Misused: Flagship Franchise

Note: This thread was proposed by ~magnumtropus, who gave others permission to make the thread.

As discussed in this thread, Flagship Franchise seems to be suffering from a lot of problems:

  1. On the main trope page, many of the shows aren't even franchises, but rather "Shows which so-and-so studio/network/channel is best known for".
  2. There are also many ZCE's. Examples simply state that "xyz" show is this for "abc" company, without elaborating on specifics, such as "How long has it been a Flagship?", "What works in other mediums has it inspired?", and "How many installments does it have?"
  3. While not brought up in the thread, there may some overlap between this trope and Cash-Cow Franchise if the example elaborates on how the Franchise makes money for the owners. The "Flagship" part of the trope means "most well known", but "Franchise" already implies that the Flagship is a Cash Cow to a certain extent.

Find the Flagship Franchise Wick Check here. A main-page-entry analysis has also been carried out.

Wick Check Results:

52 Wicks were counted. 18 came from entries and 34 came from potholes.
  • 12/18 entries (or two thirds) were zero or partial context.
  • 3/18 entries fit better under a different trope
  • 2/18 entries were invoked, and in both cases, they were an unelaborated list of franchises
  • 2/18 entries are valid, and explain how the works in question (Warrior Cats and Game of Thrones) are both flagships and franchises for Erin Hunter and HBO respectively.
  • The wick check showed that the potholes were used more appropriately, with only 6/34 failing to refer to a specific piece of media. However, I'm not familiar enough with some of the works to be sure that all of them can be called franchises - some of them might just be very popular series instead.

The second part of this Wick Check will be an analysis on main page entries, since a lot of misuse has accumulated there, as mentioned at the start of the EP.

Proposal:

  • Flagship Franchise should be merged with Cash-Cow Franchise, to refer to a major Franchise that makes a lot of money. The examples under that trope appear to be better in terms of content.
  • A new trope (preferably called Signature Series) should be created to refer to "The most well known series associated with a channel/producer".
  • If the above two options fail to come to fruition, guidelines should also be set in place to discourage ZCE's. Entries need to provide hard data to prove that a Flagship / Cash Cow Franchise is actually a Franchise, and not just a Signature Series.

Hm, doesn't look like the page went through. ~magnumtropus

Anyway, merging with Cash-Cow Franchise and Yarding Signature Series sounds good.

I think Tropes Are Flexible should apply to the latter two options. Does it matter if a Flagship Franchise is a single series as opposed to a larger franchise? Conversely, would multi-work franchises be disqualified from Signature Series? But then the check page classifies Disney+ calling The Mandalorian (not Star Wars as a whole) its FF as "valid", so maybe I'm misinterpreting what's meant by that.

On the other hand, the description makes it sound like the trope is supposed to be about the work that a creator or studio puts the bulk of their creative energy and input into. That may not be distinguishable from Cash-Cow Franchise in practice though, especially for studios.

Ideally, for a show to be called a Franchise, it should have expanded beyond the OG show, whether through spinoffs, merch, and the like

As for the Mandalorian, Signature Series does seem more apropos, but then it is a spinoff to a franchise that was already a Cash Cow to begin with. Adding to that, Mando got a spinoff, and Baby Yoda toys are really popular.

I'm just wondering how important being a franchise is to the trope, as opposed to just being part of the name.

Any more thoughts on what to do here? So far, only 3 people (excluding myself) have given input, i.e, they agree with the Merge and Yard

And is there anything else that needs to be done?

[up] Since it hasn't been three days, and the thread surprizingly lacks input, it would likely get a crowner tomorrow.

There was also a suggestion to create a new Signature Series trope to catch potential Flagship Franchise misuse. Will that be on a later crowner?

We don't typically crowner new trope ideas since anyone can draft them in the TLP.
