Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Easy yes to Melnikov. Not a one of those qualities come remotely close to mitigating if you watch the show.

Here's more Modesty Blaise coming at yah.

What’s the Work?

“Death Symbol” is a story arc that involves Modesty and Willie tracking down an old friend of Willie’s daughter, who has been kidnapped during her visit to Tibet. The two find out she’s been taken to a village where they encounter an unsavory opponent.

Who is He?

Yen Kang is an obese former commanding officer turned tyrant of a hidden Tibet village located in the Tsam-La valley.

What has he done?

Having faked his death years prior, Kang takes over the village with his army of 50 renegade Chinese soldiers at his beck and call. Having the village’s 200 inhabitants used as slave labor, or else their children will suffer, Kang also converted a Buddhist monastery into his own brothel, the Pleasure House, where women are purchased to be his and his soldiers’ sex slaves, the younger the better.

With over dozens of women forced to sleep with Kang and his men, giving them the choice of either doing what he says or face constant abuse, anyone who tries to escape with one of them is killed on sight. When Modesty launches a raid on the village, Kang ends up dogpiled by his twenty sex slaves, who murder him with every last bit of anger from their years of physical and sexual abuse.

Redeeming Qualities?

None.

Heinousness?

Slaver of hundreds, rapist of dozens, and all around asshole. Not bad for a village tyrant.

Conclusion

Another easy keep.

[down] I'll check out the books eventually, but nobody counts in the movie.

[down][down][down] I have one, maybe two, more Modesty proposals.

So after some consideration, here's my final Modesty Blaise proposal for now. Not the most confident in this one, but we'll see how you guys feel.

What’s the Work?

“The Aristo” story arc involves Modesty and Willie crashing into the sea and being saved by a passing cargo ship. The captain, with his pregnant wife Jo, warns the two about a dreaded pirate who prowls the seas. And guess who shows up afterwards?

Who is He?

The Aristo is an infamous aristocratic pirate who roams the seas on The Etonian.

What has he done?

Committing a vast amount of robbery by stealing cargo from any ship he sees, the Aristo is well known for slaughtering entire ships full of innocents should he be met with resistance. Killing the males, the Aristo leaves the women alive, mainly so that he can sell them to brothels after he allows his men to rape them first.

Modesty comes up with a plan to save herself and a captain’s pregnant wife Jo by disguising herself as a royal heiress, with Jo posing as her sister, leading the Aristo to hold her and Jo for ransom. But once Modesty reveals it’s all been a ploy, she escapes along with Jo and Willie.

With the Aristo pissed that a woman outsmarted him, he leads a manhunt for Modesty and the others’ lives, even willing to have the pregnant Jo killed if it means payback. So Modesty fakes her death to trick the Aristo into coming close, with Modesty mule-kicking him so hard into the air, that he cracks his neck upon hitting the sand and dies.

Redeeming Qualities?

Zero.

Heinousness?

Now, the Aristo doesn’t do a whole lot onscreen, aside from trying to kill Jo and her recently born baby. What's he's known for, his slaughtering of ships and sexual slave tradings, are offscreen.

But, I can say that his reputation very much precedes him; the Aristo is a vile man, with most of the plot being the ship’s captain and Modesty doing what they can to ensure that the Aristo doesn’t murder everybody onboard, rape the women, and then sell them as slaves. The narrative still treats the Aristo as a dreaded, feared menace who has left behind a legacy of blood.

He's also the only modern day pirate in the series, so he has that niche going for him.

Conclusion

Very tentative keep.

Yes to Aristo, Melnikov, Kang, Landon, the Shape, the Countess, Ranavalova, Rosie and James.

I have a Star Trek candidate I would like to discuss, it's from Star Trek Strange New Worlds, the first season concluded almost 2 weeks, can I present the character now or should I wait till tomorrow?

Personally I go with a [tdown] to the Horrigan image, without context he looks like he's just standing on those dead bodies or just found them like that. Plus I mostly not feeling the image.

Rewatched btw and unfortunately, I think the Branagh Cassetti needs to go...I checked and he doens't have much beyond the one murder of Daisy, unlike the pattern established for others.

I do have a replacement Johnny Depp, though:

What's the work?

The Astronaut's Wife is a pretty lousy film from 1999 about an astronaut named Spencer who goes into space and an accident cuts him and his partner off for a few minutes. Spencer returns home, but is...changed and is certainly more dangerous now with his wife...

He's possessed by an alien.

Who is the alien?

A malevolent being that desires to come to earth for....reasons and hijack a special project...I'm not really sure why, but the alien murdered the real Spencer and possessed his body. With his partner in a ways, the alien murders him to keep the secret, inducing his wife's suicide. "Spencer" then seduces his wife Jillian and rapes her in a scene of dubious consent at best even if it was Spencer. As others begins to close in on the truth?

The alien begins systematically murdering them. It kills those closest to Jillian who is abused into silence by the alien, now that she's pregnant with twins. Jillian is terrified when her ally at NASA is murdered. And then her sister as well. Luring "Spencer" into a trap, she says he killed her husband. "Spencer" just sneers "Yes I did. And I fucked his wife" whereupon she tries to trick the alien by electrocution, making it think the twins are in danger.

It works! Except the alien emerges and possesses/kills Jillian instead. Has the twins, has a new marriage and...wins completely, about to have the kids do its evil bidding. What does it plan longterm?

Fuck if I know, guys.

Mitigating issues?

Nah, decent enough bodycount, the alien's a rational, reasoning being. It kills those it possesses, murders a bunch of people and rapes Jillian in her husband's body

Any questions?

Conclusion?

Yes.
