Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous Post
Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

  • Moral Event Horizon: Abby more or less crosses it in "You've Been Unfriended", when she decides decides to pick on Chloe just just after she's gotten back from suspension, even going as far as calling her names like "blondie".

Also, for bad examples that I could think of really? Chinatsu from Yuru Yuri, Ms. Chesterfield cuz she popped a ball, Edward the Platypus (Wat!?), Miss Hattie and so on... Oh the dark days of the thread which I didn't join.

Moving on, anyone has a thought on that Yakuza candidate?

I will say one thing about Cartman his MEH crossing of killing Tenorman's parents and feeding them to him stands out as one of the most infamous crosses I have seen. Even if it is Played for Laughs. I was genuinely shocked and disturbed when I first saw that episode.

If you were to ask me in 2012 if Cartman was this trope. I would have said hell yes.

[up][up][up][up][up] Easy [tup] to Abby. Calling people "blonde" is among the worst crimes against humanity I've ever seen this last decade, and I'm genuinely scared of going out nowadays because of it.

[up][up][up][up][up][up] Oh my God, was that serious? If being a bit jerky is enough to be a Complete Monster, then we should list every human on Earth as this since everyone has its dark moments LOL. I also remember Sqwidward from Sponge Bob being listed earlier. Wat.

Then we also have this gem.

Another problem with Abby, that I just thought of: It's a reality show, thus violating the no real people rule.

I've discovered these 2 Thorgal/YMMV enrties:

  • Complete Monster:
    • Shardar from The Fall of Brek Zarith is especially nasty, deciding that rather than just surrender his rule to the rightful heir to the throne, it's better to poison his own court and destroy all his treasures, leaving the kingdom bankrupt, hoping that, to restore it, the new ruler will be forced to become as big a tyrant as him, while he escapes and plans to start new conquest, using the psychic powers of the baby he kidnapped.
    • Volsung of Nichor is a Dirty Coward introduced and killed in the third album of the series. In The Guardian of the Keys, he is brought back to life by evil lesser deity, Nidhogg, who turns him into a perfect doppleganger of Thorgal. The deal is simple - he will seduce another diety who happened to have a soft spot for Thorgal, the titular Guardian, steal her magic belt, and bring it to Nidhogg, who will return him to his real form and grant him new life. What does Volsung do? He steals the belt, returns to Midgard, kills Thorgal, takes his place, and, using magic powers of the belt, takes over the control of his village, murdering the current chief, rapes his wife, and threatens to smash the head of Thorgal's baby daughter, all to destroy Thorgal's good name and avenge his own death...that he had brought upon himself - Thorgal's only crime was being there when Volsung got himself killed, he hadn't move a finger to help it and couldn't have stop it in any way.

These entries were already questioned by users as early as in 2014. By 2018, not much has changed.

Here's how I go on that....I think Shardar should be cut. A review of the old one...he is upset about his son's death. He dismisses him as a fat coward, but "he was my son" regardless.

Volsung on the other hand is a rock-solid keeper. He's got the lowest resources of any major Thorgal villains and manages to be one of the most ridiculously vile members of any bad guy in the series. Thorgal is packed to the brim of bastards with tiny glimpses of humanity, and Volsung is a major exception to the latter part.

Speaking of bad examples, you should've seen the one from The Room. Yes it had a Complete Monster entry and no it wasn't everyone's favorite drug dealer Chris R.grin

  • Lisa from The Room. She has an affair with her fiancee's best friend, claims to not even like him, and admits she stays with him and keeps up the affair just to torture him. Added onto this her non-emotional reaction to her mother stating she has terminal breast cancer and [spoiler: her pretty much ignoring the still-warm corpse of her fiancee after he commited suicide and instead being happy at being able to be with his best friend], and you have one cold-hearted, selfish monster.

Lighty, think Volsung's entry is good as is? If so, I'll request the deletion of the other one (both are at Comic Books: I to Z FWIW) after this week's batch is taken care of.

I think a rewrite might be good, if only to streamline it a bit (the question and the italics are a no-no either way).

Hell, I wouldn't mind a full effortpost, but that's probably just me.

Now, then...

  • Warhammer: Valkia the Bloody is the champion of Khorne. A mortal warrior of the Schwarzvolf clan, Valkia murdered her father to take control, purged her tribe of the 'weak,' married the chieftain of the bloody Clans, raped him to produce her heirs and eventually killed him for his sexism. After her mortal death, Valkia was reborn as a Daemon of Khorne, leading a savage campaign to exterminate her old tribe, killing every man, woman and child while personally slaying her own daughter and brother without remorse. Since then, Valkia arrives to battlefields to promote horrific slaughters in Khorne's name, even teasing the Norscan clans the Blood Eagle and having it practiced on an entire citadel of dwarves. Valkia inspired a campaign that sought to wipe out all life in Nordland and during the End Times, helps Chaos's forces to come and slaughter all in their path. Devoted to slaughter and bloodshed, Valkia embodies the Khornate philosophy that "it matters not from where the blood flows. Only that it flows."

  • Ghoulies: Wicked sorcerer Malcolm Graves attempts to sacrifice his infant son, only to be stopped by his lover Anastasia. Furiously, Malcolm painfully sacrifices Anastasia instead. Dying in the intervening 21 years, Malcolm's evil spirit survives and orchestrates his son, Jonathan, finding his old items to call up the Ghoulies. Malcolm directs the Ghoulies to kill all of Jonathan's friends, while luring Jonathan so Malcolm can sacrifice him and drain him of his life and youth to return to life, gloating that Jonathan only ever existed for his father's dark designs.

  • Howling VI: RB Harker is a vampire who runs a traveling circus, while enslaving people as 'freaks' to be exploited in the show. Harker is also a Serial Killer who murders for food and pleasure wherever the circus goes, often eliminating those close to his chosen acquisitions to steal any attachments from them. Having killed the family of the werewolf hero Ian, including Ian's child sister, Harker seeks to frame Ian for the killings and murders a police officer when he works out the blood on Harker's hands. Finally, Harker drops all pretense of civility to attempt to murder Ian and all his friends.

  • Pit and the Pendulum: Tomas Torquemada runs a horrific regime in Spain where countless people are tortured and executed in show trials, all to keep up a weak show of false piety to mask his sadism. When he lusts after a woman, Torquemada has her arrested and tortured before imprisoning her husband and attempting to extort sex from her in exchange for his life. When she resists, Torquemada beats her and cuts out her tongue, before continuing his activities, attempting to subject her husband to the worst death he can think of with the titular pit and pendulum.

  • The Shadow Builder: The evil demon known as the Shadow Builder was an angel who despised God for creating light and humanity. Massacring the sect who summoned him, the Shadow Builder aims to sacrifice a pure-hearted child to usher in hell on earth, stealing through his town to murder multiple people and taking their souls while torturing others. In one incident, the Shadow Builder forces a man to murder his own wife and sends him after the heroes before capturing the child, Christopher and attempting to murder him to open a portal to hell that will devour all humanity.

  • The Silver Kiss: The vampire Christopher is a centuries-old monster who resembles an innocent child. Orchestrating the death of his sire and mentor, Christopher murdered his own mother when she rejected him before turning his brother Simon. Fleeing a vengeful Simon, Christopher leaves a trail of murder and bloodshed behind him, relishing in the fear and agony of his victims. Christopher plays an innocent child to lure people into trusting him before killing them, sometimes torturing them first. Resuming his activities in America, Christopher creates a string of corpses as Simon tracks him when Simon finally corners him with his love interest Zoe, Christopher decides to murder Zoe before he escapes, just to give his brother more pain.

  • Venom: Carlton Drake is the CEO of Life Industries with a god complex. Coming into possession of the Symbiotes, Drake experiments with homeless people, having them attached to and devoured by the Symbiotes in massive numbers to learn how to control them, even using the Symbiote to murder a doctor who assists Eddie Brock. When he merges with the Symbiote Riot, Drake eagerly embraces his newfound power and assists Riot in killing all in his path, intending to bring the Symbiotes to devour all humanity to satisfy his ego.

Once Sigvald gets written up, I'll submit him then Valkia at the end of the tree.

Also, a trimming and de-potholing of an old entry:

  • Savage: Roderick Whittle's manner is a mere Mask of Sanity, hiding the fact that he is in fact the infamous Jack the Ripper. We are first introduced to Whittle when 15-year-old Trevor Bentley, trying to escape some robbers, spies him killing a prostitute and mutilating the body. Trevor manages to escape, but ends up on the same boat as Whittle, bound for the United States. Whittle attacks and kills a few more people, and plans to continue his spree in the US, making it seem the work of "savages". Eventually, Whittle also kills some more people, including a teenager; Trevor's Love Interest—-later mocking Trevor about how he used her corpse, unbeknownst to him, as a shield against Trevor's bullets; a posse of men sent to capture or kill him and placing their corpses in macabre positions; and numerous women. He finally tries to kill Trevor and his new love interest, but not before revealing that he has become a sheriff's deputy named "John Carver". With over 20 brutal murders to his name, as well as a taste for torture and possibly even cannibalism, Roderick Whittle is easily one of the most psychotic and sadistic versions of Jack the Ripper ever put into fiction.
