I started to add some disambiguation text to Unfamiliar Ceiling, Waking Up Elsewhere, and You Wake Up in a Room. But the more I thought about it, the more I wasn't sure whether there was actually any difference between these tropes at all.

Each trope, summarized, is about a character awakening in unfamiliar surroundings after losing consciousness for an unknown amount of time, possibly involving a physical injury, and having to piece together how they came to be there. The first two even share the same page quote from The Lord of the Rings.

Is there a distinction that needs to be explained more clearly, or do we have a duplicate or triplicate trope?

We've got You Wake Up in a Room under discussion though, apparently...

Which is new to the tropes under discussion...

Because I've seen at least one character wake up outside...

The fact that these two are still standing as separate pages, despite the fact that whatever differences might have been intended between the two have been blurred into nothing is a bit of a mess. I do think You Wake Up in a Room is distinct from the other two though, or is at least meant to be.

Haha. Normally I would demand a wick check but this duplication is so prevalent (extending to quotes/images) and the issue keeps coming up so I say go ahead and merge Unfamiliar Ceiling and Waking Up Elsewhere.

You Wake Up in a Room is distinct, meant to evoke a sense of mystery and beginning. The other two are about getting KO’d or similar and waking up in recovery.

^ That's definitely my take on the situation. I hadn't gone to check that You Wake Up in a Room was being used properly yet though.

[up][up] - Which name to keep? I say Elsewhere because Ceiling implies Room because Ceiling.

Definitely keep Waking Up Elsewhere, it's the one being referred to as the "supertrope" on Unfamiliar Ceiling anyway.

No action, except maybe a sentence or two pointing to what distinguishes it from Waking Up Elsewhere.

Unfamiliar Ceiling should describe the distinct POV shot used for awakening characters. Waking Up Elsewhere is the wider trope of characters coming to in an unknown environment with questions which may or may not involve the mentioned POV camera work. You Wake Up in a Room is when the character(s) wake up alone and the audience is also in the dark and both solve the mystery together.

[up]I like the idea of retooling Unfamiliar Ceiling to be about the shot.

You Wake Up in a Room is a beginning trope that sets up the premise of the work. The other two are falling action, mid-story tropes.

I'm fine with that differentiation.

I agree that retooling Unfamiliar Ceiling to be about the shot is a good idea, but I think it would need a new name since the ceiling does not need to be unfamiliar for that kind of shot.

[up] - Feels too non-specific... ... I was planning some "Recovery Reveal" Alliteration... But it seems "Post-recovery" is the best. There was "Recovered", but too awkward?

"Post-Recovery Ceiling Reveal"?

"Post-Recovery Reveal: Ceiling"?

"Post-Recovery Recon Reveals Ceiling"?

Crown Description:

There is too much overlap between Unfamiliar Ceiling, Waking Up Elsewhere, and You Wake Up In A Room.

Not all options are mutually exclusive, but some are.
