Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

What is the work?

Ministry of Fear is an actual-play of an improvised Call of Cthulhu scenario created and recorded by Ain't Slayed Nobody as part of their "Push the Roll" series. In 1970s Britain, the employees of Fathom Films — American producer Kirby Sullivan, sociopathic script-writer Riz Holmes, down-on-his-luck actor Adrian Trumble, and tea-boy and aspiring filmmaker Ben Christie — are contracted by the British government to make public information films warning people of the dangers of everyday life.

However, as seemingly innocuous accidents and incidents spark deadly chain reactions, it transpires that the new Minister in charge of the Central Office of Information is a person (or rather, entity) less interested in warning the public of dangers and more keen on creating a climate of paranoia and abject terror — the gorier and more destructive the spectacle, the better.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

The Minister is an eldritch entity summoned by Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath to help him stay in power, taking on the form of a taciturn woman with grey hair and an impassive scowl — only smiling when witnessing others suffering. However, the Minister effectively usurps control of the government and has ordered the Central Office of Information to work on producing films that instil terror and dread into the populace of Britain by any means necessary.

When Ben Christie attempts to startle a man by throwing a carriage clock out a window, the Minister influences probability to cause a chain reaction that results in the man being hit by a cab and a woman being mortally wounded when broken glass from a large storefront window falls on her. When Ben tampers with the scaffolding at a nearby construction site intending to scare the workers, the Minister causes the scaffolding to collapse — killing some of them and badly wounding others. She then sends her liaison, Cecil Delrimple, to inform the employees of Fathom Films that she's pleased with their work and wants them to go bigger — even offering them unrestricted access to military ordinance — while psychically manipulating and gaslighting Ben into coming up with the idea of driving a double-decker bus through a crowded park.

The Minister has a bus' driver killed and the bus positioned to be driven through the park, then orders Ben to tamper with the wheels; causing the bus to veer into the crowd and fall on its side — running over, crushing, and otherwise killing and/or maiming dozens of people in gruesome manners. This includes all of the Fathom Films employees except for Riz, who has also been gaslighting Ben into committing acts of chaos and destruction: Adrian — who was driving the bus — is flung through the windshield and decapitated, still conscious and mentally narrating his own death as his severed head flies through the air; and Kirby is impaled up the bum on a camera tripod. Pleased, the Minister finally appears before Ben and Riz, and informs them the Central Office of Information wants to move the making of public information films (read: committing acts of mass-murder and domestic terrorism) in-house and that a position has opened up in her office to do more work of the kind they just performed, but that only one of them can get the job — handing them a shard of broken glass with the intent of having them fight to the death.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

None in the episodes themselves. The Minister is an enigma and all we really find out about her is that her employee Cecil Delrimple is utterly terrified of her, telling the Fathom Films crew that it's not a good thing that they attracted her attention and that he prays they never meet her in person.

However, while the episodes leave the Minister's motivations for wanting to cause as much chaos, death, and destruction as inhumanly possible an unanswered mystery, Word of God on the group's Discord channel is that the Minister is an entity that feeds on fear, and wants to incite as much chaos, panic, terror, and paranoia as possible in order to give herself an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Are they bad enough?

She's usurped control of the British government and fully endorses acts of mass-murder and domestic terrorism, with plans to use either Ben or Riz — whoever wins the fight — to commit similar or worse atrocities in the future. I'd say so.

Final verdict?

My vote would be a [tup] were it not for the Word of God statement that she's an Emotion Eater who feeds on fear. However, that's not made apparent in the episodes themselves, and I feel that in trying to instil a climate of paranoia and terror across all of Britain she goes beyond what would be required for her survival — considering she seems to be getting by just fine on the fear engendered by the earlier public information films made by Fathom Films and other studios — and clearly enjoys watching the chaos, death, and destruction unfold.

Alright after having a chat with MGD, here's another possible contender from Father Brown. From the season 5 episode "The Eagle and the Daw" and the season 6 episode, "The Jackdaw's Revenge". Meet Katherine Corven. Thanks MGD for giving the EP a polishing as well bud.

Who is Katherine Corven and what has she done?

A cold calculating sociopath with a particular skill for manipulation, first appearing in "The Eagle and the Daw", sometime before the events of the episode Katherine poisoned her husband Bertie to induce a heart attack, however, Father Brown was able to prove she murdered him.

Awaiting execution, Katherine devises a plan for revenge whilst also blackmailing her prison guard Frances Whittaker (by holding the fact she knows she's having an affair with a fellow guard) forcing her to smuggle letters out of the prison, and also give her whatever she wants. Delighting in abusing poor Frances.

Everything set she asks to speak to Brown to confess. When she and Brown talk, she confesses that she intends to murder her lover Raymond Worrall, knowing Brown wouldn't repeat it due to it being a confession to a priest. After Brown visits Raymond, Raymond turns up dead which ends up with Brown being arrested. Eventually it's revealed that Katherine manipulated Raymond to kill himself, convincing him she only killed Bertie so she could be with him and by dying they could be together in the afterlife, and to implicate Brown for the crime so he'd be executed for it.

In her second appearance in "The Jackdaws Revenge", Katherine is released by the police when another woman, their elderly former clearer Vivian Hope, claims that she was responsible for Katherine's husband's death. Pretending to be a mere unfortunate victim of the justice system, Katherine joins a convent of nuns.

She likewise has managed to seduce Frances's ex-husband Robin Gladwell, the head of the Kembleford Post. Now free she has Robin murder Frances and make it appear a suicide out of guilt for playing a part in Katherine's false imprisonment. While Brown knows it's Katherine, she has an alibi to keep her safe.

Throughout the episode, Katherine launches a campaign of psychological warfare, first tricking him into believing she kidnapped Mrs Mc Carthy to discredit him further and then leaks a story to the ambitious journalist Eddie that Father Brown framed her for murder cause rejected his "amorous advances," making the Nice Guy man of the cloth go through one of the few times he's ever shown to be angry.

Having Gladwell kidnap Brown's friend Bunty, Katherine tells him her life held to be cut short unless Brown admits the story is true and resigns from the Clergy. In reality she has no intention to let Bunty go, but has dropped enough clues she knows Father Brown will eventually find them.

Katherine's final gambit against Brown is a notably nasty one. Arriving at the abandoned warehouse she’s using as her base, Katherine mockingly congratulates him, and Eddie for being such a good useless idiot. She then reveals her final "test" giving Father Brown and seemingly showing Katherine holding Bunty at gunpoint from the shadows. She then gives him thirty seconds to forces Brown to try to shoot Katherine to save Bunty, either damning him for the murder or having to let his friend die. When in reality she switched their clothes and the "Katherine" was Bunty tied up while Katherine was faking being tied to the chair.

It ends with Eddie trying to shoot "Katherine" when Brown tries to stop her, ending up with the real Katherine being shot. Dying, Katherine says about how she bribed and threatened Vivian by having another inmate target her grandkids. Brown offers Katherine a chance to repent before her death in which Katherine refuses, citing "without people like me, what is the point of you?" before expiring for good.

Freudian Excuse or Mitigating Factors?

I'll keep it short... no on either accord. Katherine's a clear as day sociopath with no care for anyone but herself. Its made clear she doesn't care for any of her lovers, there just pawns for her to use. Father Brown does admit remorse that he couldn’t save her soul, but Mrs Mc Carthy flat out states that not a priest on earth could have saved a soul so black as hers.

Heinous Standard?

The series has a very lax standard wise bar the guys that Eruptor and MGD plan to get through. 3 deaths normally I wouldn't think pass baseline but forcing a man into suicide to frame someone for his death and since this is Britain when the death penalty is still a thing is pretty fucked by the series' standards.

Her gambit in her second appearance of playing mind games with Brown to make him seem unhinged and forcing him to ruin himself else his friend dies and then pulling off one final scheme to make Brown kill said friend while she appears as the victim of Brown's mania?

Add on threatening a woman's grandkids if she doesn't take the fall for one of her crimes so she could enact petty revenge on Brown for getting her arrested for a murder she committed, we've got one of the low-key vilest types of killers from the show.

Final Verdict?

What say we?

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, you entertain me. To show my appreciation, I will help you awaken from your world of clichés.

Since the Netflix adaptation of the Korean webcomic Bloodhounds is becoming popular, I decided to put my two cents on the main antagonist of the drama, Myung-gil Kim.

What is the Work?

Bloodhounds is a Netflix adaptation of the webcomic with the same name. During the peak of the COVID-19 Pandemic in South Korea, Geon-woo, a promising boxer, is struggling financially with his mother. Unknown to him, his mother would get private loans from an evil company named Smile Capital, and when she failed to return the money given to them, Smile Capital would destroy her entire cafe and injure Geon-woo by slashing his cheek. Geon-woo, motivated by seeing her mother suffer, joins his best friend Woo-jin to owe the former's debts. However, they would stumble upon a more dangerous foe than they might have realized.

Who is He?

Myung-gil is a corporate executive of Smile Capital, a private loan company that provides money to the vulnerable, should they return it. If not, he will send a loan shark and ruin the lives of innocent who were duped in the process.

He might look like a simple loan shark who preys upon the weak and abuse their vulnerability to gain even more money, but as we see in later episodes, he is more than that.

His Actions in the Show

When Myung-gil first meets Min-Beom, a Iil Group Enterprise Executive, over the halted construction of a hotel building due to Coronavirus, he proposes to build the casino on the roof of the hotel to resolve the issue. When Min-Beom initially refuses, Myung-gil ambushes Min-Beom in Car Wash and forces him to strip himself as a source of blackmail to prevent Min-Beom from disagreeing with his plan, basically turning an executive of Iil Group Enterprise into his lackey.

Myung-gil is also involved in scam operations where three men he hired will go to an area where homeless people steal their ID cards to create even more debt.

His past doesn't make his action any better. His greed is displayed when Myong-Gil and his loyal henchman In-Beom decide to rob their boss Tae-ho's vault. When Tae-ho finds out that his money is being stolen, Myong-Gil attempts to murder him by stabbing him with a knife multiple times. When it seems like Myong-Gil is about to lose to Tae-ho in a fight, Im-Beom throws Tae-ho outside his office, paralyzing him. Soon, Myong-Gil burns down the office and escapes with the money to expand his business.

In Episode 6, Yang-Joong, Tae-ho's henchman, reveals his motivation for building the casino. He states that when the casino has finished construction, it will be crowded with drug and gambling addicts vulnerable to moneylending. From there, Myong-Gil will strip more money from the unwitting and continue the cycle by buying more prominent buildings and repeating the whole step.

When Myong-Gil realizes that Tae-ho is trying to thwart his evil plan, he arms himself to the teeth and sends his henchmen to murder Du-Yong, another Tae-ho's henchman, in his house. Although happening offscreen, Myong-Gil murders Tae-ho and his pregnant wife (indicated by his nodding when fighting Yang-Joong) and kills Yang-Joong and, ultimately, Tae-ho. Myong-gil later burns down Tae-ho's house with injured Woo-jin inside the home left to die, showing his complete disregard for human life.

In episode 8, when Geon-woo and Woo-jin decide to expose Smile Capital's crimes, Myong-gil finds out who was involved in the scheme and hires a hitman to murder those involved. It ranged from a hitman kidnapping the cafe owner and poisoning the coffee, stabbing one while showering, and even running another over with a truck.

Myong-gil then captures In-mook, a personal driver of Tae-oh, and attempts to murder him in front of his granddaughter and even threatens to kill him immediately should they call the cops. If it weren't for his granddaughter's marksman skill as an archer, he would've killed him in cold blood.

Any Redeeming Qualities?

No. The flashback seemed like it would flesh out Myong-Gil as a more sympathetic villain, but all that hope vanished when he attempted to murder Tae-ho for money out of his selfish ambition.

Myong-gil has not shown any visible remorse when he's in charge of loan sharking through his company Smile Capital and witnessing how many people suffer because of his actions. Some scenes show he enjoys taking other people's money and expanding his empire.

Add his willingness to murder anybody who foils his plan, and you got yourself an irredeemable scum of the Earth.

Heinousness?

Preying upon the vulnerable for his selfish ambition, murders, and even disposing of the body by melting them and dumping them into the water, it becomes clear he is very much so.

Conclusion?

Of course, but I'll let you decide.

Not honestly sure about Myung-gil, he sounds really nasty but I'm concerned if he really does enough for a powerful crime boss. Reading through it sounds like he engages in general loan shark tactics and blackmail, and tries to kill everyone who attempts to expose him (succeeding about seven times).

What's the overall standard like? Does he have any competition?

jkim152 Since: Oct, 2021
#17361: Jun 13th 2023 at 4:56:24 AM

[up][up] It was stated that Myung-gil has a hard drive in his vault that has over 50 blackmail videos and "sees people's weakness as a source of income," as stated by his bodyguard. Also, based on Myung-gil's conversation with his bodyguard confession, he murdered countless people and disposed of their bodies by disintegrating them.

[up] He indeed does have a competition. He knows Tae-oh is still alive and wants to steal his vault full of money (again) to finish the construction of his dream Casino. That's why he stormed Tae-oh's house, killed him, and burned his house down and leaving Woo-jin to die. From there, he will go with his money-laundering scheme using his new Casino to expand his empire, as mentioned previously. Also, he is in a big battle with the Executive of Iil Group Enterprise over a consensus on how the hotel should be built. Cue the blackmail and do whatever he can with his resources to turn the Iil Group Enterprise into his lap dog, as shown in the scene where Myung-gil's henchman forces him to strip naked and use that as a bargaining chip.

Still, they are either reluctant workers (the people who snatch from people without homes is a prime example) and don't engage in killings (The one who stabbed Woo-jin did it out of self-defense). There's also a dirty cop working for Myung-gil who snitches out on information to him, but he's just a corrupt cop acting as an informant.

Does she ever have any sort of sadism like say, IT or Nyarly?
She smiles when watching the chaos, death, and destruction her machinations unleash, and psychically pushes Ben to commit even greater atrocities by gaslighting him into believing it's for the good of the people and will strengthen Britain.

We normally are supposed to not care if it's not in the work at all. Same with why your not supposed to add deleted scences or stuff to a main page unless theirs an edition which has it

Tbh she Doesn't sound any different to like any other bad guy who feeds off stuff like that and is a total sadist. So I don't have an issue either way.

I'd be tempted to effortpost Riz as well, since she turns out to be a delightful sociopath who gaslights Ben just as much as the Minister does and is very much on-board with what the Minister is doing when she finds out, but there's a moment where she expresses concern for Adrian after a roofing tile cracks him on the head during the construction site collapse that I feel disqualifies her.
