Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

By the way, Turtle Power is looking to either get cut or disambiguated, so we are gonna need a new pothole for Jinmen. I think Psycho for Hire is appropriate since he is always working for other demons, or Reptiles Are Abhorrent since he is a turtle demon.

Yes to Gyiu'rak and the demon and that's a really silly trope to pick for a CM name, no qualms if there's an excuse to boot that.

Same for the vote.

Here's the thing with Koba: Koba might be a victim of what Gensys did...however, by the end, Koba has wholly abandoned it in a genocidal fervor for power. When he starts not just betraying other apes, but gleefully doing so and murdering apes for power, to the point he's willing to start his own Stalinist purges? Koba goes beyond any justified anger or FE for him. By the end, he's a monster.

[tup] Gyiu'rak and the Demon.

Honestly, all this talk of the Freudian Excuse and how far one can go for it to be justification reminds me one time way back I thought about bringing up Samara after her actions in Rings. The movie seems to go out of its way to demonize her as much as possible by making her murderous pedophilic father seem the lesser of two evils, and tries to establish she just enjoys killing people regardless of how horrible her past was. I still don't know. She's one of the most iconic examples of horror Tragic Villain after the first two movies, but the whole Omnicidal Maniac things she becomes in the third just rubs me the wrong way.

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

Okay, I'm gonna kick off another Scravok during a...let's just call it a difficult day.

Origin is from the Dead of Night trilogy from Marvel MAX, which retold the origins of dark Marvel characters like Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, and Devil-Slayer. I'm covering the Dead of Night: Devil-Slayer mini today.

What has Belathauzer done?

A minor demon (based on a one-time baddie from Defenders) Belathauzer is working toward a plot he calls "Xenogenesis"—the rebirth of the demon race on Earth. To this end Belathauzer has been secretly committing massacres under the cover of war. Darfur, Iraq, so on, so forth—when our hero Sgt. Danny Sylva returns to Iraq, Belathauzer has infiltrated a sociopathic mercenary unit called Bloodstone and gotten to his usual habits.

Hoo, boy, has he gotten to work. Belathauzer has tortured dozens upon dozens of innocent Iraqi civilians, as well as several American soldiers, to death, piling their bodies up in gigantic mountains or dangling them from slaughterhouse hooks. This is par the course for him. All the thousands Belathauzer has slaughtered go to fueling Xenogenesis, where Belathauzer's plans go:

  • Have the demon race tear apart humanity. A manufactured Armageddon
  • The angels come down. Belathauzer rips them apart too and destroys Heaven
  • When Hell is all that's left, Belathauzer will kill Satan and rule over the universe of eternal suffering left in its place

When Sylva, with the power of Devil-Slayer, tries to stop Belathauzer in the final battle, Belathauzer tortures Sylva by sticking his claw into an open wound and eloquently describing his plans for Sylva: kill him, rape his corpse, pimp out his soul, then have his demon minions run his soul over with a train for all eternity. He never gets the chance; Sylva cuts off his head and Belathauzer, in death, decays into a mound of literal shit.

Any mitigating factors?

Nah. Belathauzer's buddying up with the archangel Gabriel in all this, but Gabriel seems to be just enough of a WIE to avoid this trope—he's positive the extermination of humanity will also result in the extermination of Hell. And while his rhetoric may or may not hold up, inarguably he fails the standard compared to Belathauzer, who is a flying polevault over this line even for the Darker and Edgier property.

We'll see a few more from the other comics, but Belathauzer is as easy as they come.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Okay so while Mir and Scraggle have been clearing out Hardy Boys, they let me have this candidate.

From the Undercover Brothers series, the novel "Running on Fumes", we have: Arthur Stench.

What is the work?

Undercover Brothers re-imagines Frank and Joe as being teenage secret agents, working for an organization called "American Teens Against Crime". They are assigned missions where they infiltrate locations to try and uncover the culprit.

In this particular story their assignment involves investigating a remote community of environmental activists living in the desert, who have created a society that runs completely on renewable energy.

The leader of their community is:

Who is Arthur Stench and what has he done?

Stench is introduced as the charismatic leader of this cultsociety of eco-enthusiasts, who has a reputation of using extreme methods to achieve his goals.

An example of this is sending his followers to stage a public demonstration by throwing paint at random townies.

This leads the enraged townies to form an angry mob who raid and deface the eco-camp. To which Stench uses to further work up the eco community by claiming that the raiders were in fact paid off by the oil industry to war with them. Stench also retaliates to the raid by heading into town and rigging a car to explode, further sparking the conflict.

Deeming Stench has crossed the line, Frank and Joe break cover and try to take him down, but are outmatched by Stench and his bodyguard, so are forced to flee.

Later the brothers try to unearth the truth by breaking into Stench's personal quarters. They discover that, Stench is secretly on the payroll of the oil industry and was assigned to watch-over and sabotage the eco-activists, in order to discredit them and make them look like violent lunatics in the public's eye.

The brothers are found by Stench and captured. Stench reveals his grandplan to take out the oil industry's chief alternate energy rival: nuclear power. He has built a remotely operated helicopter, and intends to crash it into a nuclear power plant to trigger a cataclysmic disaster, and decides to bound and gag the brothers in the helicopter to make them look like suicidal terrorists.

The bros are saved by a girl they met at the eco-camp, secretly an undercover detective, by holding Stench at arrow point. Stench is arrested for his crimes and taken into custody.

Mitigating Factors?

Hah, nope. Corrupt Corporate Executive fueled only by greed. No sob story, no loved ones, no nothing.

Heinous Standard?

For most of the book, there was nothing remarkable about Stench. But then at the end, his final act of attempting to blow up a nuclear power plant pole-vaults him to the very top of the heinous standard.

While its never explicitly said how many people would be killed in this incident, I think we can lowball it to the average number of staff working in a nuclear power plant, which would be in the hundreds at the very least. There is a very prominent looming sense of horror with Frank and Joe feeling devastated about this potential disaster and how they would be forever blamed for it.

Final verdict?

I think he keeps?

Been two weeks since Season 3 of Harley Quinn (2019) finished. Long story short, nobody counts.

Poison Ivy and Bruce Wayne are the closest to main villains of the season, and both (obviously) have a plethora of disqualifying factors. The Joker not only still shows to care for his family, but he eventually became mayor of Gotham and actively works to make Gotham a better place.

The only villains without redeeming qualities are Two-Face, and Mad Hatter. Two-Face does have a nasty moment of trying to kill Joker's step-son, even when Joker drops out of the candidacy like Two-Face wanted, but still not heinous enough. And Mad Hatter is nowhere close to the heinous standard, and isn't really treated seriously.

And yes, AK's correct about Harley. Joker was even willing to drop out of the race when his stepson was threatened. Two-Face may be worth keeping an eye on though.
