The description has been rewritten; now we need to clean up misuse.

    Original OP
According to the second paragraph of the description, Furry Confusion is about cases where anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic versions of the same species co-exist. However, it's frequently misused to apply to any works where anthros and non-anthros co-exist, even if they're different species. It also has a lot of overlap with Carnivore Confusion, so there's some redundant examples. I did a wick check and found that only 34% of the examples were correct.

El Squibbonator made the excellent suggestion that this trope should only apply when anthro and non-anthro versions of the same species co-exist without explanation, meaning that (for example) the mundane animals and talking Animals in Land of Oz wouldn't count because there's an in-universe distinction. (Though we could make a separate trope for examples like that.) I think we should rewrite the description to match this, and then do a cleanup to remove all the misuse.

[up][up] Thanks for adding the banner on the trope page.

Anyone want to help me draft a rewritten description? It's early in the morning here, but I'm thinking about keeping the first two paragraphs the same, followed by something along the lines of: "There's no internal consistency about this; examples where one species is consistently anthropomorphic and another species isn't are not this trope, nor are works where there's an in-universe distinction between anthros and normal animals. The audience are left scratching their heads about how this world works."

You're gonna need more consensus before making any changes. I agree that they're needed, I'm just saying that these things take time.

[up][up][up]Per the Three-Day Rule, we need to wait until the thread has been open for at least three days before calling consensus, or if there isn't already enough consensus, hooking a crowner to gauge it. (Waiving the Three-Day Rule is only done for Not Thriving threads, since those pages take mere seconds to close once they're starred, compared to the three days most threads have to be open before consensus can be called or a crowner can be hooked.)

Oh. Okay. I just thought there should be more discussion than agreements/disagreements.

Do we have consensus to rewrite, or is a crowner needed?

I hooked a crowner because I'm not sure if we have enough consensus, and I figured a crowner wouldn't hurt.

Calling in favor of rewriting as mentioned here. We'll need to sandbox the description and then clean up wicks that don't comply with it.

Also, we could rewrite the laconic. At the moment, it's quite vague:

Anthropomorphic animals and real-life animals appearing together gets weird.

But we could change it to something like:

Anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic members of the same species co-exist in a work with no explanation.

We could do that. We could possibly draft a new Laconic when drafting the main description.

Here's my idea for a rewrite...

In many cartoon or comic settings one will often find that the characters are anthropomorphic animals. The audience tends to accept this without question. Even if there are non-anthropomorphic animals in the setting as well, they're usually different species than the main characters.

Things get unquestionably weird when non-humanlike specimens of the same species of animals the main characters are based upon are shown existing in the setting alongside them. There's no acknowledgement of this outside of possibly a quick gag.

In some works, anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic animals are considered distinct categories in-universe; that is not this trope.

I have a suggestion! We could do an example sectionectomy for Furry Confusion:

  • Entries regarding the co-existence of anthro and non-anthro animals of the same species could be kept in the FC page.
  • A new page for inconsistent anthro rules (e.g. an anthropomorphic ant and a non-anthro dog co-existing).
  • Everything regarding food and similar cases could be merged with Carnivore Confusion.
Constructive criticism will be appreciated.

A casual reminder that Realistic Species, Cartoony Species has recently expanded to include non-humans, so watch out for overlaps.

^^ That's not what example sectionectomy means, but your second bullet is what we've agreed to redefine Furry Confusion as, though I agree with your last bullet.

Any improvements I could make to my proposed rewrite?

Trope Repair Shop: Furry Confusion

Crown Description:

It has been suggested that this trope be rewritten as mentioned in this post, and should only apply when anthro and non-anthro versions of the same species co-exist without explanation, meaning that (for example) the mundane animals and talking Animals in Land Of Oz wouldn't count because there's an in-universe distinction. Should it be rewritten that way?
