Misused: Genre Killer

Nobody owns a genre. For this reason, I think it is inappropriate to apply the same absolute threshold as to Franchise Killer and Creator Killer, so we should allow Genre Relaunches as well as unsuccessful revival attempts.

I agree, I just added the option in case others didn't.

I'm fine with allowing historical examples (i.e., genres that underwent a Genre Relaunch) on Genre-Killer.

I recall a crowner option for allowing historical examples in a previous TRS thread; I think it was the one for Base-Breaking Character, but I'm not positive.

A user raised a long-standing concern of theirs that Deader Than Disco could be Too Rare to Trope. Considering the small number of potential genres and the complex nature of many genres' downfalls, could the same be true for Genre-Killer?

I'm not sure. The biggest issue with Deader Than Disco seems to be that the criteria is so absurdly specific it's nigh-unobtainable, because very few works fit the exact pattern. I'm not sure it's the same issue with this one, where the issue is more that genres are so abstract, varied, and broad that claiming a specific genre has "died" is very difficult to prove, let alone for the genre to never resurface.

I was that user. I've wondered about Genre-Killer being too rare to trope myself-very rarely does a work actually kill off a genre because of its failure, it's always more complex. Should we cut Genre-Killer? What does everyone think?

I'm opposed to cutting either trope. There seems to be support for a 10-year wait period for Genre-Killer and allowing examples later saved by a Genre Relaunch. For Deader Than Disco, I believe it should just be defined as "very popular, then widely hated", which would include stuff like Twilight. As a last resort, Deader Than Disco could be made In-Universe Examples Only rather than cut.

Let's not derail this too much. Deader Than Disco needs it's own thread. ^note FWIW, Twilight was hated at the exact same time it was popular, and lately has undergone a fandom resurgence. It's not DTD by any stretch, even if we redefine it.

Alright the crowner which did not get hooked (which I accidentally made an Image Pickin' crowner, sorry) appears to be on its way to showing consensus for a 10-year wait period and for allowing Genre Relaunch examples. Still waiting for it to be hooked though.

Holler again. Should we add a "Cut or merge Genre-Killer as Too Rare to Trope" option as well?

We should also try to establish criteria for a genre. I suggested that it would be easier to explain what a genre is not; the Genres page could benefit from this as well.

I think the crowner is reaching consensus. It appears, based on the results, that we are not cutting this trope, but we will add a 10-year time limit to it. It also appears that we are allowing Genre Relaunch examples here.

With that in mind, should we close the crowner?

Alright, I added the trope to the index and deleted at least the most obvious examples. I did not, however, delete anything from the wrestling folder, as I know so little about pro wrestling that I do not know when certain wrestlers/events even happened. I also did not clean the wicks yet, which I have bolded so that I can get help with doing that.

If there are any more recent examples on the trope, I encourage others to help remove them.

Bumping. Besides recent example wick cleaning is there anything left to do here?

Probably revise the description to explain what a genre is. I made a few suggestions eaerlier in this thread, such as bulllets on what a genre is not. Genres could use some of these bullet points as well.
