As discussed over at the Soft Split thread, Constellations is soft-split four ways, because constellations aren't really tropeworthy on their own. I was going to split the tropeworthy things Like Fictional Constellations, Constellation Motif, etc into their own tropes, and I've started a TLP for Fictional Constellations, but now I figure that's a big enough change I should run it through here

Edit: assuming I need a wick check to open this Constellations has 121 wicks, so I just... checked all of them

  • Most of them fall under Fictional Constellations or Constellations as a Motif, which I was also planning to launch
  • Some of them are just "constellations exist" or the word being potholed where it's mentioned, neither of which are tropeworthy.

This feels like enough evidence for me, but I've never really done this before

^^You ought to show us the wick check as well, otherwise it’s a “taking your word for it” sitch.

“Constellations as motif” could be merged with Cosmic Motifs.

Disambig the page between Fictional Constellations and Cosmic Motifs.

I also wouldn't mind expanding That Cloud Looks Like... to also cover characters making up their own constellations from the stars.

I can totally see Gag Constellation as its own trope as well; the mysticism of the stars not taken seriously.

Sorry I missed this being open. I agree with the disambig and that's what I was hoping for when I made this/ TLPed Fictional Constellations

Yeah, I say to disambiguate and call it a day.

May as well disambiguate. I think Fictional Constellations and Gag Constellations have too much overlap for the latter to need its own page.

I'll make a single prop to see if we have enough consensus.

It's unanimous. Time to make the disambig.

But first, should we move the image to the Useful Note page?

Might as well, unless anyone has a replacement suggestion.

Have all the examples on-page been processed already?

Only 110 wicks to sort.

I moved one constellation-as-gag to Fictional Constellations. The rest of the folder contents are miscellaneous jokes that don't belong anywhere.

Making the disambig now. Moved the image over; going to put the on-page examples in a sandbox for sorting.

The wicks are almost all cleaned out. All that's left are the ambiguity index (still not sure what that's about, so I'm leaving it for now), the laconic (which is still showing up despite cutting the on-page link) and four sandboxes (I'm not sure how those should be addressed).

Took care of the laconic. Ambiguity Index is a place to list disambiguation pages.

[up][up] Sandbox.Soft Split Cleanup is just acting as a summary of things that the cleanup thread is/has worked on. I'll probably move the reference to the completed projects folder once the rest is finished. (Looks to be mostly done!) Not sure if we'll keep those references long-term, but for now it's a quick reference for what the project has been up to.

[up] It's been moved to Completed already. [tup]

Edit: Two of the sandboxes (re: Cuphead's Hilda Berg) are done; not sure on the last one on a user's sandbox for Pantheon. I'll just message the sandbox's owner.

So, I've sorted through the examples on the old page and I think there's enough material to start some pretty solid drafts for a "constellations as locations" trope (i.e., fiction tending to treat constellations as actual astronomical locations instead of casual 2-d groupings of stars that only "exist" from one specific point of view) and "people turning into constellations" trope. I've got them both sorted in word documents right now, and I think the people turning into constellations one is in better shape at the moment, so unless others have different ideas I could probably just take it to the launch pad here and now.
