Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
Made a crowner.
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiI think it would be all right to mention Harsh Word Impact as a potential origin for the convention, but it shouldn't be a requirement.

Attached crowner and shut off the clock.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI don't know if only mods can call crowners, but this one looks clear enough that we can move on.
I put a new description up at Sandbox.Hyperspace Mallet.
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiModerators are the only ones who can close crowners.
Either way, it's been three days, and the crowner is conclusive, so calling in favor of the redefinition.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportThen the description needs a rewrite. Here's a first draft, which is mainly the current description with references to anger removed:
It comes from nowhere, it strikes without mercy, and it disappears again. It's a mallet the size of a circus sledgehammer, and it's evidence that anime characters watch too many Bugs Bunny cartoons or The Three Stooges shorts. A character can often whip out a massive hammer with which to slam the target upside the head. Hilarity Ensues.
Ironically, this is now a Dead Horse Trope in the West, where it originated; modern Western examples are typically from shows invoking anime, which has added its own touches to the mix, or from homages to Warner Brothers cartoons.
For characters that use hammers for purposes other than comedy, see Drop The Hammer.

I'm back!I'm just waiting for a couple of s.
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiAdd in "Harsh Word Impact is a similar concept, where amusing injuries occur as a metaphor for the words being said." to the last sentence and you'll have my .
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Is it related though? It doesn't have much to do except for the fact they're both slapstick tropes.
I'd like to apologize for all this.Slapstick with "weapons" that aren't in realspace.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I'm fine with the sandbox, but I agree with adding a reference to Harsh Word Impact for when the hammer is purely metaphorical rather than being a real object.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Harsh Word Impact is unrelated to the new definition.
I don't know what that means.
Metaphorical hammers would still go on this page, since they would naturally come from nowhere. (And whether any particular hammer is metaphorical or literal is usually a completely subjective judgement.)
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiHarsh Word Impact is absolutely related to metaphorical hammers.
From the description:
A metaphorical hammer, as opposed someone actually being hit with a hammer, could be used for a Harsh Word Impact example since the object doesn't have to be an arrow, though I suppose it's possible that there could be cases of metaphorical Hyperspace Mallet examples that don't also fit Harsh Word Impact.
As for metaphorical vs. literal being subjective, it's not subjective whether the target is physically harmed vs. yelled at.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. Please re-read Sandbox.Hyperspace Mallet. The part about the hammer being a metaphor was dropped from the definition by the crowner. Unless the work suggests otherwise, we're assuming these are real, physical weapons being pulled from nowhere to squish someone flat like an accordion. Think Looney Tunes.
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiCan the description be swapped out now?
I'm back!Fair enough. The timestamp says it was past 1 AM when I posted my previous post, so I admit that I didn't quite think things through.
I don't have any objections, so I think it would be fine to move it over. It helps that the sandboxed description is a bit shorter.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.New description is up.
There's a bunch of examples that are just "hammerspace + hammer" that didn't fit the old definition either. I think people might still misuse the trope like that. Should we rename it?
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiThe metaphorical hammer is no longer a requirement, but we're not removing those examples, simply broadening the trope. So I do think that Harsh Word Impact is relevant to wick to somewhere.
"It's just a show; I should really just relax"I have a question.
Are there any metaphorical examples? Anything that vaguely fit the old definition could just as easily be explained as being a literal hammer operating under the tropes of Hammerspace, Amusing Injuries, and Rule of Funny. The trope is misused, but every example other than the ones with the lowest amount of context suggests that the hammer is physical and "real" within the context of the narrative.
That entire paragraph about the metaphorical hammers was bizarre. My only explanation for it is that it was a misplaced WMG entry, and I'd like to go forward pretending that it never existed.
So yeah, do we need to rename the trope or should an image change be enough?
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiHarsh Word Impact could just as easily be explained as being a literal arrow operating under the tropes of Hammerspace, Amusing Injuries, and Rule of Funny, with an example taken from Ouran High School Host Club: In episode 2, when Toru admits he feels selfish, studying abroad in the hopes that he'll be the kind of man to impress his fiancee Kanako, Haruhi chimes in with "Yeah... you're right, that is pretty selfish of you," and a big red arrow stabs Toru in the chest.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Alright, I added the link. Let's just move on.
So the trope is being used for "hammers + hammerspace", which isn't correct under either the old or new definition. Do we need to do something to prevent this misuse in the future, or is a cleanup enough?
We should at least change the image to something other than a hammer.
my brain is a computer with 4k of ram. this is a jokes wikiWe could discuss image related stuff in Image Pickin'.
The new definition looks good so far.

for "Hammerspace as slapstick".
