Find a Trope:
openLooking through waste for a living
The following example was originally under Dumpster Dive but the Is This An Example? thread said it was misuse. Is there any trope it could fit under?
- The background material for House Cawdor states that they make their living by recycling the industrial waste, rubbish and detritus of the other Houses, the impoverished Cawdor citizens searching through the colossal waste piles of hive in search of anything useful. Although they are all doomed to a lifetime of sifting through trash, the citizens of House Cawdor nonetheless take great pride in their labours, taught as they are that by their suffering they are blessed.
openNiche Maintenance Man
I'm looking for a trope to describe an eccentric, maintenance man who is called for a specific and niche job, i.e. repairing or tuning up something that you normally wouldn't need to. He's not a handyman or Mr. Fixit, as he's an expert in only one, very specific job, but his expertise is enough that his results are unbelievable, almost mystical. This kind of character usually also carries a case with very specific tools, organized in a very specific way. example:
https://youtu.be/6FDZRWeNyWc?t=300
timestamp 5:03-6:30
openCause and punishment
So this guy declares "whoever sets me one fire (literally) has to treat me dinner."
Is this Disproportionate Retribution? Slap on the wrist?? I have no idea how to judge this???
Edited by Lermisopenwhen two people got their own community..
2 people got their own community—i think here analogy used is a game , then third person joins & group is split a bit , person 4 joins & a og leaves for good .. person 5 would b THE GIRL who ofc ruins everything until eventually group is person 3 5 6 7 8 9
openSpear Counterpart for Stay in the Kitchen
Is there a Spear Counterpart for Stay in the Kitchen? If there isn't, can someone give some examples where a character insists that men should stay on the battlefield (literally or figuratively)?
Edited by IukaSylvieopenDropped Premise
As a show goes on, begins to forget about it's premise. For instance, a Sci-Fi show drops the fantastical subplots in favor of Slice of Life antics. A Police Procedural might focus on the lives of the police instead of catching criminals.
openPerson mispronounces a word so long they still say it wrong most of the time
This is the case with me for numerous words. Would Damn You, Muscle Memory! cover this?
openIt's a cartoon, I watched it on Netflix. It's gone.
Cartoon where they're all monsters. one is a girl with red hair, white skin, and a black cat. one is a skeleton boy, who likes to paint. a two headed monster that plays guitar, and a one eyed girl that does stunts. They went around solving problems sometimes. I think the red haired girl was named Ruby. In one episode, they though Ruby was gonna die. The intro was Ruby riding a bike, the kind with a big wheel at the front.
openAlternate Universe Dialect
Kind of like Animal Accent? It's kind of hard to describe, but it's where characters that aren't human will have certain words that are different from normal English, like "anypony" instead of anybody in My Little Pony, or "cubs" instead of "kids" in The Berenstain Bears, or how Doc Hudson is a "Doctor of Internal Combustion". Is there a trope for this?
openOdd Name
When a character's name isn't spelled how you would expect, like Peeesh from UK Sight Reading Tournament.
openParody Personality Opposite Webcomic
Is there a trope about parodies of characters having the opposite personality of the originals? A Sherlock Holmes parody is stupid, a Superman parody is evil, Queen Elizabeth is laid back, Robin Hood is greedy, Hercules is weak, and so on...
openMarried Into Higher Class
Is there a trope when man from lower or middle class is married with higher society girl? Like Tom in Succesion or Blair in Black Monday
openLotus Eater Interrogation
Someone gets put in a Lotus-Eater Machine or similar simulated reality so that their captor can disguise themselves as someone the captive trusts and manipulate them captive into revealing information they want.
openFound the Vibrator
This is sort of a female version of Porn Stash, where someone stumbles onto a female character's... intimate toys. Or at least, they find something implied to be one. One example that comes to mind is the infamous "finding Birdo's vibrator" bit in Captain Rainbow. Or does this fall under Porn Stash?
openCharacter is dead but dosen’t want to be brought back
In a world where Death Is Cheap, there’s a way to bring someone back, but then before they could revive them, they receive a message from that dead person that they want to stay dead.
openFilming the drama
What is the trope for when drama, and maybe a fight, ensues and a lot of characters get involved, except for one who stands aside and films the action with their phone? A little bit like Pass the Popcorn, but with filming instead of eating.
openSteal From Alternate Self
What's the trope for this situation: Alice has lost her husband Bob. She goes to a parallel universe that's exactly the same (or sufficiently Like Reality, Unless Noted to not matter) where Bob isn't dead to continue living with him... the problem being that universe's Alice, who objects to sharing Bob even with an exact copy of herself (Bob's opinion, naturally, runs towards "Hey! Two of them!").
openNot Worth My Time
- This character is known for operating on this mindset, especially when it comes to people whose goal to start a war and/or rivalry with him. Also this character has the wealth and influence, so he can afford to engage in with the would-be instigator as long as he wants but decides not to give them the time of the day and go about their business.
openOverly-Wide Mouth
A humanoid character's mouth is much wider than normal, often showing all their teeth and then some when open (usually played for horror). Basically the same effect as a Glasgow Grin, but instead of a scar or stitch giving the impression of an overly-large mouth, their mouth really does open that wide. Usually seen on robotic or artificial characters.
For example:
- The Killer Doll in this comic.
- Justice League had a scene where a pair of fembots deploy sleeping gas by rotating their skulls back, giving them a mouth reaching around to their ears.
This was under Ship Sinking in Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter. It obviously does not fit that, but it sounds like it does fit something, though I have no idea what.
