Some tropes just lend themselves to misuse and there is nothing you can do about it other than periodic cleanup. Understatement is another one.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanYeah, that's why at this point I just favor a cleanup thread.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessTo help that, a few days ago when I had some free time at hands I compiled Sandbox.Mondegreen, a list of wicks with edit links.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanCommon Knowledge does sound like it would be a good fit for some out-of-universe examples, with others going under an expanded Memetic Mutation. Obviously we'll have to wait a while before seeing what happens with Memetic Mutation, but I doubt the crowner ratio for allowing fandom in-jokes will change much between now and when it's time to call that thread's crowner.
As for renaming, I'm still against it because I'm 100% sure we didn't invent the term. I don't think TV Tropes even existed when I first heard about the term and its origin from Wikipedia.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I also support a cleanup thread, whose mission just got a lot easier thanks to that sandbox, so thank you very much Septimus! Would it be long-term or short-term?
Also, I'm against a rename as well. Mondegreen isn't a title we came up with ourselves, plus it would make Lady Mondegreen an Orphaned Reference, and ultimately I'm not sure if any replacement name we could come up with would get the IUEO point across anymore than Mondegreen does.
Lady Mondegreen isn't an Orphaned Reference, because it came from the same trope namer, which did in fact use the phrase "Lady Mondegreen."
Also realized that Beam Me Up, Scotty! could cover a lot of the misuse as well.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Echoing others, I think a cleanup thread is the way to go. I don't support a rename for reasons already mentioned.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"Since there's only one option that seems to have any actual support, should we fire up a single prop? Or should we just make a cleanup thread and close out?
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI’m down for just making a thread and closing - should it be long-term or short-term?
Probably short-term, but with a potential move to long-term if it becomes necessary.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI can't speak for my colleagues, but I'd like to see an active thread not just a thread before closing this.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMaking the thread now - standby for a link
Edit: Thread started

Well, the thread isn't like super mega active or anything, but we've been trying.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessLooks like the upcoming edition of Trope Report is highlighting the cleanup thread. Are we good to close?
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportThere's really nothing else to be done here, so I'd say we're good to go
Well, I'd like to see some activity on that thread. I am concerned that otherwise folks will use the existence of inactive projects as an excuse to call unfinished work finished. There are ancient tasks that were swept under the carpet in this manner.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWe've been trying to make progress, or at least those of us who've posted on the thread are. There's only so much a few people can do.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessHas the cleanup made enough progress to close this now? We finished the YMMV/ wicks today, which is the source of most of the misuse.

Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessLet's hope that it doesn't die again. Closing this, thus.

But the description says in big bold letters that the quotes page is the only place you put the Real Life examples, and it's unlikely anybody's gonna use the quotes page over the description to justify how they use the trope. The problem is more off-page usage than anything.
