Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

[up][up]Yes that was what I meant by it going to excess.

Perhaps we can say that it’s not having an agenda that’s bad in itself; it’s trying to push that agenda through without regard for ROCEJ, rules or consensus.

Someone suggested me to go here if I wanted a faster reply from mod. So the example I deleted (for misuse) from the YMMV page of Only Lovers Left Alive was brought back for no reason by this troper named Wavebird OS. So I deleted it back. That was their lastest edit from last month. Can you check if Wavebird OS is inactive or one of you guys did banned them before? And I'm not sure if it's the first time they done this.

Could we not have the moderators pass their subjective sense of humor as the defining one on this wiki or only one that's acceptable? As seen here (based on this ATT report). "Funny" and "dumb" are not mutually exclusive, despite beliefs to the contrary, and I did think that was a pretty decent meta joke on their part.

That's not why the user in question was suspended. Also, that "joke" violates our rules about example writing. This isn't subjective. We have style rules and they must be obeyed.

If someone wants to practice their stand-up routine, they can do it in front of their cat.

It wasn't a joke, though. Or at least not written like one. It's more like a weird "motivational" statement like the one that used to be on You Are Not Alone, except more suited for the Real Life joke pages rather than an actual trope page. (I actually suggested adding it to that subpage back when it was brought up on the RL thread.)

You do have a point that the delivery didn't really make it a joke. And I do know it's not the reason that person was blocked. I would just appreciate fewer generalised subjective statements like "That's not funny, it's dumb" in the future.

I generally dislike when mods open up an explanation of why a user was suspended with a condescending character judgment instead of, well, just explaining the rules of the site and how they were broken. I know it's tempting, especially when a user appears to be acting in bad faith, but sometimes it feels counterproductive, like it's just gonna make the user feel shitty and thus get more defensive and combative.

That said, the user in question is seemingly getting pissy about not being able to push this joke through (and it is a joke since they complained about other users not having a sense of humor), so I don't think "That's not funny, it's dumb" is too over the line here.

It was just a Real Life folder on Single-Attempt Game that said "Make the most of it". Hence why I thought it would make more sense on Real Life rather than the actual trope page.

That's hardly a socially inappropriate joke. I've seen plenty of that kind of humour on the site over the years, too.

I guess you could make a case that we should not add joke examples, only real examples, and that the example had to be cut because it was not a trope applicable to real life.

I agree that Fighteer was a little too snarky on this one, especially since the ban wasn't about the joke in the first place. It just distracts from the actual problem being moderated.

FWIW, I do think "So having a sense of humor is off-limits on this site now?" is a very bad way to appeal an edit ban. I can't blame Fighteer or anyone else for assuming it wasn't meant in good faith and responding accordingly.

FWIW when I saw that reaction on EB I had the exact same thought, that this was someone who, when confronted about crossing a line, reacts by claiming it was "all a joke" (i.e. the rallying cry of many a bully and troll).

I can accept that "Life is a Single-Attempt Game" (which is basically what the "example" said) was intended as a joke. And the joke itself was not socially inappropriate or offensive.

What is inappropriate is making that joke by, in effect, vandalizing the wiki.

[up][up][up] But the problem isn't the joke... it's the edit war. I wouldn't have found it socially unacceptable or the work of someone crying victim, even if it is a bit corny. Edit warring was what got them banned, not the joke itself.

Or I could get [nja]'d by Red and Gnome, that's fine too.

Personally I think the funniest joke in all this is the idea that Fighteer only passive-aggressively swipes at people he wants to ban, rather than everyone within reach. tongue

I do feel like there is a time and a place for bluntness and straightforwardness, and a time for level-headed but thorough explanations.

When I was suspended for a rogue launch in '19, I feel like Fighteer elaborated on the reasoning behind my suspension in such a way that I understood why not to make that mistake since.

I notice that a lot of people who receive thorough explanations for what mistakes they need to correct tend to at least not make those particular mistakes again.

I realize that in my case, I at least suspected the reason why I was suspended after reading the rules during my suspension, but even so, I believe that Poor Communication Kills.

I think it's worth noting that the user started their "appeal" with "

"So, I take is having a sense of humor is off limits on this site now? That's the impression I get."

When they start off like that, I can't blame Fighteer for saying "It wasn't funny"
