parents, and its implied that his lack of a healthy home life played a big factor in his eagerness to leave the islands. note
  • Anti-Hero: Starts off a brash, arrogant and irresponsible youth, with his primary redeeming factor being his dedication to his friends. He gets better.
  • Brutal Honesty: To the Queen of Hearts.
The way I see it, you're just a fat, bad-tempered old tyrant and-
  • Character Development: Initially, he cared little for his responsibilities as Keybearer, desiring only to explore new worlds and reunite with his friends. Seeing Pleasure Island fall to darkness was a wake-up call for him.
    • At first, Riku viewed Donald and Goofy with disdain and used them as a free ticket to other worlds. As he saw how they stuck with him in spite of his recklessness and selfishness, he grew to value them as companions.
  • Commonality Connection: Riku quickly befriends Elsa over their shared struggles, namely with controlling their powers and running away from their friends in order to avoid hurting them.
  • Cool Board: His Keyblade Glider takes the form of a hoverboard.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: After using a bit of darkness near the end of the first act, Riku began to have problems with keeping the darkness under control. Releasing too much of it does open up the possibility of it taking over, but actively trying to suppress it actually doesn't make things better. In the end, though it took him over a year to master it (and at one point before then it nearly consumed him, forcing Naminé to shatter his heart to save him), he's able to accept the darkness as a part of him and uses it for good.
  • Deadpan Snarker: This is Riku we're talking about.
  • I Will Find You: The reason why Riku refuses to close the Door to Darkness is because Sora is missing.
  • The Promise: Promised to Kairi that if they find a way to bring back their world, he won't set foot on it until they find Sora.
If we find a way to bring back the worlds, I won't set foot on the islands again. Not until we find him. Home just wouldn't be the same unless we were all there together.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Silver after his betrayal.
You told Jim that you saw greatness in him. Said the same thing to me. We trusted you. Heck, I even kind of looked up to you. But, you're just another Maleficent.
  • Refused the Call: Riku initially cared little for his responsibilities as Keybearer, desiring only to explore new worlds and find his friends. He gets better.
  • Sadistic Choice: In the ending of The Antipode, Riku has to choose between closing the Door to Darkness, thereby restoring the words at the cost of potentially never seeing Sora again, or leaving the Door open, thereby allowing the Heartless to roam free until they find Sora. He chooses the latter and much of the series explores the consequences and aftermath of this selfish decision.
  • Taking the Bullet: When a Brainwashed and Crazy Elsa launches a blast of ice at her beloved sister Anna in a fit of rage, Riku shields her from the blow, having his heart frozen in the process.
  • True Companions: Riku and Elsa are this. Both being lost souls who isolated themselves from their friends and loved ones out of fear of hurting them, they find kindred spirits in each other almost immediately upon meeting. This is cemented when Elsa directly threatens Xemnas on Riku's behalf. Overlaps with Platonic Life-Partners.
  • Younger Than They Look: Played for Laughs. Tipo assumes that Riku (who's sixteen) is an old person due to his silver hair, to his dismay.
    Sora

Sora

Click here  to see Sora as a Heartless

Appearances: Act 1: The Antipode|Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left|Side Stories: Doorknobs and Dilemmas,Love's Vagrant,A Heartfelt Holiday|Wavering Wind

"No matter what happens to me, I'll always be there… in your hearts. If you think of me long enough and if you don't forget me… our hearts will be one. No amount of darkness is ever gonna change that."

A close friend of Riku and Kairi and a spirited boy whose kindness is exploited by malicious forces. Despite becoming a Heartless, Sora retains both his sense of self and his dedication to his friends.

  • Adaptational Badass: His Heartless form. The key difference is that Ansem told Sora ahead of time what would happen when he released Kairi's heart and urged him to embrace the darkness, purely out of curiosity for what would happen if someone so kind dove right in. Sora taking that plunge while clinging to his sense of self, coupled with Ven’s heart sticking with him allowed him to maintain a stronger Heartless form. As a Heartless, he reassembles Anti-Form with more expressive eyes and retains his magical prowess.
  • Cool Sword: Was given a Soul Eater by Maleficent.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Maleficent gives Sora a Soul Eater and teaches him green fire magic, which he utilizes during his fight with Riku. Taken further when he becomes a Heartless.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Is dangerously prone to this. Like in canon, Sora sacrifices his life to save Kairi and ends up losing his heart. He remains a Heartless for the rest of the series with only Ventus for company as a voice inside his head. When they are captured by the Organization in All That's Left, Xemnas offers to disable the tracking spell on Riku's sigil if they reawaken Ventus, leaving Sora's fate in the air. Sora agrees immediately, much to Ventus's horror.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Implied by a conversation between Riku and Kairi.
Riku: Oh, c'mon, You know he's got the dorkiest singing voice.
Kairi: Well, okay. Maybe he could use a little more practice, but at least he tried.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: When he sees how close Kairi has grown with Riku over the course of the series, he wholeheartedly supports them. His insecurity from being a Heartless probably helped in this regard.
  • Sharing a Body: As a Heartless, Ventus resides within him as a Spirit Advisor.
  • The Voiceless: Sora is rendered mute as a Heartless and communicates with written notes. Aside from Ventus, only Nobodies or those with a connection to the darkness can hear him speak.

Click here  to see Kairi's Keyblade Armor

Appearances: Act 1: The Antipode|Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left''

A sweet, spunky girl and a close friend of Riku and Sora. Though she initially lacks combat experience, Kairi joins the party on their adventures and grows into a hero in her own right.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Joins Riku, Donald and Goofy prior to the Final Battle of The Antipode and has remained with them ever since.
  • Action Girl: Eventually grows into this, becoming a full-fledged Keyblade Wielder by the end of The Year Between.
  • Death Wail: When the other heroes are seemingly killed at the hands of the Cyclops Titan, Kairi screams into the sky while clutching Riku's Keyblade.
  • The Determinator: Kairi is very much this. After losing her sword in the climax of Fragmented Truths, she spouts this line before summoning her Keyblade.
I don't care what happens to me. I'm not stopping until Riku's safe. You could break my legs, and I'd still keep crawling!
  • Heart Symbol: Her Keyblade Armor has a heart motif, courtesy of its designer.
Edna Mode: Yes, when I learned you were a Princess of Heart, I was hit with an avalanche of inspiration! I simply had to go for something graceful, regal...
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: As a Princess of Heart, her heart is devoid of darkness.
  • It's All My Fault: Though she's aware of Riku's brash choices, Kairi feels guilt for inadvertently pushing him to doom their home by joking with Sora about leaving him behind.
I knew there was a reason why you opened that door, and for a while now, I've wondered if maybe I'm partially responsible for everything that's happened.
  • Official Couple: With Riku as of Act 3's Arendelle arc.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: In Xiruk and Roxas's Fake Memories, Kairi was the "Fake's" accomplice, who was visibly unsettled when the "fake" stabbed 'Sora' with the Keyblade of Heart.
  • Race Lift: Not brought up In-Universe, but the official artwork depicts Kairi with a tanner shade of skin than Riku.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Starting from Fragmented Truths, Kairi begins training with a rapier and learning magic from Donald, eventually becoming a competent fighter in her own right. She summons her own Keyblade during the climax of Fragmented Truths.

The King of Disney Castle and a Keyblade Master.

  • Alliterative Name: Mickey Mouse.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Arrives in the nick of time to help Riku Replica during his final clash with Marluxia and Larxene.
  • The Dreaded: Xemnas and Saïx note that under the right circumstances, King Mickey could very well ruin their plans.
  • Modest Royalty: Insists on being called by his first name despite his title.

    Donald Duck

Appearances: Act 1: The Antipode|Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left

A temperamental magician and King Mickey's Court Mage.

    Goofy

Goofy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goofy_02_khiii_png.png

Appearances: Act 1: The Antipode|Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left

"He might be a knight, but if you peel back armor, he's like a living marshmallow. A clumsy, well-meaning, but completely overbearing marshmallow."
Max Goof
The sweet, loyal Captain of the Royal Knights.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Is this to Max Goof.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As forgiving as he is, Goofy is more than willing to scold those who cross the line, as DiZ and Hades learn.
  • Disney Death: Is seemingly killed at the hands of Dark Elsa. Thankfully it turns out that not only was he alive; he was in another room playing poker.
  • Dogface: He's a humanoid dog.
  • Friendly Enemy: Sits down for a chat with Kronk in Yzma's Lab.
  • Nice Guy: Very sweet and good-natured.
  • Papa Wolf: A subtle example. Being a parent, Goofy is naturally protective of Riku and Kairi, showing discomfort at the thought of bringing them to a pub.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: You know you're a dick when Goofy gives you one of these, as DiZ found out.
Y'know what, DiZ? You're no model citizen yourself. All you do is shout and push away the people closest to ya. Maybe if you behaved more like a person and less like a Heartless, we'd all be able to talk things out and come up with some way to get out of this mess. You've been holed up in your basement for so long that you've forgotten all about how to treat other people. Ever since we got here, you've treated us like tools to boss around. And Xion, your own daughter—why, I wouldn't be surprised if she never came back after all you've put her through! Not even Ansem was as bad as you.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Gives one to Hades in response to the latter's proposed Deal with the Devil.
Oh, hogwash! You make promises too good to be true and don't even mention the price tag! You're even worse than those telemarketers that Maxie warned me about!
  • Team Dad: A kind, protective older guy who looks out for the heroes, many of whom are minors.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Goofy muses on how proud Max will be once they defeat the Titans. Kairi reassures him that Max is already proud of him, even if he won't admit it.

Mirror Trio

    All Three
  • Fake Memories: On the Organization's orders, Naminé gave Riku Replica and XIII a set of false memories to make them think she was their childhood best friend.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Though not evil to begin with, they defect from the Organization in the ending of Fragmented Truths.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Even after leaving the Organization, Xiruk and Roxas retain their Black Cloak black cloaks]] whilst Naminé retains her white dress.
  • Punch-Clock Villains: The Replica and XIII only work with the Organization to get the latter's heart back and in Naminé's case, her compliance in manipulating her friends is out of fear for what her superiors could make her do to them if she refused.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Rather than merging with their original selves (and in the Replica's case, being Killed Off for Real), all three of them get to live their own lives and are alive and well by the time Kingdom Hearts II would take place.
  • True Companions: The three of them are every bit as close as their original counterparts.
    Riku Replica / Xiruk

"Sora, Naminé. I swear I'll set things right."
Click here  to see Xiruk after the Time Skip

Appearances: Act 1: The Antipode|Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left|Side Stories: Uncharted Territories

"Yep. It's like I told Xigbar. I am Riku's replica, but that doesn't mean I can't be someone totally new."
A Replica of the Keybearer given a set of Fake Memories by Naminé. He initially believes himself to be the real Riku who had his life and identity stolen by a "Fake". After learning the truth and deserting the Organization with his friends, The Replica becomes a major ally to the heroes, eventually adopting the name 'Xiruk'.
  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed. Like in canon, the Replica matches his real Riku in terms of combat prowness. However, due to Riku inheriting the Keyblade as fate intended, his Replica also wields a Keyblade.
  • Artificial Human: A Replica of Riku created by Vexen.
  • Ascended Extra: In canon, Riku Replica only appears in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories before being killed off, then brought back and subsequently Killed Off for Real in Kingdom Hearts III. In Antipode, he survives past his Heel–Face Turn and becomes part of the Ensemble Cast.
  • The Atoner: Becomes this after his Heel–Face Turn, most notably when he returns to Hollow Bastion after having ransacked the place in Fragmented Truths.
  • Berserker Tears: During his Final Battle with Riku in Castle Oblivion.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Played for Laughs. This is his reaction when he learns that Louie tried to buy Geppetto's puppet son.
  • Character Development: At first, the Replica despises the real Riku and wants to kill him and reclaim his identity. However, as the real Riku's kindness contradicts the "fake" in his memories, the Replica gradually begins to care for him.
  • Clone Angst: After learning that the identity he fought so hard to reclaim wasn't actually his to begin with, the Replica undergoes an identity crisis.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Well, he is Riku's Replica.
  • Fake Memories: Courtesy of Naminé. His memories mirror those of Riku (with Naminé in place of Kairi) up until Hollow Bastion, where a "replica" of himself stabbed Sora with Keyblade of Heart, thereby turning him into a Nobody, before brainwashing Donald and Goofy into believing him to be the real Riku.
I've known the truth about my memories for almost a year, but no matter how hard I try, I just can't break away. I'll try talking about some of Riku's experiences, but the thing is, they still feel like my experiences, so when I tell those stories, I slip. And sometimes I forget that I wasn't there.
  • Flat "What": Though not spoken word-for-word, this is more-or-less his reaction to learning of the existence of a world inhabited by anthropomorphic cars.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: A sympathetic example. Due to his Fake Memories making him believe that the "fake" stole his identity, the Replica felt immense jealousy towards the real Riku. This died down once he learnt the truth.
    • In light of the revelation that Xemnas is really Terra, Xiruk was sickened when he learnt that despite having abused him and Naminé, Xemnas was nothing but kind towards a young Zexion a decade earlier.
  • An Ice Person: Gains this ability after killing Vexen. Though this comes off as an Informed Ability given that he isn't seen using it until the Climax Boss of All That's Left.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Adopts the name 'Xiruk' in The Year Between.
  • The Promise: One of his most precious memories is his childhood promise to protect Naminé. Even after learning that it was a false memory she planted in his head, he holds on to that promise, as its all he has.
  • The Resenter: Towards the real Riku due to his false memories of him ruining his life. Gradually subverted when Riku begins to treat the Replica with kindness and the latter begins to consider him a friend. This dissipates entirely when he learns the truth.
  • There Can Only Be One: Believed himself to be the real Riku and Riku to be the Replica who stole his identity and Sora's heart. He spends the bulk of Fragmented Truths fighting to reclaim his identity from the "Fake" until he learnt that it was never his identity to begin with.
  • Tragic Villain: A Replica of Riku implanted with traumatic Fake Memories that led him to believe he lost everything at the hands of a "Fake". A victim of circumstance who in the end, just wanted to protect the things that matter.
  • Why Can't I Hate You?: As the real Riku's kindness directly contradicts the "fake" in the Replica's false memories, the Replica gradually grows fond of him.

    XIII / Roxas

XIII/Roxas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roxas_8.jpg

Appearances: Act 1: The Antipode|Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left|Side Stories: Refusal to Change

"Why do I look and sound this way? What does it mean? I wanna know who I am, but every time I think I come closer to understanding, something always sets me two steps back."
Sora's Nobody. On the Organization's orders, his memories are rewritten by Naminé to mold him into an accessory for Riku Replica. After learning the truth and deserting the Organization, he does some soul searching, eventually adopting the name "Roxas" to differentiate himself from Sora.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: As he retained his memories as Sora upon formation, Roxas initially refused to trust the Organization due to his memory of Maleficent's betrayal. Thus Naminé brainwashed him and gave him a shared set of Fake Memories with Riku Replica.
  • Adaptational Name Change: DoubleSubverted. He initially keeps the name 'Sora' but is commonly referred to as simply 'XIII'. Upon learning that the Organization originally intended to name him "Roxas", he adopts the name to set himself apart from Sora.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed. Though he retains his combat prowess, this iteration of Roxas does not wield a Keyblade.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Due to his established friendship with the Replica and Naminé, Roxas only befriend Axel later on in his life (when the former is searching for Sora) and even then, they are more distant. Though he initially found Axel annoying, Roxas gradually grew to trust him, which made his betrayal hurt that much more.
  • Climax Boss: Is fought in the skies of London prior to the Final Battle of Fragmented Truths.
  • Clone Angst: Much like the Replica, XIII initially believes himself to be the real Sora, currently unaware of the original's existence as a Heartless. XIII was lost upon learning the truth and leaves on his own to figure out who he is.
  • Cool Sword: Wields dual Soul Eaters.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: In contrast to his canon counterpart, this iteration of Roxas wields dual Soul Eaters and utilizes pillars of darkness in his attacks.
  • Fake Memories: Shares a set of these with Riku Replica, in which the two of them were childhood friends with Naminé.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In canon, Roxas had no connection with Riku Replica and was an acquaintance of Naminé at most. Here, the three of them are childhood friends, according to his Fake Memories.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Is furious when Aqua saves Xemnas' life for sentimental reasons.

    Naminé

Naminé

Click here  to see Naminé after the Time Skip

Appearances: Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left|Side Stories: Wave of Uncertainty

"It's true. I… never lived on Destiny Islands. I never saw the waves or the sunset or shooting stars… All the memories we shared together were pretend. Just a tragic lie…"
Kairi's Nobody, born when Kairi's heart was freed from Sora's after he turned into a Heartless. She has the unusual ability to rewrite the memories of others, which the Organization exploits, forcing her to manipulate Riku Replica and XIII for their own purposes.
  • The Atoner: After defecting from the Organization, Naminé does everything she can to atone for her past actions.
  • Backstory Invader: Gave both the Replica and XIII's a set of False Memories and made them believe her to be there childhood best friend.
  • Break the Cutie: Is reduced to a sobbing wreck after Xemnas orders her to force the Replica into relieving his traumatic Fake Memories in Castle Oblivion.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Feels awful for manipulating the Replica and XIII at the behest of the Organization, but does so out of fear for what may happen should she refuse.
  • Mysterious Waif: A dainty girl with mysterious powers.
  • Nice Girl: Is very sweet and gentle.
  • Ship Tease: With Xiruk. Even after he learns the truth about his Fake Memories of her, he retains his dedication to protecting her.
  • Shoot the Dog: Upon seeing Riku succumb to darkness during his Final Battle with the Replica, Naminé crushes his heart in a desperate attempt to save them both. This results in Riku being knocked out of commission and sent to the Simulated Twilight Town to recover while Naminé repairs his memories.

Other Protagonists

    Ventus ("Ven")

Ventus ("Ven")

"You saved me once, a long time ago. When I needed it most, you gave me a second chance."

Appearances: Act 1: The Antipode|Act 2: Fragmented Truths|The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left|Side Stories: Unspoken Fears|Wavering Wind

"It's not your fault, okay? Sometimes it's just rough. I used to be a Keybearer, but now I'm just a spectator. All I can really do is talk, and it's not like anyone can hear me besides you and Aqua…"
A spirited young Keybearer who resides within Sora's heart. Ventus served as a guiding light for Sora when he became a Heartless and kept him company as a voice in his head.
  • Nice Guy: Cheerful and kindhearted; Sora couldn't have asked for a more pleasant companion to share a body with.
  • Sharing a Body: Ven is a passenger inside Sora's Heartless. Though deep down, he longs for freedom, Ventus doesn't want to leave Sora until the latter finds a way to regain his humanity. He ends up being forced to separate from Sora anyway when they get captured by Xemnas, leaving Sora incapable of controlling himself for a while.
  • Spirit Advisor: Serves as a Voice of Reason for Sora as a voice inside his head. The only other people who can hear him speak are Aqua and Xemnas.
  • True Companions: Ventus and Sora become this after roughly a year of shared solitude.
  • You Are Not Alone: Tells Sora this not long after he loses his heart.
  • You Killed My Father: Is on the receiving end of this when Marluxia learns in Castle Oblivion that his sister Strelitzia was allegedly killed by Ventus (who was possessed by Darkness at the time).

    Aqua

Aqua

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aqua_khiii_2.png

Appearances: The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left|Side Stories: Love's Vagrant,A Heartfelt Holiday,The Burden of Failure

"Honestly, it's still hard to shake that mindset. My entire life, I've trained to fight for the greater good. And before I fell to the Darkness, everything was so different. Sure, there were threats to the worlds, but nothing that could destroy them. And there were walls keeping them apart. Preserving the balance…"
A Keyblade Master, back in action after a decade of solitude in the Realm of Darkness. She makes her debut in The Year Between.
  • Action Girl: Hasn't lost her edge even after ten years in the Realm of Darkness.
  • Defiant to the End: When Hades offers to spare her if she becomes her queen after his ascension to Mount Olympus, Aqua responds by pressing the tip of Hades' χ-blade to her collarbone.
  • Foil: To Ringabel. The former is a flamboyant, self-appointed hero with no special powers in contrast to Aqua; a semi-serious warrior raised by ancient tradition to protect the worlds. Ringabel's antics bring some much-needed levity into Aqua's life.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Bakes cookies for the Grandship refugees in the Side Story A Heartfelt Holiday.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During the battle with Hades, Aqua offers to hold back the Titans to allow the others to escape.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames herself for the worlds falling to darkness in her absence. She's very forgiving towards Riku for his decision to leave the Door to Darkness open, as she feels she should've been there to guide the boy and share his struggles.
I couldn't be there when your worlds were in peril. But I should have. Instead, I spent the last decade lost in the Realm of Darkness while your homes were consumed by the Heartless. All because my best friend lost his body to a madman. All because I had hope that he'd break free. All because I… I sacrificed myself, and it wasn't enough. So please, if there's anything I can do to make it up to you… if there's any way I can bring you all hope, just—
    • Aqua also feels immense guilt for pushing Terra away during the events of Birth By Sleep, thereby contributing to his fall from grace.
  • Luminescent Blush: Whenever Ringabel flirts with her. She also covers her face in embarrassment when Zeus mistakes her for Hercules' love interest.
  • The Mentor: Serves as this to Kairi, Xiruk and Riku, teaching a new generation of Keyblade Wielders.
  • Moment of Weakness: Suffers one during Act 3's Castle Oblivion Arc. When Terra/Xemnas guilt-trips her with a manipulative tour of his past memories, Aqua returns the favour by showing him memories of her time in the Realm of Darkness, exposing her trauma in the process. She immediately regrets it when she sees just how shaken Xiruk was from witnessing said trauma.
  • Official Couple: With Ringabel as of Chapter 76 of Act 3.
  • Older Than They Look: Unlike Terra, Aqua hasn't aged a day due to being trapped in the Realm of Darkness for a decade and is physically 19 despite being somewhere in her 30s.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Aqua deeply regrets her words to Terra prior to the climax of Birth By Sleep, especially when she learns what has become of him.
    You'll go astray again...
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Terra/Xemnas in response to the latter's manipulation in Castle Oblivion.
You believed all this time that I had no faith in you. That I doubted you once, so I’d doubt you forever. I loved you, Terra. And I trusted you would win. I gave up everything because I believed in you. That’s why, for all the hell I went through in the Realm of Darkness…nothing hurt me more than the day I learned what you’d become.
  • Save the Villain: Prior to the climax of The Year Between, a wounded Aqua saves Xemnas's life. Justified as she saw a glimmer of Terra within him.
  • True Companions: With Ringabel. Both confide in each other over their shared burdens as well as providing outside perspectives on each other's individual struggles.

    Xion

Xion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xion_2_khd.png
Click here  to see Xion in All That's Left

Appearances: The Year Between|Act 3: All That's Left|Side Stories: Wave of Uncertainty

An imperfect replica created by DiZ from Riku's memories and tasked with hunting down Naminé, though she later abandons that goal due to her friends' influence.

After coming into contact with her original data, Xion gradually begins to transform into a Replica of Riku. Her fears of losing her identity are exploited by Marluxia and Larxene, who befriend her in hopes of exploiting her Keyblade.

  • Absurd Phobia: Played for Laughs. Xion is mortified by Ringabel's Anime Hair.
    KYAAAAAAA! TOO MUCH HAIR!
  • Abusive Parent: DiZ treats Xion as nothing more than a living tool throughout The Year Between. The months of cold discipline and dehumanization take a heavy toll on her psyche.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Rather than being created by the Organization as an imperfect replica of Roxas, Xion was created by DiZ using data from Riku's memories.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: Was created by DiZ instead of the Organization.
  • BFS: Gains the ability to summon Lexaeus' two-handed sword after killing him.
  • Character Development: She starts out with a nearly robotic personality (which makes sense considering she was created from Riku's digitized data) but gradually her understanding of emotions and relationships grows as she meets people to the point where she eventually questions why she has to do everything DiZ tells her to.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Practically melts when she sees a Chirithy in Marluxia's memories.
    K-Kitty... You have a kitty...
    • She also finds Strelitzia and a younger Ventus adorable.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Gains this power after being goaded by Marluxia into killing Lexaeus.
  • The Dog Bites Back: In the climax of The Year Between, Xion and Roxas confront DiZ about her origins. She brandishes her Keyblade and strikes DiZ with an agonizing wail.
  • Grew a Spine: As she gradually becomes more humanlike and understands relationships more, she starts questioning why DiZ treated her like a tool to the point where she attacks her creator when he refers to her as such. She would shortly team up with Marluxia and Larxene, only to realize much later in Act 3 that they were using her as well and she calls them out for it. She reluctantly agrees to stay with them, but only under the condition that they don't deceive her again... and that they get her a hat and sea salt ice cream.
  • In the Hood: Her Black Cloak. She later uses her hood to hide her disfigurement, notably the streaks of silver hair creeping across her head.
  • Loss of Identity: After visiting the Simulation, the corrupted data constituting Xion begins to correct itself, gradually transforming her into a replica of Riku. Hey eyes turn teal, her hair grows silver and she gradually begins adopting Riku's mannerisms and memories.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In addition to being an imperfect Replica of Riku, Xion is technically DiZ's daughter in this continuity.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Lives well past a year in this continuity.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: Due to her Adaptational Backstory Change, Xion has no relation to Sora, and by extension, Roxas, in this continuity.
