Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Onyx seems bad, but I'm not familiar enough with the franchise to know if she's bad enough for it.

[tup] Li Pang

Time for another Samus and Joey candidate. Just so y’all know, I can’t guarantee they’ll all keep. But it’s better to be safe than sorry, and just propose these other three contenders I have in mind.

Who Is He?

Dragüd, the Big Bad of the first volume, is a sadistically infamous space pirate leader.

What has he done?

Dragüd orders the attack of a peaceful village with the intent to kidnap the villagers as slave labor, while also giving his pirates the okay to slaughter anyone who stands in their way, as the planet is now theirs. One of his men even kills a guy for refusing to serve as Dragüd’s slave.

But Dragüd has his own plans. After witnessing his men getting slaughtered by the Metroids in the past, Dragüd felt afraid… but also intrigued by the creatures, totally glossing over the massacre of his own men. After their extinction, Dragüd used a dead Metroid to create his very own, known only as the Megaroid, a creature more powerful than the Metroids. Viewing it as a bioweapon, Dragüd plans to add it to his ranks and cause untold amounts of carnage across the galaxy, with Samus to serve as its first victim. But then the creature escapes captivity. And he didn’t have his mind control chip implanted.

The Megaroid goes on a rampage, with Dragüd supposedly killed alongside his men after it gains an enormous amount of power. With the powered up Megaroid on the loose, it tries to kill all the people in Joey’s village, but is thankfully killed by Joey and Samus before it can do any serious damage.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. Dragüd only values himself, viewing his men dying to the Metroids as just a way to examine their true capabilities. While he gets some comedic moments (like Joey stealing his cherished tiger rug and spear), that doesn’t detract from his villainy.

Heinousness?

Ok. Now let’s discuss the manga’s heinous standard. While Greed sets it high, let’s go through the manga’s other villains.

Some one-off villains don’t make the cut, as often they’re not heinous enough, or they pull Heel-Face Turns.

Then there’s the Dominion, a shadowy cabal of Arms Dealers who start wars and sell weapons to keep them going, having done fucktons of damage across the galaxy. Problem is, they’re mainly a collective Seele-esque group of people who look the same, with the closest we’ll see to a leader being nothing more than a regular cog in a larger scale machine. Only one of them really stands out, and I’ll get to him soon.

And how about the Deadly Six Stars? While three of them are really all that bad (Golon for imprisoning non-circular members of his planet to be made into machines, Chrysta for causing a planet to freeze, and Blast for being a coward willing to blow up a planet for shits and giggles), they’re really given nothing else to do. Greed’s two henchmen Bishop and Knight? Don’t count either. Bishop’s nothing but a Big Bad Wannabe, while Knight is an Anti-Villain who sacrifices himself to save Joey’s life.

But Dragüd? A regular space pirate leader who has a village raided, attempts to enslave its villagers there, and tries to use a super powerful Metroid to help him kill who knows how many lifeforms across the galaxy. He doesn’t have the resources of Greed or the Dominion, but he makes up for it with his sheer sadism and cruelty towards innocents and his own soldiers.

Conclusion

I think he’s a keep.

Yes to Li Pang and Dragud.

I want to talk about Edward Braddock in Assassin's Creed 3. While he defnitely counts, he is listed under Forsaken. Thing is... I am replaying AC 3 and it seems like many of his actions listed are actually in the game itself. Maybe we should move him to game or just list him under Franchise-wide.

I think I'll toss in a yes for Onyx. She seems to stack up nicely with Vertigo and Mathis, if not with Zytle (who was willing to kill 20,000).

So, Bad Blood:

some caption text

Big enough?

EDIT: Or maybe we should just use the second image?

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rco009_w_1467179144.jpg
"But unlike others of its species, [the Bad Blood Predator] is no sport hunter, but a crazed psychotic, a butcher of its own kind, an unhinged killing machine."

EDIT: Yeah, I think the second image works. The skulls in the beginning, the sadistic evil smile of Bad Blood, and a brutal double kill.
