So we are about to cut this trope with 1,600 wicks without having a wick check first? Anything goes these days.

[up]I'm on the same page. I downvoted the index idea due the lack of a wick check.

A wick check is used to prove that a trope is misused. The issue here isn't misuse, it's that the "trope" is just People Sit on Chairs. I'm not sure what a wick check would demonstrate.

If you feel like the page could be tropeworthy, please share your reasoning and it could be added to the crowner.

Also, we're not discussing cutting the page, we're thinking of renaming it and/or turning it into an index.

[up]It would be looking for wicks that don't fit the subtropes, mainly. Like these examples from the page, which all seem like examples of "gratuitous spinning as rule of cool":

  • How about all of the anime series that contain a Transformation Trinket with a spinning element? For example, the wands used in the second season ('sharp') of Ojamajo Doremi feature a spinning musical note in the middle.
  • The Flash:
    • There's also a Flash villain named The Top who gets his super speed by spinning. Also he can brainwash people, by spinning.
  • Marvel villain Whirlwind has this as his theme. He's a mutant who can spin really fast to deflect attacks and move quickly, and not only can he spin his arms really fast to generate whirlwinds, but he also has wrist mounted sawblades. This includes several subtropes, but "spinning as a theme" seems distinct enough to be a separate entry from them
  • In Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D., the saucer-shaped Dalek spacecraft has two rows of windows that spin in opposite directions, which was a fairly cool effect for 1966.
  • Star Trek (2009): Spock's Jellyfish is so far the only Star Trek vehicle to feature a permanently spinning part of its external body: whenever the ship's flying, its tail components spin in opposite directions.

Edit: the last two are probably When Things Spin, Science Happens .

Spinning = cool is definitely a potential trope, as I've said before.

The burden of proof for an action always rests on the people asking for one, not on the other side. "The page is fine" is the null hypothesis which needs to be refuted, not the alternative hypothesis.

Edit: I retracted the original first paragraph to this post. (I don't think it was very well thought-out. Same with my previous post.)

Went ahead and added the Rule of Cool subtrope idea to the crowner, since there's already a crowner up. I'm pretty sure the rename option isn't mutually exclusive with either of the other two options.

Now that I've thought about it a bit more (I'll admit that I didn't sleep well, and that's probably making thinking harder), maybe the Rule of Cool subtrope idea could work, and the Spindex idea could be TLPed as a separate page. Not sure if TLPing Spindex separately from this page should be a crowner option in this thread, though. (I still think dropping the "Everything's Better with..." snowclone would be a good idea, regardless of the outcome.)

Maybe saving TLP ideas for later would be a good idea, since tying them to this thread might end up keeping it open longer than it needs to be open to finish everything else. The threads for Cardboard Boxes and Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped have ongoing TLP components, and those are presumably why those threads are still open (I didn't participate in the former thread, so I'm not positive on that one).

From my own experience I know that doing a wick check is good at revealing hidden patterns. So if there is an accusation of People Sit on Chairs, it would be worthwhile to see if there is anything salvageable in what those 50 examples represent.

It seems like most of the tropes of the index involve both spinning and Rule of Cool, just in more specific ways, so a trope about that would be a supertrope to all of them. And is isn't that just what Everything's Better with Spinning is now?

[up]I've slept since my previous post (I added the Rule of Cool subtrope option while tired, though I don't regret adding it even after being less tired), but at the time I was assuming that Everything's Better with Spinning was primarily a Garnishing the Story trope, because Garnishing the Story used to be called Everything's Better With Indexes and "Everything's Better with..." tends to imply Garnishing the Story instead of Rule of Cool.

As I previously said, renaming and using as a Rule of Cool subtrope shouldn't be mutually exclusive, so a new name could move away from the snowclone and emphasize the Rule of Cool aspect.

If anything, the Rule of Cool subtrope option could mainly mean cleaning up examples that don't fit that if there are any and/or moving examples to subtropes (hence why I added the "clean up misuse" part of the option), as well as tweaking the description to say it's a Rule of Cool subtrope, regardless of whether a rename happens.

I don't think Spindex works if this is a Rule of Cool subtrope. What about Cool And Spinteresting Spinning?

My point though is that all the tropes on Everything's Better with Spinning involve Rule of Cool spinning in some way, so they would all be subtropes of the new trope. So going with that option would entail keeping Everything's Better with Spinning the same, +/- a rename and rewrite.

If it matters, I checked the page type screen a bit ago and the page is already set to index the subtropes. Due to that, having both a spinning index and a spinning supertrope might be redundant.

Clock's shut off, since there's a crowner in progress.

So far, making into a subtrope for Rule of Cool is leading.

Well, we can still create the Spindex page and has the repurposed trope as one of the listed tropes.

Not sure if a 7 to 2 ratio in favor of renaming is enough, but I previously mentioned that the rename option shouldn't be mutually exclusive with the other two options (which are mutually exclusive with each other; currently, the Rule of Cool subtrope option is unanimous with 11 votes in favor) if the crowner gets called soon.

Edit: To clarify, my comments on mutual exclusivity were regarding how the crowner options are for what to do with this page. I wasn't ruling out having the index launched as a separate page.

I actually think the name Everything's Better with Spinning is a pretty intuitive name for a Rule of Cool + Spinning trope, though I wouldn't oppose a rename.

"Use the trope as a Rule of Cool subtrope involving spinning, clean up misuse, and clarify the description (if necessary)." is unanimously in favor with 15 yeas, and the option to rename has a positive ratio with 9 yeas and 4 nays. The former sounds safe to call in favor of, but I'm not sure about the latter.

Edit: One rename vote was changed, so it's now at 10 yeas and 3 nays.
