While I can see why some people would think this is an example for Arhra, I am unsure if this zero context example is legitimate as he doesn't seem to fit with the guidelines on the trope page but I cannot find enough info on him to be sure either way. Anyone have any idea?

I don't think it's a good enough fit.

  • Barbarian Tribe: While they're still elegant, refined and highly civilized by human standards, the people of the Saim-Hann Craftworld are seen as this by the other Asuryani. They live in a loose collection of clans divided along family lines and ruled by chieftains, are known as fierce and wild fighters, and practice a number of traditions (such as painting their faces with blood before battle) seen as fairly barbaric by other Craftworld.

While I do not believe the above example is an example of the listed trope (people thinking others are barbarians =/= Barbarian Tribe, especially considering the Exodites) but I think there could be a trope here, possibly Soldier vs. Warrior with some rewriting, but I am not sure.

Another trope I am unsure of for Phoenix Lords:

  • Living Legend: The Phoenix Lords are the most famous heroes of the Aeldari, having fought in defence of their race for millennia. Their fame has even spread to some of the races of the galaxy with the records and mythology of these races speaking of their continuing war against the forces of Chaos.

The question is, do pseudo-immortal Energy Beings count for the Living part of the trope? As the trope is about a character becoming famous in their own lifetime, wouldn't immortals be People Sitting On Chais?

I removed the following from the Energy Being entry of the Phoenix Lord section as it specifically refers to events in the Path of the Eldar series so should really be there:

In Path of the Warrior, when Morlianith-Korlandirl looks at Karandras' corpse, he sees no blood or organs, despite a cut down the center of his armour. When Karandras is resurrected after Morlianith-Korlandirl merges with him, the armour just seals up.

I am unsure, however, what the best trope to list it under with a little rewrite. I will post it in trope finder but thought I should mention it here as well.

The following was added to the Howling Banshee entry:

I the last Screaming Warrior example from their entry because the trope description itself explicitly states that when the screaming is used as an attack, it is Make Me Wanna Shout, not Screaming Warrior. It also isn't an Exploited Trope as that is for when "a character knows a trope is going to happen, or is happening already, but rather than trying to deny, change, or even hasten the trope, this character instead decides to take advantage of it." which doesn't fit here.

I would just remove it but as I have removed a similar entry already I wanted some concusses so that it wouldn't be an edit war.

Should I delete it then? I did PM Fearless Son about it (and say that it was being discussed here) but they haven't replied despite editing the page since.

I'd give it another day or two, and then remove it if you don't get a response.

Another example I am unsure of:

  • A Wizard Did It: If the Craftworlders do anything which seems, either overtly or on reflection, to be perhaps against their own interests or just an inefficient way of securing those interests, then it is because a Farseer determined through precognition that was the best way to secure their future. They need not explain the complexity of their visions or their gambits to you.

Now, as I understand it, this trope is specifically an excuse used to explain "any kind of handwave; it happened because the author wanted it to, end of story." which I am unsure is the case here, and if it is an example of the trope then it could be too general.

Any thoughts?

From an in-universe perspective it makes some sense, but it's really not how the trope is supposed to be used. The 40K example on the trope page might be a good place to start for a revision.

SebastianGray Since: Apr, 2011

Yeah, thinking about it, as this is more of an out-of-universe trope than an in-universe one, rewriting the example on the trope page to remove the improper indentation and misuse then putting it on the main page would probably be better than having it on the character page. I'll see what I can come up with.

Another trope I am unsure of:

  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Howling Banshees aside, the Eldar also use Vibro Cannons as artillery, which in previous rulesets were one of the few weapons capable of hitting multiple targets with the same attack.

Beside the fact that it doesn't explain how V Cannons use voice/sound as a weapon I am unsure if it counts as Make Me Wanna Shout as it is more the vibrations (hence the name) than the sound itself that causes the damage and some lore doesn't even mention sound/sonic effects (the 2nd Edition Codex says it uses resonant force).

I think Make Some Noise might be more appropriate for the Vibro Cannons.

How about this?

  • Make Some Noise: The sonic weaponry fielded by the Asuryani, such as the Vibro Cannon artillery pieces and the sonic lances fitted to some super-heavy war machines, use resonant sonic waves to shatter tanks and pulp the internal organs of living targets.

Another uncertain trope usage:

  • Becoming the Mask: Every Craftworlder chooses a particular Path, adopting a vocation and mentality to go along with it. After they feel that they have learned all they can from that Path, they choose a new one, changing vocation and assuming a new mentality. In this way, not only do they learn about particular trades, but also teach themselves various traits to develop their character and establish control over their own passions. However, occasionally an Eldar may become "lost" along a particular Path, no longer able or necessarily willing to adopt a new one, becoming locked into that Path for the remainder of their lives.
    • In the case of those on the Path of the Warrior, these Eldar become Exarchs, who will have their souls absorbed into the spirit stones of the Exarch Armor rather than their own, so that their knowledge and guidance can pass onto a new generation, literally becoming the mask.
    • In the case of Seers, they become Farseers, their dabbling into seeing the future eventually locking them into a Path in which they can do nothing else but continue. Their bodies gradually crystallize as a result of channeling the threads of fate, and they will eventually settle in the Dome of Crystal Seers, becoming a crystal statue that forms a new node in the infinity circuit.

I don't believe this is an actual example of Becoming the Mask as, from reading the trope page, that appears to be specifically about Moles infiltrating the other side. This seems to be more like a Downplayed Split-Personality Takeover, an Exaggerated Lost in Character, some combination of the two, or something else entirely.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I am unsure if this is really an example:

  • Badass Normal: Eldar Guardians when compared to the rest of the army. Unlike the Aspect Warriors, Guardians are a civilian militia used to supplement and support the professional forces as infantry, weapon crews or vehicle pilots. Despite this, their inherent abilities and advanced equipment make them superior soldiers to Imperial Guardsmen.

I feel that the inherant abilities of an Aeldari is pushing the definition of Normal a bit, some lore states that the first citizens to be called up are those that are former Aspect warriors themselves.

I've been wondering if there's reason to separate out tropes for specific groups of Craftworlders like we have for the Marines. How does doing this for aspect warriors seem? I feel like the major groups have enough material to warrant self-standing sections, but I'd prefer to get a second or third opinion here. I could put what I've got so far in a sandbox page for review, if it'd help.

If we can get enough tropes to create the separate sections, I'd say go for it.

I had thought about that myself but never got around to it (too little time and concentration). I would suggest doing a sandbox first as a trial however (I am not happy with how the ork page looks after its split but again haven't got around to doing something about it).

All right, I've set up a draft in my sandbox — I'd link it, but the link doesn't seem to work for reason that escape me. The trope spread is a bit uneven — some groups definitely have enough tropes, some have just three or even just the one.

It's the only thing in my sandbox currently, so feel free to edit if you want.

That's a really good start, nicely done. The link to your sandbox doesn't work because of the formatting bug that messes with slashes and thus breaks UR Ls.

That is a good start but it needs a description of Aspect warriors as a whole. Also, what to do about the Phoenix Lords, keep them in the characters folder or put them in this folder?

(and yes that bug is annoying)

I've added a general description at the beginning.

As for the Phoenix Lords, that's a good question. If I recall correctly, the pre-split Space Marine page listed special characters in their chapters' folders, but as of now we keep them separate, so there's technically precedent for both. Keeping the Phoenix Lords grouped with their shrines might make it easier to add in other characters should we decide to do so, but I'm not certain if I like splitting the page's entries for individual characters into two different places.

Looks good, although a few minor things: the term Aspect Warriors is always capitalised in current publications, the proper term for the Aeldari military is warhost and there are a number of craftworlds where they do make up the majority of warhosts (Biel-Tan most famously)

Nothing immediately stands out to me except that the Swooping Hawk pic is an Exarch whereas the other pics use regular Aspect Warriors. You thinking about putting it between the two existing folders?

The sizes of the pics could probably use equalising but that is a minor issue (I've seen worse on other Character pages in the past). Otherwise it looks good to me.
