Rachel is supposed to be unlikable. The entire point of before the storm is to present the toxic, borderline abusive relationship Chloe had with Rachel and to bring that in direct contrast with the therapeutic relationship she found with Max in Li S. Rachel is a liar and a bad influence. We know that because we're the players. We know that because we realise the forest fire Rachel started on a whim has horrible consequences which can be felt and observed directly throughout the rest of the game. We know that because it literally rains ash when she seduced Chloe just to manipulate her into taking her away from Arcadia Bay. We know it because every choice we make in the game that has a positive influence on Rachel has a disastrous effect on Chloe.

We aren't supposed to take the story at face value because this is Chloe's interpretation of events and Chloe is a very unreliable narrator. Chloe has her own version of Rachel in her head much like everybody else in the town. She's her angel. Her saviour. Her wildcard. Someone who she thinks can relate to her. She doesn't realise that her mindgames and her behaviour are a persona put on to appease Chloe just to manipulate her later. She's incapable of sensing Rachel's Pathological Narcissist personality disorder because she doesn't want to admit she has noone to rely on and is being taken advantage of once again.

This is the tragedy of Chloe's character. She is honest to a fault and mistakens positive attention for affection. She is quick to spot superficiality but cannot parse hypocrisy. She can notice some of Rachel's flaws but is quick to look past them as that is what she wants others to do to her and how she perceive Rachel to be treating her. She does not realise Rachel has a persona for everyone. She believes she is just as special to Rachel as Rachel is to her. This is how the manipulative Rachel managed to mentally coerce the vulnerable Chloe into becoming her subservient lackey for no real reason other than her capricious desire to want company.

That's who Rachel is. She surrounds herself with people but fails to connect with any of them. She does not understand why people cling to her. She is quick to suggest "therapy" to Chloe but immediately fails at understanding anything about Chloe's situation or plight, opting for explicit and inappropriate jokes and a fast retreat instead. She bails the moment she realises she can't help Chloe in any easy way and bets on appeasing her with an unfiltered, uncensored and uninhibited persona instead. She is incapable of seeing past people's archetypes but she is very savvy at noticing their weaknesses and relies on exploiting them or pretending to care about them in a conscious effort to make herself popular and the center of attention. She thrives in being better than everyone.

Rachel is the direct contrast to Max. She is everything Max was afraid she was turning into. She is fake but her abilities make her appear as someone you need in your life. She completes you because she "has seen" what you lack and will not hesitate to offer that to you. Once she knows what you want from her and makes you understand how effortlessly she can provide it, she owns you.

Make no mistake, Rachel's affection is conditional. It works on a reward-punishment system. If you want attention first you must appease her and then she may consider rewarding you. If you as much as hesitate to give her what she expects from you she will not hesitate to make you know what the impact of her removal from your life will be. It doesn't matter if you've known her for a month, a week, a day... She is important and you are not. Let her go and "sad Chloe will be fucking sad again". Your struggles were never important. Hers are. Because she is the answer to all your questions and you should depend on her or you're making a mistake.

Chloe is not naive. She's hurt. She knows Rachel is worse than everyone else. She knows it in her heart. She can see it in her dreams. Rachel cannot bring her father back. She can only distract her from the world that took it from her. She can set it on fire. She's beautiful. She is fire. And she couldn't possibly hurt Chloe more than anybody else already has. Or so she thinks. Chloe understands Rachel is "fake and hollow" but cannot stop herself from relying on her. Rachel enjoys Chloe so much because Chloe can see through her as much as she can see through Chloe and still refuses to let herself admit that. She is aware she can hurt her, berate her and cheat on her and Chloe will never admit to knowing the truth unless she is directly confronted by it. If "the bitch" doesn't lie directly to your face then she might as well have not lied at all.

The game has some flaws but Rachel's characterisation has never been one of them. It is, in fact, the strongest aspect of the game and the one the developers treated with the utmost subtlety and respect. Chloe's comments on Rachel and her actions goes directly against what the game shows us. Chloe can see the fire but can't see the ash. She can see the mask but not the person underneath. Her interaction has always been with the character, not the actor in the costume. And she's ok with that. She will consent on stage to be her property and follow her in her schemes. That's the type of person she is. That's what Rachel expects her to be. She wants her to be the bad part in her flawless play. She is aware Chloe at her best can steal the show so she only has to sabotage the competition. And she won't be needing any pills to do that. Not that she would have any issue with using such underhanded tactics, obviously, as she does fall as low and even lower in-game but she will abuse you in other ways. And you'll thank her for it because she's your angel. She's your muse. She's the sister you never had. She's your model. She's your star. Your perfect daughter. Your lioness. She's your friend. Your lover. She's everyone's friend. Everyone's lover. She has never wanted to be anything else. Give her a role. She will perform flawlessly. But don't try to steer the play in any way. If she's your star she will own the performance. She will improvise and you will thank her for it. Her idea of your world is better than yours. She will bring whoever she wants in it. And she will change the lines. And you'll be grateful. You will praise her for it. Or you will regret it.

In conclusion, your analysis of Rachel is shallow. You take the game's themes at face value in the same breath you lambast its lack of depth. I hope you will reconsider at least as much as your opinion on the way Rachel is written.
