It makes people lose their way (and get attracted to the song). And then she eats them. Classic siren trap. Perfect Momento describes them as being confused, but apparently someone else can easily bring you back to reality, so I guess it's more like distracted.
Sexy bartender Mystia! Rrrrrrawr! ... The actual doujin is a little awkward and depressing, though.
There're two images in that link, and the first one is just about one of the most elegantly sexy drawings of a Touhou character I ever saw. It's what comes to mind for me whenever it's about adult!Mystia.
The other mental image that would come to mind for her is the one used in this video:
This one works well for her somewhat creepy and dangerous but also beautiful nature as a night sparrow, dontcha think? If you guys can agree to these, then all we'd need is a good depiction of her childly appearance...
I also find it interesting that you of all people would think she sings horribly, what with how you love her for her theme song.
That's funny, I don't remember saying out loud that I loved her themesong (though I do love every single version I've ever heard, bar none). I more like her because she's one of the few low-stage bosses who ever demonstrates a lick of intelligence or cleverness (at least in cannon).
Your funny quote here! (Maybe)I like to think of Mystia as being more cunning but less smart than Cirno (she cannot read fine print!). She's the sort who can make a great plan, but fail hard in the execution.
I also like the idea that she's easily intimidated, especially by Yuyuko:
After that fanvid, I have a mental picture of a meganekko Yuyuko forcing Mystia into that Don't Say Lazy dress.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!@Brickman: Hmmm. I do think I remember you saying something along the lines of that you like characters based on their theme songs, and that you loved hers especially much... It was way back around the time of Cirno Day when people were suggesting songs left and right.
Yeah, probably. She does have a kickass song, especially the dBu version. But this topic is not (directly) about music, so let's get back on topic.
Your funny quote here! (Maybe)^ Completely out of left field and hard to picture. For me anyway.
Well... yes.
Furthermore, cute Yuugi/Parsee doujin! I can get behind this pairing now.
Hmm, before the next discussion, I really want some more stuff on Kogasa! She's such a popular character, that turn-out was rather disappointing!
Also, if people are gonna agree to my picture choices by way of not agreeing, I still need a defining picture of Mystia's child form!
On Kogasa: There was some pretty good fanfiction in on of the Story threads on Pooshlmer that began from a point in time before Highly Responsive to Prayers. In this story, Yumemi actually appeared in the Makai long before the events of Dim. Dream, and she gets implicated in a ploy by the residents of Gensokyo to stop Shinki's expansionist tendencies before she conquered Gensokyo.
Why am I mentioning this? Simple - Kogasa appears as a member of Yuuka's entourage, and she manages to scare Yumemi twice. I like how the second time she does it is with the approval of Chiyuri, and how she loves it when someone can scare/surprise people the way she wishes she could.
I like to imagine Kogasa trying her hardest to surprise the Miko, Wind Priestess, and ordinary Magician constantly. While she can easily "frighten" the human villagers, she wants to surprise these three whom she failed to surprise before.
Also, I have a soft spot for her Fourth Wall breaking power to surprise the player by becoming the Extra Stage midboss!
Her colour scheme and heterochromia make her one of my most favourite girls of Gensokyo.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!WMG: Kogasa is always as strong as she was in the extra stage, day or night. She only pretended to be weak so that she could surprise everyone in the extra stage.
Side note, Kogasa's umbrella is ugly. I don't mean ugly as in character concept-wise (in that sense it's quite cool and pretty), I mean ugly as in there's no way I would ever carry around an eggplant-colored umbrella, especially if the eye and/or the tongue were always there. I can't help but wonder if a coat of paint was all it would've taken Kogasa to find acceptance as an umbrella.
Your funny quote here! (Maybe)I would totally use an eggplant-coloured umbrella, you bet. >_>
And I had the same idea that Ace Of Scarabs spoilered in their post. I think she probably seems slightly insane the the residents of Gensokyo sometimes, but that's only because she knows they're all in a video game.

I don't think she's the only one known to have broken the fourth wall... Not even going into fanon, obviously.
I'd totally use an eggplant-based umbrella. It's so delightfully bizarre.
Hm, I think the main difference in Kogasa's characterization I've seen is whether she's genuinely that cheerful or just trying to hide her horrible loneliness. I prefer the former.
@Faw: Yeah, Team Malice loves to break the Fourth Wall mid-snark.
I prefer a Kogasa who is easily cheered up by the smallest things, even though life can get depressing at times for her.

Marisa Kirisame
talking role in a Cirno story (part 2)
Traits:
- Hot-Blooded Badass Normal Genki Girl
- well-liked despite selfishness => charismatic Manic Pixie Dream Girl
- selfish <=> not quite selfish
- Rough around the edges
- Kleptomaniac Hero
- It's all fun and games when someone gets hurt.
Relationships:
- Reimu (long-time partner, rival, possible lover...)
- Alice (friend, possible rival, possible lover...)
- Patchouli (steals books from, is tolerated, possible lover...)
- Nitori (buddy, or possible lovers...)
- Rinnosuke (friend.)
Write-up:
Marisa is Touhou's poster child for the Crazy Awesome lifestyle. Originally, and still prominently, an "ordinary witch", she's a simple human who has gained obscene power * through hard training and sheer force of will. And the willingness to pull any strings necessary to get more power. While it seems that she does know how to act normally, it seems she refuses to and instead opts to act whatever way seems the most interesting at the moment.
Apart from her passionate love of the Dakka, Marisa is known to be a fun (if possibly exhausting and not necessarily trustworthy) person to have around. All her actions ultimately speak of a desire to have fun, so being on her good side, a good sense of humor should be all one needs to have a fun time. In fact, she appears to be extraordinarily charismatic, to the point where it seems that anyone would end up liking her in the end, and several of the more reserved characters are often shown liking her as more than just a friend~
The biggest room for interpretation for Marisa lies in her relationship towards these characters. Is she in love? Oblivious? Indecisive? Afraid? Passionate?
Whatever may happen, chances are she'll be walking out of it laughing.

I think of Marisa's relationships with Alice/Patchouli/perhaps Nitori as the same as Yuugi and Parsee (or, more accurately, the other way around, but still); her extroverted personality pulls the more introverted characters along and overwhelm them with friendliness and energy (like in Locked Girl). Though she might not always have completely honest motives (like what happened with the Non-Directional Laser), she pulls them along for the ride.

Nitori Kawashiro
Traits:
Relationships/Shipping:
- Marisa (super-buddies! or potential lovers)
- Momiji (worthy opponent in shogi)
Tentative write-up:
The resident crazy scientist genius, there's little more that can be said about Nitori besides her existence as an endless barrel of fun potential. She loves science, she loves machines, she loves the whole world and all its craziness, boom-de-ah-da, boom-de-ah-da. Not only that, she's also curious about humans and wants to find out more about them despite her timidness, though it's a timidness that doesn't seem to stop her from showing off her inventions to anyone in sight. What better friend could she possibly have than Marisa, that fun-loving, open-to-anyone rascal and fellow lover of big explosions?
Maaaaaaaaaan I love Nitori but I have no idea what to write about her. She's just batshit insane fun! It's kinda hard to extrapolate a lot more beyond what's said by "cute hyperactive Mad Scientist". Though admittedly I'm pretty tired by now.
I'm sorry, guys, I've been a pretty terrible host so far. I'll finish up some more stuff soon, yeah?
Meanwhile, anyone know any good stories with Nitori in a more serious role?

Nitori is shy and cute, but she will really open up if you know your technology and/or mechanics. She has a bit of a stalkerish element with her optical camo, and is sometimes found near Sanae (for more info about modern-day tech) and Hina. She wants to visit Kourindou, but is worried about having to face any kind of crowd there.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls! She's a Super Youkai Warhead, whatever that means.
The interpretation I like comes from kind of a throwaway line in Silent Sinner in Blue. "The kappa and tengu of the mountain are just half-heartedly mimicking the outside world." I'm not saying that Nitori isn't honestly enthusiastic about machines, but the cultural reasons behind that strike me as interesting. The kappa and the tengu, unlike most solitary youkai, actually have their own society, and those societies are dying, despite Gensokyo. Thus, they cling to the trappings of a flourishing human world in a sort of Cargo Cult manner. Oblivious to the fact that, being spiritual beings, they'll never properly reclaim anything like this.
Anyway, based on that context I just made up for myself, I see Nitori as excited and curious about science, but fundamentally ignorant of how or why it works. She's more concerned with appearances of machines and mechanics than she is with what we might consider the important details (obviously, those other details would be important as far as she's concerned). And, being a magical creature, sometimes things just work out for her magically.
I have no basis for any of this, it's just an interpretation I made up myself and like.
I prefer the portrayal she got in the The Ring-doujin posted in the Touhou-thread. Energetic, curious and very dedicated to her work. For some reason, my idea of her is the direct opposite of Clarste's (nothing personal). She tries to find other ways of doing awesome things with technology instead of with magic. She'll work tirelessly at finding out what something does and what cool things can be done with it, and then create her own brand of magic from it.

Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!Pretty much that, although the Mad Scientist thing is kind of an interesting angle I never considered before. I see most of the kappas being really wary and shy around outsiders, as they're very elusive and not often seen by anyone other than Kappas. The fact that Nitori has ventured out into the rest of Gensokyo and made friends with Reimu (albeit in Nanoha-style) makes me think she's a little more adventurous and outgoing than the average kappa, though. As for their level of technological development, I think that the kappas are probably more advanced than the outside world, because they combine human technology with magic.

Isn't her singing supposed to drive people crazy or something?
