Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Making a second post so I can ping ~𝕋𝕒𝕓𝕤. It was them who cut and moved the content to DarthWiki.Wikizilla Roleplay. I must assume that the content could not be found anywhere, and the page creators never responded, according to our sandbox.

Post was here.

I must have forgotten we talked about SCP Containment Breach. I was wondering if SCP 106 counted there.

Yes to Tiffany.

I'm a little confused — there was a CM entry for Wikizilla Roleplay? Yes, I requested the roleplay page be cut. It did not meet the thread's criteria for "publicly accessible" since the chat required log-in, and content didn't exist in a digestible format and therefore tropes could not be verified.

This whole thing actually got me to go on a little exploration of the SCP universe.

I learned that the Scarlet King is very much a Depending on the Writer thing. I was gonna suggest we mention that on the write up, but since that applies to basically everything on that site, I say we leave it be. It also helps the version we have up is based off of two specific stories by one author.

I think. Sometimes the canon-that-is-not-actually-canon is hard to keep track of.

Basically, I'm saying I had an idea but thought better of it.

I will ask, though: Has SCP-035 ever been discussed? It's a mask that is fully sapient and takes over whomever wears it. Thing is, I don't think it's heinous enough. In a vacuum, I'd say it would likely count. Unless it has redeeming factors I missed, I just read its wiki entry on the Containment Breach site.

Okay, I got another Chris Lee candidate for us...

What's the setting?

Castle of the Living Dead is an old black-and-white horror flick from about 1964, another one of those films with a title that's technically accurate (Lee's character goes on a monologue about how his taxidermied animals are so lifelike they might as well be alive) but tricks you into thinking you're watching a movie about vampires or zombies. Lee plays Count Drago (improvising most of his lines because the script was lost), a wealthy noble visited by a traveling circus troupe. Gradually, things become creepier, as they tend to do. Now, Drago?

Who is Drago? What has he done?

During the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, Drago is an seemingly-affable noble with a liking for taxidermied animals, obsessed with the image of "eternal beauty" he preserves flawlessly via a chemical that instantly kills and makes rigid the body it's injected to. Drago boasts an impressive collection of lifelike animal statues, buuuut as our not-so-Genre Savvy troupe (except for a dwarf who listens to the obligatory creepy old woman) finds out, Drago has interest in other specimens... the most "dangerous and intelligent animal of them all," which he constantly finds excuses to avoid specifying.

Yes, as one might figure out, Drago is actually a serial killer with human victims. One after another, the members of the troupe start to die one after another, either through Drago poisoning them with the chemical himself or the sadistic murders of his right-hand, Sandro, whom Drago fully permits the bloodthirstiness of with a quip that "he has an affinity for bizarre forms of death." Drago attempts to poison the heroine to add her to his collection, obsessing over her perfect beauty that he wants to capture, and brings her at gunpoint to his personal collection: a collection of dozens of unfortunate victims mounted as taxidermied trophies, including the bodies of the heroine's own friends. Drago attempts to kill the remaining heroes, but thankfully, said Chekhov's Gunman old woman—the only survivor of Drago's long history of murder, whom he drove to insanity—returns, and hits Drago with one of his own chemical-laced darts, freezing him in place.

Any mitigating factors?

Nope. None. Giant body count, no redeeming qualities, his affability is a farce. His second-in-command, Sandro, is a real psycho who's kinda like Anatole 2.0., and he's probably worth a post, but Drago is the Big Bad.

Conclusion?

Keeper. A much more palatable Christopher Lee keep than Rayner for me.

[up][up] The Mask was the former court jester of the Hanged King; the King himself is not a CM but his Ambassador is. And yeah, I do agree on the possibility that the Mask is not heinous enough, just another anomolous object in my honest opinion.
