We have to trust each other, or we'll die.
The protagonist of this fangan. Lorde is a very optimistic girl who always hopes for the best and has no trouble making new friends!

  • Amateur Sleuth: A staple for the Danganronpa series. Lorde has no background in crime whatsoever, yet she leads the investigations and trials like nobody's business. Somewhat justified by the fact that she is later revealed to have been interested in murder mystery shows.

  • Amnesiac Hero: To an extent. She remembers most of her time at Hope's Peak, but doesn't remember anyone she met.

  • Clear Their Name: A huge point of both trials 1 and 2 were Lorde clearing Joan of suspicion since both times she had been framed.

  • Color Motif: Pink and red.

  • Everyone Can See It: She and Chouya very clearly had a thing for each other, leading to a moment in Chapter 1's trial where everyone very briefly suspects Lorde for writing the note that led Chouya to his death.
Lorde: [surprised sprite] Why is everyone looking at me? We weren't dating!

  • Expy: Of Kaede Akamatsu from Danganronpa V3. Both are female protagonists with hair clips, are optimistic, and are leaders to their classmates for a period of time.

  • Idiot Hair: Word of God states that she hates it, which is why she wears her hair clips.

  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In trial 2, she lashes out at Nao for not cooperating with her when figuring out the culprit, who was him.

  • Pink Heroine: She wears a pink crop top.

  • Shout-Out: Mentions a failed musician's song lyrics (Ibuki Mioda).

  • Word of Gay: Word of God states that she’s bisexual often.

Tsukisae Adachi

Ultimate Tennis Star

I'm looking out for everyone here, got it? Don't try anything gross.

A mean girl who can and will throw insults at you if you even try to say anything rude about her. On the inside, though, she's very sensitive and timid.

  • Abusive Parents: Not her, but her father is heavily implied to be this.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Her and Poruka's relationship is frequently read as romantic.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She vents to Poruka off-screen and they immediately become friends. This also applies, to an extent, with Lorde.

  • Color Motif: Pink.

  • Curtains Match the Window: Her eyes and natural hair color are brown.

  • Cry into Chest: Shortly before her execution, into Poruka's chest.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was physically and emotionally abused by her father her whole life.

  • Dies Wide Open: The last frame of her execution before she gets electrocuted for the last time pictures her eyes going wide.

  • Dye or Die: To an extent. She dyed her hair blonde so she wouldn't be as recognizable to her family when she went to Hope's Peak.

  • Expy: Of Hiyoko Saionji from the second game in the official series. Both are blonde girls with pigtails and a mean streak but are actually Shrinking Violet|s inside, along with their best friend being the group's Mom Friend.

  • Frame-Up: She accidentally frames Joan in trial 1 and even rolls with it.

  • Freak Out: Shortly after being accused of being Chouya's killer.

  • Girlish Pigtails: Paired with two pink bows!

  • Improbable Weapon: She used a pen to kill Chouya.

  • Sympathetic Murder Backstory: She just wanted to escape and run away so she could minimalize the chances of getting found by her father and being put back into her abusive home.

  • Word of Gay: Word of God states that she’s asexual often.

Daidai Hirota

Ultimate Rancher

Maybe you would've known that if you helped me earlier!

The most stubborn gal you ever did see! The supporting character to Lorde, she's sweet as long as you aren't Nao.

  • Berserk Button: It's not recommended to just stand around without helping if you have the option to do so when you're around her.

  • Character Tics: When she's embarrassed, she takes her hat off and covers her face.

  • Color Motif: Orange.

  • Expy: Of Teruteru Hanamura. Both have a Repetitive Name, a last name starting with the letter "H", and are from the countryside.

  • Iconic Item: Her cowboy hat and rope.

  • Implied Love Interest: Played with. She blushes a lot around Lorde and gets unusually happy when Lorde compliments her versus when others do so.

  • It's All My Fault: Blames herself for Chouya and Tsukisae's deaths because she believes if she had checked out the footsteps outside her room, she could've stopped the entire murder.

  • Ship Tease: With Lorde.

  • Shout-Out: One of her free time event dialogues heavily implies she's spoken to Teruteru Hanamura.

  • Surprisingly Normal Backstory: The only thing "out of the ordinary" is that she lived on a ranch.

  • Youthful Freckles: Across her face, arms, shoulders, and legs.

  • The Confidant: She frequently checks on Lorde, especially during investigations.

Poruka Matsushima

Ultimate Tightrope Walker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/06232de4_56c2_464a_8d40_5747710e150d.png
I trust every one of you, and trust goes both ways.

The calmest and arguably sweetest girl in the cast. Most of it is due to her dream profession being a therapist.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Her relationship with Tsukisae is widely viewed as romantic.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unknown if she actually was planning to kill Nao or not since Nao... isn't the most reliable guy in the world. note

  • Color Motif: Purple.

  • Crowd Pleaser: To an extent, as all she wants is for everyone to be happy.

  • Dies Wide Open: Her body discovery shows her eyes wide and in shock.

  • Nice Girl: It's her main personality trait.

  • Team Mom: She is even called this by some students.

  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She is unfortunately the Chapter 2 victim.

  • Word of Gay: Word of God states that she’s canonically asexual.

Joan Takei

Ultimate Violinist

All of you, shut up. You're acting like children.

    Male Participants and Ichidou

Chouya Kimoto

Ultimate Bartender

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7e0c1e1b_30dd_4c33_9bcd_2fab146f55a5.png

We all need to actually work together.

The token sweet boy of the class, despite his Ultimate title. He only wants the best for the group and insists everyone works together.

  • Anime Hair: It's a swirl pattern pinned to the front.

  • Bait-and-Switch: It was widely believed he would be the support character for the story, but he was killed first and replaced with Daidai.

  • Cool Big Bro: Implied to be this by his sister, who is the protagonist of the sequel.

  • Crush Blush: He is noted to blush a lot around Lorde.

  • Dies Wide Open: His body discovery pictures this.

  • Good Is Not Dumb: It's heavily implied he knew he was going to die when responding to the note Tsukisae wrote for him. In Chapter 2, the class found a note he left behind telling them whose handwriting he thought it was, although he was incorrect.

  • Idiot Hair: He has two ahoges standing straight up.

  • Implied Love Interest: A huge chunk of Lorde and Chouya's dialogue is flirting.

  • Improbable Hairstyle: Just look at it.

  • Minor with Fake I.D.: How do you expect he got a job in the bartending business at 15?

  • Nice Guy: Surprisingly. You'd think he'd be tough due to his occupation.

  • Ship Tease: Plenty with Lorde.

  • The Confidant: He acts as this to Lorde in Chapter 1.

  • Younger Than He Looks: He's 6'01 and yet he's 19.

Nao Machi

Ultimate Salesman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9766d6d0_c1d8_4fc4_b272_f004ea84e66b.png

I only give the time of day to people I've known before this.

Nao is certainly... a pain to be around. He's manipulative and downright annoying most of the time.

Daidai: But—
Nao: You should shut up permanently.

  • Exotic Eye Designs: One of his sprites has stars in his eyes.

  • Hypocrite:
    • He praises and demeans Tsukisae for murder in the same breath.
    • He says he doesn't want anybody to die, yet kills Poruka just for fun.

  • Jerkass: He's probably the very definition of this trope.

  • Jerkass Has a Point: Is constantly stating that nobody can really, honestly trust everyone and that blind trust will end in death. Guess what the two victims have in common.

Ichidou Miyahara

Ultimate Doctor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/afde7bd8_aa28_4be7_a70b_f781c36b8dd9.png

...sure.

A quiet and very neutral person who blends into the background.

     The Mastermind

The Conductor, aka Josui Eguchi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/400e6997_4cb7_4db7_a148_7c936b03f200.png
The game is... a killing game!

  • Art Evolution: In Chapter 3, his sprites and his design, partially, were redone completely.

  • Big Bad: A given.

  • Big Brother Is Watching: Heavily implied. How else would he know who the killers were?

  • Evil Is Petty: His motive for the killing game was jealousy of the Ultimate students' happiness. If killing 12 people for that reason alone isn't petty, then I don't know what is.

  • Freudian Excuse: He says he started the killing game because he was jealous of the Ultimate students' happiness.

  • Hanging Judge: Very much so. He even tried to execute Joan for backtalking in the prologue.

  • Insane Troll Logic: He claims he didn't kill anyone illegally, claiming self-defense. This, in hindsight, is a blatant lie as he is heavily implied to be the person who also killed the other half of the class.

  • Killed Offscreen: Implied. The audience never sees a body, just blood.

  • Never My Fault: Claims this in Chapter 3, mostly to "avoid legal trouble." note

  • Nightmare Face: He displays this whenever the mere thought of any class member dying crosses his mind.

  • Purple Is Powerful: His eyes are purple, and he is the most powerful among them so long as he's in his control room.

  • Significant Monogram: His real initials are the same as Junko Enoshima's.

  • The Corrupter: Downplayed, as he never gives a motive other than "kill to leave."

  • The Executioner: Never shown on-screen, but his room shown in Chapter 3 has execution controls.

  • Torture Technician: Electrocuting the tennis player for missing a shot? Suffocating and cutting the salesman to death with coins? Yep and yep, he fits this trope.
