Wick Check Project

Alright, so if I've finished the check and have taken a look at the resulting data, where exactly do I go with this next?

You just kinda hang onto it. Maybe discuss it somewhere like Trope Talk if you're not ready to make a TRS thread.

So, uh, last night I removed Bee Afraid since the thread had been opened, but ~Unicorndance put it back. Can someone else remove it? I don't want to get into the world's most pointless edit war on a sandbox of all things.

Yeah, they messed with my sandbox count too, I fixed both issues at once

Oh. I didn't do that on purpose. I was meaning to add my Alluring Anglerfish wick check, and I don't remember putting Bee Afraid back or doing anything with it?!

Did you have the window open for a while? You might've caused an unintentional Edit Stomp. I was wondering if that's what it was.

I think I did leave it open, since I was getting ready to add the link when I was done.

Alright, cool. Mystery solved.

Memetic Mutation Wick Check IS DONE. Now I just need some help counting things up. I'm stuck on if the examples in the "multiple wicks different categories" folder should only count once per color, or if each example should be counted separately.

I know, preaching water while drinking wine, but I think on pages with multiple wicks each wick should be counted separately. Most pages are written by more than one person and the point of a wick check is how people use it.

I guess that's fair.

Though if that's true, I could've ended this wick check like, weeks ago.

Unless you're like me and count them as separate wicks in the tally but instead of reducing the number remaining to be checked, just keep raising the total. :)

To be fair, this was over 140 wicks; I was pretty burned out by then. I'm not sure raising the number would've done much more than make me feel more exhausted.

Alright, I'll do it Sep's way and just count every example separately then tally up the full total at the end. It's 141 wicks, but the amount of examples will be much bigger and the percentages will be a little higher than they otherwise would be.

OK, so I'd like to do a wick check for Big-Lipped Alligator Moment, but it's probably got a bazillion wicks, so I could use some help. Only trouble is, I don't know how to work together on a wick check with other people.

You don't really have to "do" anything different besides post it to the sandbox and post less wicks. Basically, instead of doing it all at once, do like 5 wicks or something when you feel like it, and then take a break, let others take a look and do their own wicks at their leisure, and finish it at your own pace.

By the by, BLAM needs about 80 wicks. 79 if you don't want to round up :P

Hey look I found another one!

Common Crossover is specifically about fans making crossover content between two (or more) specific works, and all the on-page examples reflect that, but it isn't YMMV. Also this feels like it should have more wicks? There's only 52.

Might want to take that question about intended usage to Trope Talk...

They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character check is done.

I'm not questioning the usage. The description literally (albeit abstractly) says it's for fan crossovers.

But you are questioning whether the trope should be YMMV, which is out of scope for this thread.

This thread is for collaborating on Wick Checks - Systematic sampling of a trope's wicks to categorize the ways in which is currently used.

Oh okay, now I get you. I was just bringing it up since Spiritual Successor and Mondegreen that were also brought up in this thread first before anything was done.

Are you looking for the general TRS thread? I don't think those tropes were ever tackled here, as this is a fairly new thread.

Uh, this actually is the correct place to bring up issues like that, because it justifies doing a wick check for them. Relax, Sailsman.

Updates:

• Added 10 wicks to Big-Lipped Alligator Moment
• 8 to Moral Dissonance
• 14 to Stylistic Suck (which only needs another 14 wicks to complete if anyone's interested)
• Finished up You Gotta Have Blue Hair

Thanks for the Moral Dissonance wicks! I've been a bit busy so I haven't been able to get to that. I will return eventually, but thanks for the help!
