This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

~Worst Otaku Ever appeal

Please see Weblinks Are Not Examples, in addition. Acknowledgement is one thing, but we would like people to demonstrate understanding of the rules before letting them go do whatever they want on the wiki. Let's go back to the entry brought up here. How would you rewrite it so it's no longer a Zero-Context Example? Post the new version in this thread.

  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Her actual self dresses in this manner, which is a stark contrast to her cognition's Phantom Thief attire's more aristocratic look.

~Nara Numas appeal

Better. Please be aware that we expect folks to follow the rules even when tired, and we hope that this won't recur. Your suspension is released.

~Big Bad Shadow 25 appeal

We will hold you to that, as well as the rest of the forum rules. Your suspension is released.

~Lord Araghast appeal

Correct on both counts. Crosswicking means that a properly-written is added to both the work and the trope page. This is beneficial for a variety of reasons, so we want people to follow this rule.

Since you seem to get it, your suspension is released — but note that we are expecting that these slip-ups won't happen again.

~Shinn Bidan appeal

That's much better Example Indentation — one bullet point for game-> game, another bullet point for game -> adaptations, and another separate one for game -> remake.

We'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that these recent indexing/grammar slip-ups are from carelessness/forgetfulness. We do expect tropers to follow the rules regardless of mental circumstances, so please be more careful editing in the future. Your suspension is released.

~Beast C appeal

We are expecting you to revise the entry brought up here with proper Example Indentation before you can be released.

* Adaptational Dumbass: Downplayed. While not exactly a moron, this Peter seems less scientifically inclined than most other Peter Parkers. It's heavily implied that Peter's interest in science phased out after not being bitten by the spider, considering how much of his Teen Genius knowledge was applied to his crime fighting, most famously his web-shooters and his spider-tracers.
  • That said, he is way more careless with maintaining his Secret Identity than his other younger selves: within one month of being Spider-Man he's caught with his pants down when his daughter walks in on him eating ice cream in full costume. Meanwhile, both 616 and 1610 Peters were able to hide their identities much better and much longer.

A bit of a moot point since somebody already wrote up a more detailed version of that entry in Persona 5: The Phantom X, but okay.

  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Yuki's real-world self dresses in this manner, wearing a purple kimono with her hair tied up in a braid-like manner while speaking politely to Wonder and Yaoling when meeting them at the Shibuya Train Station, contrasting the more Western aristocratic look of her Phantom Idol-self.

~Tropers/DRCEQ appeal

The time period is less relevant than the fact that you clearly knew the edit was a recurring point of dispute but kept readding it. We don't care how you feel about this particular work, we care that you know how to resolve editing conflicts and apply this knowledge in the future.

So in case you haven't yet, please read Edit War then answer the question posed:

How can you avoid an edit war in the future if you disagree with someone's change to your entry and want to revert it? Edit reasons, as noted, do not count as discussion.

~Sergeant Bane appeal

Knowing why an example is Zero-Context Example is one thing, especially if it's being pointed out, but if you we want to be sure that you can write properly contextualized examples. So can you rewrite these additions so they have the information you clarified was missing?

~Comrade Tom appeal

All right, your suspension is released.

~MJ Trooper appeal

Correct. The discussion should also come to an agreement before any readditions or redeletions are done. Can you give a couple of places on this website where you can discuss these disputes (as listed on Edit War)?

~surgoshan appeal

All right, please demonstrate your understanding of the rules. Here are examples with bad Example Indentation that I pulled from Tsundere.Anime And Manga. Can you rewrite them so they have correct indentation? Post your revisions here.

  • Major: Kaoru Shimizu is generally a very sweet and kind girl, but her tsun side really flares up when she's around Goro. As the series advances, and especially after they finally begin dating each other her dere side takes over.
    • The sequel, Major 2nd has Mutsuko Sakura, who is also a dere type by default, but sometimes Daigo gets on her nerves by being clueless to her feelings and insensitive.

  • Alicia Melchiott of the Valkyria Chronicles anime adaptation has this early on, complete with calling her love interest Welkin "baka"! Of course, she only switches to tsundere mode at specific instances and she definitely mellows out.
    • Similarly, whenever we see Edy Nelson, another member of Squad 7, she's beating up on poor Homer. She's definitely more tsuntsun, though.
    • Those two characters are also the ones with the most well defined Girlish Pigtails. Coincidence?

~Tropers/Aipom-pom appeal

Additionally, reiterating that you were thumped before the suspension. We treat these as warnings and so if someone doubles down on the behavior that got them thupmed, that's a major red flag. Rudeness has been an issue with you previously so don't expect another chance if you're flagrantly rude again. Your suspension is released.

~Tropers/twofacetoo appeal

You're demanding that we see things from your POV, and you say that this is not the case, but you're asking that we expect to agree with "I was justified in acting way too rudely actually". That's, um, not a good sign. Still, you are correct that this thread is where we talk things out, so let's do that.

. You cannot be serious. A person doesn't like an entry I made, and rather than discuss it with me or chalk it up to a difference in personal opinion, they have the right to just delete it and move on?

Yes. This Is a Wiki

because it's petty and biased to act like my personal opinion is somehow more correct than anyone else's. But by this logic, I have the right to go about deleting any entry I find just because I personally don't agree with what it says, and nobody can argue against it

Nobody has said you cannot contest a deletion. In fact that's preferable to simply adding it back. But we expect you to do it civilly and within proper discussion avenues.

I am not able to 'ask the tropers' anything, my permissions were revoked and remain so to this day, hence why I am here

Again, you're being overly defensive. Ask The Tropers was simply cited as a place where you can have the aforementioned civil discussions.

All I want to know, before anything else, is do you (or anyone else on the moderation team) agree that the notifiers I received were, perhaps, not the best way to be told of my errors? That being insulted over my language skills and having my contribution erased from the site over someone else's biased opinion were possibly a little bit rude and hurtful? And that receiving nothing but insulting, rude and hostile notifiers from multiple users left me inherently angry and upset the moment a new notifier came through, because the only reason I would be receiving it would be (in my mind) because someone else wanted to yell at and abuse me over something

That tells us that you still feel like you were personally victimized by the notifiers that were being sent out. Take a look at that page. They are all standard and written fairly neutrally by design. They inform you that rules were broken and point you to places where you might improve your editing. Do you honestly think that means your skills are being insulted?

The bottom line is that this is an online wiki. The goal isn't to have "ownership" over one's edits and protect them from deletion, it is to have a nice, readable website with examples that follow the rules and tropers that know how to work together when it comes to accomplishing that. That does mean edits will be changed or removed if they don't fit the mission-vision statement. Please keep that in mind.

~Filip 04 appeal

That resolution is one thing, but we're reminding you that this is your second forum suspension in a short period of time, as you were previously suspended for posting about your wiki suspension on the forums. If you are suspended from the forums again (especially in the near future), another chance might not be in reach. Do you have any questions about the wiki or forum rules?

Then I have no idea what I'm supposed to do here. When I came to ask about getting my permissions back, I was asked outright if I had anything to say 'before we continue', which I used as an opportunity to try and explain WHY I reacted the way I did, citing the blunt manner of the notifiers and the rudeness of the messages I'd received as giving me a bad impression of their purpose, in the hope that someone might at least be willing to see what happened from my perspective and agree that, if nothing else, the messages I received could MAYBE have been handled better by the people who sent them, and that was all.

I was even clear in both my first AND second responses that I am aware there was no justification for my rudeness, nor was I trying to find one. I was simply trying to establish some kind of middle-ground on the matter, that while I was in the wrong my actions could at least be seen in a fairer light considering the bluntness and hostility of the notifiers and messages I'd received in the past. If I just came in and said 'Fine I'm sorry permissions now?', nobody would believe a word of it, and quite rightly. I was asked if I had anything to say, so I took the opportunity to give my side of the story on the matter.

But everything I said was completely disregarded, nobody thought to advise me on what I should do if I actually DO feel threatened or hurt by another member's private message, and to make it worse I was accused of 'lashing out' at people in cases where it didn't actually happen, outright making up things I never did. If what I had to say wasn't important, why was I asked if I had anything to say in the first place?

I don't consider myself an aggressive person. Even here, I've gone out of my way to be as civil about this as I can be. I haven't spam-posted begging to be given my permissions back, I haven't gone hounding moderators in private messages, I haven't taken to Reddit to complain about how unfair things are... I've made my points and waited patiently for responses, day after day, in the hope that someone might be willing to at least consider what I've said. When all the mods were busy at once, I was willing to wait patiently and quietly for my turn to be spoken to. Even in those posts themselves, I didn't DEMAND anybody do anything, I only asked if anyone was willing to see this from my perspective before things were discussed any further. (Please note, this is not a 'look how good I've been' display, this is a 'this is who I actually am' statement.)

But if that's not the case, and nobody is willing to hear me out, then I genuinely have no idea what I'm supposed to do. If I just say 'I'm sorry', nobody's going to believe it, but if I try and actually explain myself, nobody's going to believe it either. So what am I supposed to do here? It feels like it's lose-lose, whatever I pick.

Very well. I understand now. I should have and should STILL take the discussion to the discussion page, directly to the troper who I am engaging in an Edit War in private messages, take it to the proper forums, or to Ask The Tropers for others to weigh in.

"If you think an edit war may be about to start, use the various communication systems we provide to talk it out. These include:

  • The article's Discussion page. If you use this, please leave an edit reason saying so, because most people won't think to look there first.
  • A private message to the troper with whom you are having the disagreement. Needless to say, this works best if there's only one other person involved.
  • Ask The Tropers. This is a public venue for general wiki questions. It's better still if you send a PM or leave an edit reason asking the other troper(s) to come there with you.
  • The forums, such as Trope Talk (for trope disagreements) or Wiki Talk (for other articles). Some tropes and work pages also have dedicated cleanup threads in Short- or Long-Term Projects.
  • If someone is repeatedly vandalizing an article or is not responding to your attempts to engage them, use the "Report Page" button in the sidebar to send a message directly to the staff, or post in Ask The Tropers."

For the record: When you initially asked "How can you avoid an edit war in the future if you disagree with someone's change to your entry and want to revert it? Edit reasons, as noted, do not count as discussion." — This sounded like a rhetorical question. I did not know you were actually asking me for an answer.

I understand now.

where is the appropriate forum to bring those up civilly? (I generally don't hang around on the forums, I just edit pages)

It depends on the issue, but not this thread. Some are Ask The Tropers concerns, others are Wiki Talk concerns, and still others go elsewhere. Now back to the topic...

I did not index pages, point taken, apologies.

This is despite a previous suspension for the same issue. Suspensions are supposed to emphasize the rules, so we don't really like seeing someone in here for the same mistake multiple times. Why did this become a problem again?

To be clear, you are suspended not only from the TLP, but also the forums and private messages, because you were rude in response to people trying to correct your behavior.

This wiki is a collaborative process. Yes, that includes your drafts, and yes, there is a nonzero chance someone else will take over them. If your privileges in the above areas are restored, we will expect you to play nice with other tropers going forward and tone down your combative wording ("have some common sense"? Really?). Do you understand this?

I apologize for not indexing pages and I would like my editing rights restored and again will do my best to index pages.
