Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Sent a customized notifier warning them of the noticed issues, and asking them to come here to discuss.
... seriously? This is a collection of short stories from the early-90s popular over here in South-East Asia, but have mostly faded into obscurity by today, I'm not even sure if anyone is even going to find out about that page.
Don't refer to me as "they"; I'm just a single person, just me.
So what would you guys like to discuss about? Where's the offending ZCE?
Like I told you on PM, a lot of your edits don't come with any more context beyond character names or short little snippets; you need to explain how the trope applies to the work, not just state that it does. I even linked you to Zero-Context Example, which explains in greater detail.
Here are some examples, just a smattering of the ZCEs I've noticed:
- Accidental Misnaming: Caitlyn, all the time. Even as an adult.
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: This is why teenage Jess is such a Chick Magnet.
- Alpha Bitch: Mandy Jenkins. Sonia Tyler is closer to being the Beta Bitch.
- Break the Cutie: More like Wreck the cutie. See below.
- The Cheerleader: Mandy.
- Chick Magnet: Jess has become this as a teenager.
- Childhood Friend Romance: Jess and Leslie, obviously. Also Maybelle and Dylan.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Sonia Tyler, Jess' ex-girlfriend.
- Coming of Age Story: Our main characters aren't kids anymore...
- Cool Big Sis: Leslie is this to Maybelle, Dylan and Joyce Ann.
- All Just a Dream: Inverted in the last few moments Message In A Bottle.
- Bittersweet Ending: A reoccurring theme for some of the less scary or depressing stories.
- Black Comedy: In spades! Damien Sin's writing oozes with this trope.
- Dirty Cop: John Law in Once Upon A Swine.
- Flaying Alive: The fate of Emma in Skin Deep. Oh god, poor Emma...
- Prison Rape: Dangerously close to happening in Jailbird. No thanks to the homosexual warden.
- Spooky Painting: Featured throughout The Artist Arcane Tao.
BTW, I say "they" because it's easier than assuming gender; you go by Robert but I still like to play it safe.
Classic Singapore Horror Stories is definitely an improvement, but it's still got a lot of issues, like the indentation issues mentioned above.
Edited by WarJay77 Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessAlright, I get what you meant after checking the ZCE page; I don't trope for a living, in case you're wondering I'm a Ridiculously Average Guy from Malaysia who works as an office drone (graphic design and advertising), who occasionally drops stuff on websites like Tvtropes when I have free time.
I'm currently a bit more active than usual because I'm working freelance ATM (left my previous job, screw that company). I understand for you guys, tropes are a Serious Business, but... I have bigger issues in life right now. Like, a job interview tomorrow?
I may or may not get back to fixing those ZCE entries, but no promises
I can guarantee you that none of us trope for a living.
If you cannot fix the ZCE's, we'll just be commenting them out (i.e. hiding them).
Yes, you may. Much appreciated if you do, saves us both the time and effort.
Maybe if I have the free time I'll fix them before un-commenting them out. (again, no promises)
Hey, I'm just glad you understand the issue. I may go and comment them out tonight or tomorrow, and if you're ever able to go back in and expand on them, that'd be great- but don't worry too much about it, I just wanted to get this whole thing resolved and didn't feel right just going through and editing it all while you were still working on it.

Edited by RobertTYL^ What are you referring to, Nombre's PM...?
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessNevermind...
Also, how much details do you need on a trope that's literally called Prison Rape? Isn't that Exactly What It Says on the Tin???
For context: In the above story the main character is a first-day prisoner undergoing inspection, where the warden in charge asks if he needs a "plastic bag". The other prisoners around him shake their heads, hinting at the main character to refuse; it turns out later that the warden is gay and "plastic bag" is a slang for condom.
How the hell do you even describe that in sentence form??
^ You could put exactly what you wrote there, actually.
Even if something is Exactly What It Says on the Tin, context is helpful because readers aren't looking just to see what tropes are in a work, but how those tropes get used in a work.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness
RobertTYL has a habit of improper indentation and ZCEs, among other problems. I first discovered their bad habits when I looked over Bridge to Terabithia 2: The Last Time, a page started and heavily edited by them- a cursory glance shows a lot of context problems, and while there are a lot of properly indented examples, there are others that aren't so properly intended.
I sent a notifier and they did in fact respond...but despite editing heavily, they've never actually gone back and fixed anything; instead they've just continued to edit 'Classic Singapore Horror Stories instead, which has a lot of similar errors. So while they've acknowledged my attempt to reach out to them, they didn't actually pay attention to what I was saying and have continued to make a lot of edits with similar issues.
I've also noticed some issues with What Goes Where on the Wiki; here they posted an In-Universe example on the YMMV page, and they've also posted a Moral Event Horizon wick on the main page.
