The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openWide-angle shot of a group sillouetted standing on a ridge
Feels like this is very common in fantasy series. Do we have it?
openGuns Are Worth All
The aesop being that a gun can kill anything, no matter who it may be such as an Eldritch Abomination or a Flying Brick.
Edited by KingOfStickersopenGame is so unfair the winner quits Videogame
Is there a trope for when a game is so blatantly unfair that even the person who's winning gets bothered by this and just quits?
openNo Sexualdimorphism
Is there a trope for a species with a sexualdimorphism which is so hardly visible or recognizable in other ways that it is almost or completely impossible to identify the gender of their individuals?
openReverse 4th Wall Gag
Something looking like a trope is in-universe instead. For example, in "Haunt Squad" a Scare Chord plays each time the Odd Squad customer tries to open his closet. And thus he is too scared to open it. Clearly this is a typical 4th wall mix of viewer and protagonist standpoint, only it isn't - when Olympia rips open the door, it reveals a dame playing the double bass, i.e. there was never a 4th wall mix. When Leslie Nielsen exclaims "Bingo!" in Naked Gun, the viewer expecting him having found a clue - but he found a Bingo card - it is the same trope. It was filed under Literal-Minded, which is not applicable here. So, what IS it? (Works of course only when the viewer immediately recognizes the intended trope.)
openA sad character grows mushrooms on their head Anime
Sometimes in Anime a sad or depressed character will not only spot a gloomy look on their face, but they will also spot some mushrooms on their head.
It's mostly in Anime and Visual Novels where I have seen this.
openToken Non-Singer
Do we have a trope where only one character does not sing in a musical or Musical Episode (either for the whole show or up until a certain point), usually for some symbolic purpose?
openPsychometry
Is there a trope relating to psychometry? A psychic who gains visions by touching objects?
openDeath Equals Implosion
When a character dies or is dying, they physically collapse and, well, start imploding(or partially do so). For example Ego (after his brain is destroyed the planet starts falling apart and as Peter escapes the planet we see it collapse in on itself), The Witch-King (movie anyway, there's a weird visual effect after he gets stabbed where his helmet collapses), certain stars (while large enough stars have a supernova, their core collapses into an ultra-dense neutron star or even goes beyond that and becomes a black hole)
openWhy...? Oh, Never Mind
Someone has a question that they withdraw when it is immediately answered. E.G. in Hunt for the Wilderpeople:
- Ricky: Why does he call himself Psycho Sam?Sam: [Explains that wearing pots on your head prevents the government from tracking you]Ricky: Never mind.
openPet only likes owner?
Like, there's a pet who acts all grumpy around most people, but they're a total sweetie among their owner.
openLonger finale
The finale of a season or an entire series is longer than a regular episode of the series.
openComparatively Modest Swimwear
Do we have a trope for instances where a character with a Stripperiffic normal outfit wears something that covers more skin when they go swimming? Like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann features a scene where several of the men get disappointed that Yoko's dedicated swimwear isn't nearly as revealing as the bikini she wears everywhere else, and Fate/Grand Order's Assassin version of Ushiwakamaru was her swimsuit include a top compared to how her usual outfit from her Rider variant completely lacks a shirt with her shoulder armor covering what needs to be covered.
openThe meta-page on overchance meaningless tropes
I swear we have a term for "trope that seems to be PSOC, but it occurs far too often in media to be random chance" but I can't find it.
openHeroic Truth Denial
What's the trope for this: The villain is gloatingly explaining his plan to the captured heroes, but one of the heroes isn't having it, explaining (to the villain) that he's too stupid to have come up with one and he's obviously just an Unwitting Pawn for some smarter, more capable villain (despite all the evidence to the contrary, which the hero continuously denies as fabrications).
openNo Title
Hair Decorations is no longer a trope, but this example (from Recap.Ookamikakushi S 1 E 4 Premonition) might be another trope:
- Hair Decorations: Kanako wore a four-leafed clover-shaped hair decal, which is the only trace of her left after she's cut down.
openMind healing
Do we have a trope for someone who uses magic to heal another person's mind from trauma, mental problems, etc.? Basically an inversion to Mind Rape.
openWhat kind of circus music? Live Action TV
I have a TLP called Happy Circus Music that I think is just about ready to launch, but I need help with one thing.
Someone recently suggested an example from The Good Place, and I think it might actually be some form of Creepy Circus Music, but I can't tell from the context.
Someone, usual a supporting/secondary character, has finally finishing building their dream project, which has taken them a very long time, possibly even years…and then it's immediately destroyed by some tragic accident.
