    Hana Mizuno
Hana is a third-year transfer student from Amaririsu and total Main Character. Born in poverty, Hana has been transferred to Asagao out of sheer luck, providence, or both.

Tropes:

  • Amnesiac Hero: After hitting her head on the shower as a child, she lost her memories. Despite most of them coming back, she conveniently forgot her best friend PeanutButterGamer after he moved away.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Her pink hair (which marks her as a protagonist) makes her this. It's responsible for most of her childhood traumas and seems to earn her Shane's ire, and yet it brings her incredible opportunities at Asagao.
  • Decoy Protagonist: While Jacques’ route is about Hana’s unhealthy obsession over the bird Mai is the actual protagonist of the route as she both is the cause of the routes good ending, and becomes the narrator of the bad ending.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Almost said word for word in Jon's route, when he learns that her mother passed away.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After the life she's had, any of the best endings can be described as this.
  • Expy: A short haired, bespectacled girl who transfers to a famous boarding school, one who lived a life of poverty beforehand, and is in constant contact with the resident club full of pretty boys (one of which has serious issues with a family member). The only thing separating her from Haruhi Fujioka is that she's neither a Tomboy or a Wholesome Crossdresser through sheer necessity (on top of the fact that Haruhi was quickly switched to contacts).
  • Flashy Protagonists, Bland Extras: Becomes a plot point - Hana's pink hair so obviously marks her out as protagonist that strange things are just expected to happen around her— and she's ostracized and bullied as a result.
  • Heroic BSoD: She has an outright panic attack during Satch's route when the stress of being abandoned by the Normal Boots Club finally gets to her.
  • Incompatible Orientation: She can fall for Ian, despite Ian being gay.
  • Lethal Chef: While not a notably bad cook, Hana almost kills Shane with a crumpet after she accidentally baked an Itty Bitty Kitty figurine into it.
  • Liquid Courage: In Jared's route. It does not end well. At all.
  • Meaningful Name: Mizuno Hana means "algal bloom," "water bloom," or "lotus flower."
  • Prone to Tears: There's a lot of times where Hana's tendency to be really emotional is brought up, almost to the point of it being Played for Laughs. When it's not, though, something is about to either go very wrong or very right.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The thoughtful, more introverted blue to Mai's rambunctious, extroverted red.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Hana is kind, shy and romantic and her hair marks her as the main character.
  • Sociopathic Hero: In the Jacques route, as well as being the Villain Protagonist. She even gets diagnosed with sociopathy before being taken away according to Mai!
  • Weirdness Magnet: As described by Shane. Her pink "protagonist" hair seems to attract all sorts of unwanted attention.
  • Yandere: In Jacques's route, to the point of reprogramming him to love her and abandon Jon.

    Mai Sasaki
The roommate and best friend to Hana. Mai is a very animated girl, born to rich parents and sent to Asagao since they couldn't watch her all the time.

Tropes:

  • All Women Are Lustful: Mai is incredibly boy crazy, to the point where the wall beside her bed is full of clippings of hot guys.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's blunt, passionate, and headstrong, serving as the perfect contrast to Hana.
  • Genki Girl: Prone to squealing, hugging, and dramatic impressions.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: If you pick Jared's route, Mai withdraws immediately, letting Hana ask him to the Flower Festival. In a slight subversion, Mai is actually more focused on Hana's happiness rather than Jared's.
  • Hidden Depths: She has been diagnosed with Kleptomania, which becomes a plot point for Satch's route.
  • Meta Guy: Mai seems a bit too aware of the fourth wall, and a tad too Genre Savvy; not only does she notice Brutalmoose speaking in Comic Sans, she said Hana looked like the protagonist to her, and bet Hana a metric crap-ton of Yen that she'd get a boyfriend by school year's end. In one route, she even alludes to the developers directly, stating that she doesn't know whether Japan has freedom of speech or not because her "creators" aren't Japanese.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The rambunctious, extroverted red, to Hana's thoughtful, more introverted blue.
  • Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy: She has a massive crush on Jared, and she lands him if you play through PBG's route.
  • Second Love: If you land Jared, she ends up with PBG.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Athletic, strong, and boisterous, but more than a little romance-obsessed.

Normal Boots Club

    Jared
He's a model. The first member of the Normal Boots Club that Hana meets, Jared is a very attractive young man with many talents. Based on ProJared.

Tropes:

    Jon
President of the Drama Club, and one of the co-founders of the Normal Boots Club. He's rarely seen without his robot bird sidekick, Jacques. Based on JonTron.

Tropes:

  • Deadly Prank: While he never goes through with it, he does suggest a few dangerous pranks while Miss Shizuka is out of the classroom— namely finding exploding birds to dive bomb the class and baking a cake full of knives. The last one earns a reasonable response from Shane.
  • Heroic BSoD: Happens twice— once when he loses Jacques at the beginning of his route, and one when his play almost fails because of the new bird he got to replace him. He gets brought out of it both times by Hana.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Jon isn't malicious, he just tends to be tactless.
  • Keet: Tends to be just as energetic and outgoing as Mai.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Pulls these off in a couple of scenes.
  • Robot Buddy: Jacques.
  • Verbal Tic: Echh, as usual.

    PBG
The other co-founder of the Normal Boots Club, and a star player on Asagao's soccer team. Based on PeanutButterGamer.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Pervert: In his route, during the hot springs scene, he accidentally pulls down Hana's towel, causing both of them to pass out in shock.
  • Book Dumb: He seems just as smart as most of his friends, but he's routinely getting bad grades and sleeping in class.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Only in his own route is he able to tell Hana that he's her Forgotten Childhood Friend, and even then he only reveals his long-standing feelings for her in his good and best ends.
  • Forgotten Childhood Friend: He acts as this to Hana, at least until he jogs her memory a bit at the Flower Festival on his route.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: In almost all of the routes outside of his own, PBG shows varying degrees of this towards whoever Hana's chosen over him, from noticeable discomfort to outright declaring revenge against the person, since it's implied that he'll have a crush on Hana regardless of whether or not the player chooses his route. Depending on the route, he either moves on...or tries his best to accept the situation.
  • Nice Guy: One of the sweetest of the Normal Boots guys, fulfilling the 'boy next door' archetype.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: PBG's full name is PeanutButterGamer.

    Shane
Said to know more about video games than anyone else, Shane is quiet and distrustful of Hana and her motives. Based on Did You Know Gaming?

Tropes:

  • Defrosting Ice King: It takes him quite some time to warm up to Hana, especially in his route.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Somehow manages to not notice when his food is either loaded with so much spice that it changes the color of the food, or that he's eating a plastic toy. Despite this, he's the first to notice that Jacques is missing.
  • Non-Action Guy: he is this to his ex-girlfriend, Emily. She was a government agent and because of that he was often kidnapped and Emily had to rescue him. He seemed to have become sort of Unfazed Everyman because of this.
  • Second Love: Emily is his first love and Hana is his second love.
  • The Snark Knight: Seems to have quite the dim outlook on life, and especially on relationships, given his Troubled Past.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: His grumpiness shields emotional issues related to his ex, Emily, who Hana reminds him of.
  • Tsundere: Clearly exists to fulfill this trope. He's even referred to as one in game.
  • That Came Out Wrong: He sometimes speaks without subject, once making Hana think he was going to kiss her and the other time making her think that he did it in his room once.
  • You Remind Me of X: Hana reminds him of his ex-girlfriend, Emily. From their pink hair to strange things happening around them. But later, in his best end, he admits he sees Hana as Hana and he loves her for who she is, and she is nothing like Emily regarding personality and background.

    Jirard
Nicknamed The Completionist by his fellow students, Jirard is an avid collector who is cheerful and kind. Based on The Completionist.

Tropes:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He is infallibly nice, cheerful, and optimistic. Unless you're robbing Hana at knifepoint or you blackmailed her with a fake Princess Pumpernickel figure to make her leave the tournament. For the record, that second scenario is the only time on Jirard's best route that you see his angry sprite, and you will feel very glad that it isn't you he's angry at.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When asking Hana to the convention in his route, Shane gets visibly more agitated as the conversation goes on—which Jirard thinks is because he's messing up while drawing.
    Shane: "Oh my god! Really?"
Jirard: "Did you drop an ink blot again? Man, today is not your day!"
    Shane: "No, it really isn't."
  • Gotta Catch Them All: Jirard is determined to complete his Itty Bitty Kitty collection, and by the start of the game has all but the ultra rare Princess Pumpernickle.
  • Nice Guy: Is repeatedly noted to be this, and it shows through his unending dedication to making his friends happy.
  • Proud to Be a Geek: He's very proud of his Itty Bitty Kitty collection, even though there are some students who ridicule him for it.

    Satch
The librarian's assistant and inventor in his spare time, he's known for being very smart. Based on Satchbag.

Tropes:

  • Gadgeteer Genius: He's a prodigy with technology, which is what got him a scholarship to Asagao in the first place. He participates in the invention and game design category for the tournament, for which he builds a VR headset.
  • Nice Guy: His presence is described like, "being wrapped up in a warm blanket".
  • The Smart Guy: He gets excellent grades, and even spends a scene tutoring Hana in his route.

    Continue
Paul, Nick, and Josh. They write in the school newspaper and help Paul with his student council presidency. Based on Continue?.

Tropes:

  • Disguised in Drag: Played with. Josh may be wearing women's clothing as Joshualina, but Paul says that the wig makes him truly and honestly believe he's a girl.
  • Freudian Trio: In one of their choices, you'll see that Nick is the Id (wants to win people's hearts), Josh is the Superego (wants to play defensively), and Paul is the Ego (wants to talk platforms).
  • Graceful Loser: Nick and Josh are this in Continue's Best End, bordering on Shipper on Deck for Paul and Hana.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Sometimes Paul ends up being this to Hana, which results in conflicts. But later he admits his wrong behavior and apologizes and promises to change his behavior.
  • Love Dodecahedron: In Paul's route, Josh and Nick have a crush on Hana while Hana as a crush on Paul. It's revealed in the one of good endings that Paul had developed feelings for Hana over the course of the route, but suppressed the urge to act upon them because he knew about Nick and Josh's feelings for Hana.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Paul for the majority of the Continue? route does this, creating all the confusion you'd expect.
  • Mirrored Confrontation Shot: Between Nick and Josh after tying in the bid to win a date with Hana at the charity auction.
  • Student Council President: Paul is the current student council president, and naturally, his route deals with his re-election against Jeff, who has decided to run against Paul.
  • Those Two Guys: Nick and Josh are this, taking a backseat to Paul in the Continue route. Their interactions with each other are generally more prominent than their individual interactions with Paul or Hana.

Hidden Block Club

    Ian
Ian is sarcastic, and speaks in Comic Sans, which freaks Mai out. He's a bit of loner. Based on Brutalmoose.

Tropes:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: A platonic and rather depressing example with Caddy. After Caddy's expulsion in Paul's worst end, he shows up to the tournament despite the rest of Hidden Block not attending just to call Hana out on it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Easily his most outstanding trait. He's constantly making dry, witty remarks.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Hana can attempt to romance him, but he quickly lets her know he's gay.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Ian's nice to Hana in practically every route, save for some friendly smack talk here or there. He sticks by her to the point Hana notes in Jon's Bad End that despite having fallen out with Normal Boots, she still has Ian's friendship. The one time he isn't on her side? Paul's worst end, where he openly states his hatred of Hana for having gotten Caddy expelled and ruined Hidden Block's reputation during the tournament, and is the only member of Hidden Block to compete just to go up against Hana, as in vain as it may be.
  • Stealth Pun: His "route" is known as the Hidden Chapter, as in Hidden Block's Chapter.
  • The Rival: To Hana, being her competitor in the puzzle games category. And to Caddy, just in general.
  • Tsundere: According to Hana, though Defrosting Ice King might be a bit more accurate.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Caddy in spades. By all looks, they appear to hate each other's guts, but the other Hidden Block members claim they love each other deep down.
  • Worthy Opponent: Hopes Hana will prove to be this to him in the tournament and sees her as this should he manage to beat him.

    Jeff
He plays on the soccer team with PBG, and seems to have a good friendship with him. Based on Space Hamster.

Tropes:

  • Hidden Depths: Admits in Paul's route if questioned about it that he's running for Student Council both to pad out his college application and to try and improve the school.
  • Malicious Slander: Played for laughs, to an extent. In Paul's route, part of his campaign involves claiming Paul to be the bastard son of a tanuki.
  • Nice Guy: Generally seems to be the friendliest of the Hidden Block guys. Subverted in Paul's route, where he starts a smear campaign against him in an attempt to get the upper hand in the school election.

    Luke
A rapper who is mostly friendly towards Hana. Based on Yungtown.

Tropes:

  • Friendly Rivalry: Has this with Normal Boots in general, stating that they support each other and are somewhat friends despite being tournament rivals.
  • The Gadfly: Has shades of this with his love for pushing his friends' buttons.
  • The Match Maker: In PBG's route, he sends secret admirer notes to Hana to try to get PBG to make a move on her.
  • Yandere: Anonymously pretends to be one of these in PBG's route to push him and Hana closer together.

    Jimmy
A first year at Asagao, Jimmy Whetzel is very knowledgeable about Nokemon. Based on, well, Jimmy Whetzel, formerly known as NintendoFanFTW.

Tropes:

  • Deadpan Snarker: Less so than Ian, but still makes enough comments to land himself in this territory.
  • Secret Legacy: In Paul's route, Paul tells Hana that even though Jimmy denies it, Jimmy is related to the founder of pretzel shop which must be a chain store as Paul described it as "a pretzel empire." Paul found it out because his family knows the CEO, but Paul guessed that Jimmy's parents probably want Jimmy to grow up as a normal kid wanting him to pursue his own interests without the pressure of being the heir of a pretzel empire. This will probably lead to Unexpected Inheritance later on Jimmy's life.

    Caddy
A transfer student from Britain, Caddy is loud and fun— but he has a habit of being clumsy. Based on Caddicarus.

Tropes:

  • Friendly Rivalry: To Ian, but he repeatedly denies the friendly part.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Caddy is short for Caddicarus. His first name is James, but the only people who call him James are Shane and Ian. Much to his displeasure.

    Wallid
A boisterous and friendly young man, Wallid tends to take the rivalry between Hidden Block and Normal Boots the most seriously. Based on BalrogTheMaster

Tropes:

  • Fakin' MacGuffin: In Jirard's route, he attempts to blackmail Hana into quitting the tournament with a Princess Pumpernickel figurine. This gets undermined when Jirard notes the one he gave Hana was brown rather than purple.
  • Magical Girl: Is implied to be one by the costume Hana finds in his locker in Satch's route and his conversation with Nurse McPasta, as well as his transformation into one in the Hidden Block route.
    • Mentioned also in PBG’s route where he calls in to PB&J to announce this but is cut off by the connection. The only clue it’s him is the brief laughter clip and playing other routes.
  • Nice Guy: Played with. He's noted to be a genuinely nice person by Hana and goes out of his way to befriend the widely feared Nurse McPasta, but considering he also attempts to bribe Hana into dropping out of the tournament in Jirard's route and trick her into telling her more about Jared's training for the tournament in Jared's route, he can hardly be considered a straightforward example.

Other Characters

    Jacques
Jon's robot bird and closest friend.

Tropes:

  • Brainwashed: Basically becomes this when Hana reprograms him.

    Miss Shizuka
Hana's class' teacher, whose romantic troubles tend to spill into her working life.

Tropes:

    Mimi Santos
One of the girls in Hana's dorm, she's not very friendly to her or Mai. Like everyone else in the school, she worships the Normal Boots Club.

Tropes:

    Kakusu
Mimi's friend, who speaks oddly.

Tropes:

    Mr. McPasta
The school nurse, whom many regard as a bit odd. He has a tendency to mysteriously appear or disappear when no one's looking. Based on CreepsMcPasta.

Tropes:

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his odd appearance and personality, Creeps takes his job as the nurse seriously and shows competence when the situation calls for it. For example, in Jared's route, he was able to discern that Hana was intoxicated during the fashion show after realizing she wouldn't speak because he would smell the alcohol on her breath if she did.
