Manhwa and Manhua example sorting in trope lists. (What media category/folder/subpage should they go under?)

Go To

Manhwa and Manhua have inconsistent placement in trope lists due to it not really being formalized/stated on Media Categories.

It's been brought up here, and part of the General Media Category discussion thread here. Some have chosen to put examples from Manhwa and Manhua in the "Anime & Manga" folder, some have chosen to put them in the Comic Books folder, while others choose to give them their own folder. There is no consistency on this site at all.

To give some examples:

On a related note, the way Complete Monster is sorted lumps both Manhua and Manhwa examples into the "Anime & Manga" subpage.

What should we do about this?

  • Give them their own separate media categories/folders/subpages
  • Lump them into "Anime & Manga" media category/folder/subpage
  • Lump them into the Comic Books or Webcomics media category/folder/subpage in accordance to their medium
  • Lump them into an "Eastern Comics" or "Eastern Comic Books" media category/folder/subpage

EDIT: Ok, so it seems we will also discuss the namespaces Manhua/ and Manhwa/ as well and whether on it not we need them or if we should just merge them into Comic Book/ and Webcomic/. But to keep this thread on focus, the namespace talk will be discussed here

EDIT 2: The thread decided that Manhwa/ and Manhua/ are worth keeping as namespaces after all.

No, we don't classify adaptations above their original versions. If we're troping the adaptation specifically that's one thing, but a Manhwa/ example shouldn't go into Anime and Manga just because an anime adaptation happened at some point.

[up] Oh, ok. Well, in that case, I'd just say we disallow putting any Manhwa/Manhua examples into the "Anime & Manga" folder/subpage entirely.

Again, it makes no sense to lump examples from Korean and Chinese comics into a folder/subpage explicitly about Japanese comics and cartoons.

Especially because we agreed to the consensus that the two are distinct enough to apparently deserve their own namespaces.

"any"

Again, if an example is from an adaptation, it needs to go to the adapation's medium.

Anyway, I'm fine with Manhua folder and Manhwa folder, mainly because it's likely what we'll agree on anyway.

My point is that if it's from the adaptation it should ideally have a separate page for said adaptation, not just be a Manhwa / Manhua example for a different medium. That's assuming the adaptation is different enough to warrant being troped separately in the first place.

That's interesting, because in Light Novel thread we've used "when not sure if it's how it happened originally, use the folder of the medium you're watching" principle, and also the reason many works have medium redirects.

[up] I'm agreeing with Amonimus here. There is a possibility of a troper watching the Solo Leveling anime first and writing a trope example thinking to just place it in the "Anime & Manga" folder.

I mean... yeah, but in that case they'd be writing an example for the anime. I'm literally only saying that if the only existing medium for a page is Manhua or Manhwa then it doesn't make sense to use an example under that namespace in a different folder while claiming it's for an adaptation. You guys may be misunderstanding me since we seem to be referring to different scenarios. That's part of why alternate medium redirects exist; so that people can use them when they're referring to that specific adaptation of the work (though I still think a page would be preferable if the adaptation is worth troping in the first place, regardless of which one came first)

(double-checks) Correct, there were two points and I was responding to the one you weren't making because they got mixed up.

[up][up] Ah ok, thanks for elaborating, I just got confused a bit.

But I agree that if the sole medium is Manhwa or Manhua, then it makes sense to just put a trope example in a Manhwa or Manhua folder.

Yeah, give them their own folder. Sticking them in A&M is just wrong, sticking them in comic books will probably just confuse people since the namespaces are remaining distinct.

[up] Doing this, we'd have to move the Manhwa and Manhua examples in Monster.Anime And Manga to Monster.Other Media

If there's not enough examples to fill out an entire page, could also just give them a section in other media. Still, if the consensus does become 'move them to their own section', I don't think it's going to be impossible to ask one of the engineers to make that change. [lol]

Alright, so the options we have are:

  • Place examples from Manhwa into a Manhwa folder and place examples from Manhua into a Manhua folder.
  • Place examples from Manhwa and Manhua into the Comic Books folder.
  • Place examples from Manhwa and Manhua into the Anime & Manga folder.

[up] Same with me, but I've just a few disagreements from a tropers thinking they should be lumped into the A&M folder, so I'd still go with a crowner sometime later/tomorrow.

Inclined to go with the first choice, and possibly the inclusion of the variants in those folders (eg Korean Webtoons, Hanguk Manhwa Aenimeisyeon under the Manhwa folder)

If Manhwa media folder is made, should Korean Webtoons and Hanguk Manhwa Aenimeisyeon examples be moved to it, would be a separate question, but sounds natural to me.

Is there a reason that animation should be dumped into the same folder? One that isn't 'anime and manga are already doing that', since that doesn't make it a good choice.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure why Manhwa lists Hanguk Manhwa Aenimeisyeon as a "genre of Korean manhwa".

Proposed crowner description:

There is inconsistency on the Wiki as to which folders/subpages examples from Manhwa and Manhua should be placed in trope lists.

What folder should examples from Manhwa and Manhua go in?

Proposed Crowner options:

  • Place examples from Manhwa and Manhua into their own folders (Examples from Manhwa go into a separate "Manhwa" folder while examples from Manhua go into a separate "Manhua" folder)
  • Place examples from Manhwa and Manhua into the Comic Books folder.
  • Place examples from Manhwa and Manhua into the Anime & Manga folder.
  • Place examples from Manhwa and Manhua into a new "Eastern Comics" folder.
