Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yeah, moving through the series, tone with the Duke isn't an issue, he's played deadly seriously, tbh even moreso than the likes of Bill Cipher. There's the....slight issue of cutaway gags showing that the resident Rick-expy accidentally knocks over Big Ben, causes tsunamis and earthquakes, and generally endangers people through sheer apathetic indifference, but ehhhhh I don't think we should necessarily hold cutaway gags against a guy played completely seriously.

Alright, this one has been on my backburner for awhile, so let's discuss a couple candidates from another G.I. Joe crossover comic!

What's the work?

G.I. Joe vs The Transformers is a 4-part comic book series featuring the human military G.I. Joe team and the alien robotic Transformers facing off and teaming up in a variety of situations, pretty standard premise.

First up, from the second part of the comic, simply called G.I. Joe vs The Transformers II, we've got a trademark Transformers baddie.

Who is he?

Shockwave is the current leader of the Decepticons on the Transformers homeworld of Cybertron. A purple, one-eyed, coldly logical sociopath of a bot, Shockwave has assumed dominance of Cybertron in the absence of Megatron and Optimus Prime, and plans to spread that dominance far and wide...

What has he done?

Having taken control of Cybertron and in the process of stamping out any resistance, Shockwave is planning to use the Teletran-3 teleporting device to travel to Earth and launch a full-scale invasion. In a glimpse into a future where Shockwave succeeded that is shown, Shockwave has wiped out massive portions of the human race, waging war on any rebels and enslaving the few survivors into labor camps to slowly strip the Earth of its resources. When slaves run out of usefulness, Shockwave has them rounded up and executed via vaporization.

In the present, Shockwave continues scheming his invasion of Earth...but when a group of G.I. Joe, Cobra, and Transformers interfere with the Teletran, accidentally resulting in damages to the timestream of Earth that will result in the entire planet being bathed in nuclear fire ever 10 years for the next several centuries, ensuring the genocide of humankind. When Shockwave learns of this, he casually remarks that that's just as good as an invasion, as it will quickly leave the planet's resources ripe for the picking, and begins working to prevent the heroes from fixing the timestream.

Orchestrating the murders of several of the heroes, Shockwave brags that when he captures the rest of the Joes and Cobra, he's going to vivisect them to learn about their biology. Luckily, the team up of the Joes, Cobra and Transformers fix the timestream and escape from Shockwave, and Shockwave is killed when Cobra Commander laces Starscream with 40+ pounds of plastic explosives and leaves him as a human bomb to blow up Shockwave's base.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

None to speak of at all, Shockwave's as straightforward "world conquering tyrant" as you can get, who casually threatens his own men in the same breath that he tells them good job.

Heinousness?

Shockwave's probably the most evil in the comic, only people who rival him in attempted bodycount sre the next two I'll be proposing, one of whom is flipping Unicron, so Shockwave's definitely bad enough, and has the extra nasty crimes of his attempt to invade and turn Earth into a warzone with concentration camps, and his gleeful desire to want to vivisect humans before it's all said and done.

Final Verdict?

Very cut-and-paste, but a Keeper.

@Mir: Surprisingly, no. Cobra Commander is a consistent villain in the comics, and though he's a bit on the silly side at times, he's generally portrayed as irredeemable and caring for nothing but power.

The issue is he really doesn't do anything special after the first arc. He forces the Transformers to work for him against their will by hacking their bodies and orchestrates an attack on the United Nations in the first arc, then spends all of the second arc working with the heroes to save Earth (because he can't very well conquer a barren husk), and then rounds out his final arc by getting upstaged by Serpentor for most of it, then pulling a Hijacked by Ganon and trying to kill the heroes using Serpentor's body, but beyond bland boasting of world domination, it's all pretty generic, especially in a comic with Shockwave and Golobulus (the actual other candidate alongside Unicron)

What is the Work

Monster Island Buddies is a comedy Godzilla series that occasionally dives into Drama and multi-arc storylines. It’s about the daily life of Godzilla and his buddies told with Godzilla toys. The specific arc involves a weakness in space and time that brings many different alternate universe Godzilla’s into one place, unfortunately, it brings Godzilla: earth 1215-84 who precedes to kill the Godzillas and Godzilla prime is sent into different dimensions trying to escape with Godzilla: earth 1215-84 terrorizing earth prime

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

Godzilla: earth 1215-84 is an evil alternate version of Godzilla that was mutated by the oxygen destroyer after annihilating all of Japan. He finds his way to the prime universe and seeing that there are other Godzillas in a sense of arrogant pride he attempts to annihilate all of them so he can be the true Godzilla massacring various alternate universe forms of Godzilla. as Godzilla and Minilla attempt to escape but Godzilla 1215-84 tears Godzilla primes leg off and attacks Minilla knocking him out. He then continues on his massacre killing any Godzillas he comes in contact with. He eventually finds the alternate universe device and steals it after nearly killing Mechagodzilla. He then brings the unstable dimension device into the city to summon and kill unsuspecting Godzillas, the first one he kills being chibi Godzilla, a kid without a second thought. He also sets the machine to explode and nuke the whole city if anyone tampers with it. During the fight final battle he brutally stabbed and nearly kills Minilla with vicious ferocity as his father can only watch in horror.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

None, even the tragic aspect of Godzilla, hating what he’s become is absent. Godzilla: earth 1215-84 is extremely prideful in what he became.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

The series is usually lighthearted, they can have dark villains but they are usually played for laughs on occasion. The closest Godzilla: earth 1215-84 gets to laughter is extreme black comedy and even then that’s few and far between

Final Verdict?

In a lighthearted comedic toy series, Godzilla: earth 1215-84 stands out as a truly a vicious psychotic monster.

edit: just added a horrendous act he did I that forgot to put in the post

Yes to Shockwave and the Godzilla (what happens to the latter?).

From his character page (and acknowledged in your EP):

  • Was Once a Man: Mutated into a more monstrous and powerful form by a flawed Oxygen Destroyer.

Can you expand on this and what it means for his agency?

@ACW thrown into the sun by an alternate universe mecha Godzilla after Godzilla son goes nuclear and beats him. It's a very weird series

Also I did not know I need to clarify that, sorry new at this

The Oxygen Destroyer is a super weapon used to kill the first Godzilla. This seems less 'was once a man' and more 'in this reality, the Oxygen Destroyer made him stronger when he absorbed it.'

@Godzillarich: 43 is asking if the Oxygen Destroyer turned him evil. IE: was he just an evil Godzilla who became more powerful as a result of the OD or was he turned evil by it.

It's okay... I'm not saying no yet, I just want clarity on how he became what he became. He sounds like a sadistic monster but I can't upvote him until I know that's by his own volition and not by the effects of the Oxygen Destroyer.

[up] In that case I'll say yes.

@43110 after he destroys all of Japan they attempt to kill him with the oxygen destroyer but instead he mutates into his current form. This is before the plot kicks off with the alternate universe stuff that brings him into the prime universe.

Edit: by all accounts yes he destroyed all of Japan

Hello there, got the notice to have a look!

For the Deadpool stuff, I needed examples not in self-demonstrating mode to rewrite YMMV.Deadpool, so I went to Monster.Marvel Comics to look see if the characters previously written up in self-demonstrating mode had approved entries. The ones for General Stryfe and Sgt. Wadey Wilson had some typos (like misspelling Stryfe) and some other writing issues, so I suggested on the locked pages thread some replacement text.

I would have zero problem deleting Complete Monster from Deadpool's YMMV entirely and leave that to the Marvel page. Let me know what's the right way to go!

Covered in Star Wars Cleanup, Deadpool, and Web Video sand. I'm not coarse and rough, but I get everywhere.
