Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Speaking of entries that need fixing, there's this one that's been bugging me for a while.

  • Elephantmen: Dr. Nikken, the man responsible for the program that created Hip Flask and the other Elephantmen, shows absolutely no remorse for kidnapping and killing thousands of women or for creating a race of sentient beings whose sole intended purpose was war. In fact, he's rather proud of his accomplishments.

I'm not familiar with this series, and from the entry he sounds like he counts, but this write-up is way too short and gives little context as to the specifics of his crimes.

Why so serious?

Alright, here's the write up for Marcus!

  • The Black Hearts: Marcus Black is the sadistic, psychopathic, father to Mercury Black. He was an Atlas soldier where he joined solely to kill people. He was disgraced and discharged after an assault on Vacuo. He later became an alcoholic assassin who sometimes tortured his victims for his own entertainment and sometimes for extra pay. He regularly beat his wife, Melanie, and beat Mercury mostly out anger and sadism. When Melanie only wanted him to eat dinner before abruptly leaving for a job, he beat her after she decided to argue with him about it and took Mercury with him. On that job, the targe had his daughter with him and he held her at gunpoint with the intent to kill simply because she was a witness. But not before forcing Mercury to kill her father right in front of her, despite his own son's protests to at least kill her first so she didn't have to watch her father die. After living in the mountains, Mercury finally snaps at Marcus and calls him a horrible father and a disgrace of a soldier. This prompts him to ruthlessly attempt to murder his own son "free of charge." He never cared one bit about his family and did many horrible things without remorse.

Yeah I'm going to take the side of percussion and lean towards no for Canavagh. He does sound like an evil prick but he doesn't sound heinous enough if you compare him to the likes of Maxwell Roth and Jack the Ripper, which is frustrating for me that Jack can't qualify because of his quality about his mother.

Well, as I'm recovering and can't work, work out or exercise, I've got a shit load of time on my hands.

Here's one of the many movies I've crushed by productively using it:

What's the work?

Oblivion is a 2013 post-apocalyptic action film starring Tom Cruise. In it, he plays engineer Jack Harper, who lives on Earth in the year 2077, along with his wife, the duo being the last people on the planet while everyone else has gone to space in the "Tet", a space station meant to take people to a moon of Jupiter now that Earth's been rendered inhospitable thanks to the invading Scavengers, who destroyed the Moon, resulting in catastrophic damage to the planet. As Jack and his wife, Victoria or "Vica", they are responsible for defending structures and machinery left by the "Tet". However, things start to show they aren't as they seem when Jack saves a woman whose crew is killed by the Tet's drones and he runs into a group of Scavengers who reveal they aren't aliens but humans being hunted by the drones.

Who is "Sally"? What has she done?

The A.I. behind the Tet who, surprise, surprise, isn't so friendly after all. It's M.O. being to plunder planets for their natural resources before destroying them, obviously killing all life on the planet in question as it does so. 60 years ago, Sally destroyed the moon to kill the people of Earth and lessen resistance to it taking the planet's resources. After the war, she captured Jack and Vica, making thousands of clones of Jack to use as slave-like warriors forced to fight against humanity. Spending the next 50 years having Jack and Vica work to repair the very machines she uses to slaughter humans, almost killing Jack when he comes across the path of her drones.

Falsely claiming she will allow Jack and Vica to join the rest of humanity on the space voyage, Sally routinely wipes their memories to ensure they will never become disloyal. When the Scavengers get Jack to see through its deception, he and his wife hatch a plan to destroy the Tet. Attacking the Scavenger base with its drones, Sally kills many of them. When Jack and the Scavenger leader make their way to the Tet, Sally tries to convince them to let her live, proclaiming herself to be Jack's god, though they both heroically give their lives to destroy the mechanical monstrosity.

Heinousness?

Not only is she the only villain but her pattern of planetary destruction zooms her over any baseline.

Mitigating factors?

First up, agency. She doesn't have the world's most complex personality but Sally is a happily manipulative liar who greedily takes the lifesource of planets without any care for the damage she causes and even calls herself a god to Jack.

Secondly, she offers to spare the lives of Jack and his wife in the climax if they don't kill her but this is obvious bullshit. Even if she didn't kill them right away, Sally was going to lead to the destruction of their homeworld.

Verdict

Was unsure at first but I'm thinking keep now.

I... never recalled Sally as a keep myself given the weird nature of what she actually is, but I'm leaning a (very tentative) yea for now.

If she counts? This is going to make the fourth work under the name of "Oblivion" to get a qualifier.

'Yes' to Sally, I think.

Now then, got us film candidates from myself tonight....a duo, to be precise.

What's the work?

The Doctor and the Devils is a 1985 film starring Timothy Dalton, Patrick Stewart, and....Twiggy (>_>) based on a true story.

Our story follows one Dr. Thomas Rock (Dalton), a famous anatomist during the 18th century who is seeking new ways to examine the human body to further scientific research, however the lack of bodies that aren't decayed by the time he gets his hands on them through normal routes leaves his research stalled.

Refusing to waver, Rock decides to employ more....dirty tactics, putting up bounties for corpses brought to him, expecting some vagrants looking to make a quick buck to do some grave robbing and bring him some recently buried corpses.

Unfortunately for all and sunder, two men decide to take up Rock on his offer and bring him fresh corpses....VERY fresh....

Who are they?

Timothy Broom and Robert Fallon (The latter played by the PERFECTLY villainous actor Jonathan Pryce) are the two main villains of the story. A pair of dirty, oft-drunk thugs who wander the streets mugging and intimidating for extra cash to buy more alcohol and prostitutes with, Fallon and Broom eventually learn of Rock's "corpse bounties," and quickly decide to make extra cash in a more....murderous way.

What have they done?

Fallon and Broom are introduced as they brutalize and intimidate people left and right for cash all while merrily swigging away at their alcoholic drinks. When they learn of Rock's paying for corpses, the duo attempt to dig up some corpses from a cemetery to no avail.

Later cornering one of their debtees, an extremely sick, bedridden man, Fallon comes up with the brilliant idea to get Rock REALLY fresh corpses, and suffocates the sick man with a pillow. Broom, though at first freaking out, quickly realizes Fallon's thought process and assists him in trading in the corpse to Rock for a sizable amount of money.

Realizing they've hit the jackpot, Broom and Fallon begin a routine....finding homeless or fairly lonely people, they "befriend" the person, lure them to their hideout, then suffocate them with a pillow. When their landlord tries to rent their hideout to a small family, Broom beats the landlord before threatening her life as well as giddily terrifying the family's small daughter.

Though Rock is rather suspicious of the whole thing regarding the corpses the duo bring him, he ignores the implications of Broom and Fallon bringing him so many fresh corpses.

A dozen people later? Broom and Fallon are living it up, spending their nights partying and drinking. Luring in their latest victim, an elderly, senile woman who they trick into following them to find her lost brother, Fallon and Broom try to suffocate her, only for Fallon to freak out as she survives and strangle her with his bare hands.

Broom outraged that they now can't sell the body because she has marks on her neck, the duo dump the corpse in a sewer then go about their business, later taking two hookers back to their hideout for fun.

When Broom learns that the police have caught onto Rock and the duo, he orders Fallon to pack up so they can leave. However Fallon, now addicted to feeling a person die in his hands, tries to get Broom to help him kill the two hookers, Jen and Alice. A disturbed Broom ditches Fallon, leaving Fallon to murder Alice then corner Jen.

As Fallon tries to murder Jen while simultaneously beating her and forcing himself on her, Broom rats out Fallon's location to Jen's sort-of boyfriend, who promptly saves Jen and takes down Broom and Fallon.

Broom proceeds to instantly demand an audience with the governor, at which point he cuts a deal and pins everything on Fallon, leaving Fallon to be executed.

A blubbering, pathetic Fallon is hanged while begging for mercy and trying to talk his way out of his death, and we last see Broom as he laughs at Fallon's hanging body and mocks the idea that he regrets anything he has done before walking off into the night.

Rock is ousted and, though not being formally tried for his implication in mass murder, he is ostracized and left to wallow in his regret and pity at what he allowed to happen by willfully ignoring the obvious crimes of Fallon and Broom.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

None for either man. Both put on charming masks of men who just like to drink and sleep around, but they in truth are brutal thugs who can and will assault and/or murder innocents at the drop of a hat.

They have no care for each other, as while they are highly chummy together and treat each other as friends, both have zero problem screaming at or threatening the other, and Broom ultimately sells out Fallon and laughs about it.

Finally, though it may sound like Broom has standards? He really doesn't. He freaks out at first when Fallon kills their first victim, but he instantly gets over it and realizes how much money they can make, and later, when Fallon tries to murder the hookers just for fun, Broom proclaims he's a "mad bastard" who would "kill me too if you got the chance," but this is pragmatism more than anything. Broom just realizes that Fallon's a lunatic who enjoys killing and could get them both caught, while Broom truly just cares about money.

Heinousness?

The only truly evil characters in the story, with over a dozen murders to their name and numerous other counts of abuse or attempted murder.

The only real issue to discuss is whether they BOTH count. The duo share most of their crimes, however Fallon has the added bit of trying to murder two hookers for fun (succeeding in one's case) and starting their spree, while Broom has numerous extra bits of brutalizing innocents, threatening people, and ultimately betraying Fallon and getting him hanged while laughing at it.

If I had to pick, I'd say Fallon is the worse one here, as his explicit motive of just enjoying killing is played pretty nasty, but Broom still has quite a bit of nastiness to him as well, so it's up to the thread here.

Final Verdict?

I'd say Fallon's an easy Keeper, while Broom is a bit more uncertain. I'd probably lean towards keeping him, but will understand if only Fallon is upvoted.

After watching the episode "Brothers", I think Lore from Star Trek: The Next Generation should be disqualified as a Complete Monster. While his actions throughout the series are EASILY enough to send him over the Moral Event Horizon, he expresses grief that his creator is dying (The information is enough to get him to stay with Soon and Data), showing that he does care for the man on some level. And he even implies regret over the monster that he is with the line: "You could have fixed me!". Suggesting he knows what a monster he is and actually considers himself defective because of it.

So while he IS a monster, I don't think he's a COMPLETE Monster.
