So Bad It's Horrible Cleanup

Go To

So Bad, It's Horrible is one of the more flame-bait-y parts of the site, so a cleanup thread is needed to ensure that works aren't added simply because someone doesn't like them.

If you want to list a work under this, keep the following in mind:

  • The work must have very few fans or defenders (both genuine and ironic). It should fail to appeal to any type of audience.
  • Being offensive in its subject matter isn't enough.
  • It isn't horrible just because a certain critic disliked it, though their reviews can be used as sources and citations.
  • The work should have notably poor reviews (e.g., less than 3/10 on IMDb, or single digit scores on Rotten Tomatoes)
  • For a Moral Substitute to qualify, it cannot even appeal to its target demographic.
  • Please be polite while writing and as much as possible, avoid falling into Complaining About Shows You Don't Like. Instead, focus on explaining why the work is horrible.

So Jaws: The Revenge is listed and uh since this and SBIG can't overlap. I don't think it's an example of so bad it's horrible.

The fact is the film is considered way too stupidly made that its considered hilarious.

Chris Stuckman made fun of it, Den of geek ass well even Siskil and Ebert thought it was hilarious..

The reception it received offsite sounds like a case for removing it from SBIH and leaving it under SBIG.

Edit: Replaced the arrow with a quote since this ended up being a pagetopper.

Like when an article about this on Reddit movies. All the comments were just mocking it and thought it was hilarious.

Like here.

An all time classic of a movie so bad, it's good.

I ADORE that Jake comes back after you literally watch him be devoured by the shark. And then they kill the shark by stabbing it with a boat.

Edit: And the shark fucking ROARS! IT ROARS! No. No more slander of this perfect film.

Let me repeat that. They kill the shark. By stabbing it. With a boat. 10/10. Might watch tonight.

Or

A shark follows a plane across the ocean because it has a grudge. Think about that for a moment. Some script writer had to pitch that to a movie executive...and it got greenlit

Or

I love this movie and I'm only slightly ashamed of it. I always get a kick out of the climax of the movie which feels like it was either written in eight minutes before it was due, or improvised on the spot altogether.

Everyone talks about the roaring shark and yes that's ridiculous. Everyone talks about Michael Cain climbing out of the ocean with his clothes bone dry and yes that's ridiculous. But there are a few other more egregious things nobody ever mentions.

First, they really want to make Ellen Brody the hero of the movie and therefore she gets to deal the final deathblow to the shark. But her presence in the scene is completely incidental and she literally does nothing to kill the shark.

Mike Brody uses Mario Van Peebles' shocker thing to make the shark leap out of the water, and the boat just happens to run into it. They have a shot just before the shark is stabbed to death where Ellen Brody lunges as if she's personally thrusting the bowsprit into the shark. But that's not how boats work. They don't jolt forward in a stabby motion because you sort of lurch your body in the direction you want it to stab.

Next, the inexplicable inclusion of this miniature shot (I have the movie on my DVR always lol). Miniature shots are supposed to be seamless and realistic looking. This one is neither. And the physics are so fucked in it, it's so blatantly obvious that it's a mini boat stabbing a mini shark in some asshole's sink. And they show it to you twice just in case you were sufficiently tricked the first time.

Then of course, the shark does what any shark not containing any combustible material does when it's stabbed to death by a piece of inert wood, it violently explodes. Then to top it off, they completely reuse this shot of the shark from Jaws 1 sinking to the depths, complete with the wire and jagged piece of metal or whatever sticking out of it. They literally steal an entire shot from the original Jaws and pass it off as this shark sinking.

In one final insult, they use the least convincing matte paint sky backdrop I've ever seen. I know it's hard to tell in that still image with the reflections on my TV, but next time you watch it, look at the ripples and tiny waves literally crashing against the wall behind them and have the illusion crumble before you eyes as you see that they're clearly just fucking around in a water tank on the Universal lot.

I love this terrible movie and I'll watch it until I'm dead.

Horrible.Web Games has Nocturnal Letters:

  • Nocturnal Letters is a Newgrounds point-and-click game whose main draw is that the backgrounds are real pictures taken of the author's family's home. Except they were taken with a webcam and so hideously compressed that it's nigh impossible to make anything out. Navigating around the areas is unnecessarily difficult as well, thanks to a confusing navigation system and the aforementioned terrible compression. The puzzles are barely there, and the story can't decide if it's a horror story or a Brother–Sister Incest love story.

Is it okay for me to remove it? It has a 4.19/5 rating on Newgrounds and I saw a positive review of it when I was googling it.

[up]Yeah, 4.19/5 is too high. With a rating like that, I'd not be surprised if the entry was only one troper claiming their opinion was universal.

I think Newgrounds games would pretty much be impossible to list on SBIH, because the site outright deletes content if it gets a low enough score.

Found two more examples of SBIG and SBIH overlap.

First one is easy, it's The Nutshack; although the show itself is considered SBIH, the theme song had become a meme for quite some time and is considered SBIG. This is similar to the crowner decision that "Allow[s] video games to be listed under both if different parts fit different categories", except it's an example of a series pulling this off.

The second is Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, which I couldn't find any discussion on. Is it both again, like the above entry?

I'd like to apologize for all this.

Big Rigs is kind of our go-to example of SBIG and SBIH overlapping but others can discuss it more properly than I can. Video games are in a weirder spot I think. The plot can suck but one can have fun exploiting glitches.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I think The Nutshack is just a SBIH work with a memetic song, but that doesn't mean the work itself would be SBIG.

I do believe that SBIH and SBIG should be mutually exclusive for entire works, but it is perfectly possible for something generally SBIH to have some SBIG moments, where it isn't worth sitting through the whole thing just for those. The sort of clips that end up on Youtube.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

The description of So Bad, It's Good still says that it can overlap with So Bad, It's Horrible.

I got rid of that part.

Also, we already agreed in the Trope Talk thread that different components of a work can fall into separate categories (one example that was given in the Trope Talk thread was a video game having So Bad, It's Good cutscenes and So Bad, It's Horrible gameplay; basically an ironic form of Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game).

The Nutshack can stay. The show is considered unwatchable with the memetic theme song not being enough to disqualify it. Big Rigs is definitely SBIG and should be cut.

[up] I agree with The Nutshack, that's why I said it was "easy". I only brought it up as an example, since it was another type of overlap that we hadn't discussed in the other thread.

[up][up] I don't know... Big Rigs is really funny for like 15 minutes. After that, there's nothing else to even do. There's so little content in the game. The fact that it was sold in stores for full price pushes it towards SBIH to me.

i don't see how you can look at the utter lack of effort put into Big Rigs and not think it's SBIH.

Yeah, even with the silly things you can see and do in the game because of how lazily it was put together, at the end of the day Big Rigs is still such an infamous, barely-functional mess of a game that if we removed it from the page we'd either have people asking us "Why isn't Big Rigs listed on here?" or trying to add it back.

[up][up] The game is usually considered to be the funny type of bad and has too much of an ironic following to count. It being sold in stores is pretty indefensible though.

I will reiterate that I guarantee that people will be asking why Big Rigs is no longer listed on Horrible anymore within a week of pulling it from the page.

Nobody will deny that there is a lot of fun to be had with how broken the game is and to be told that YOU'RE WINNER!, but it's mostly out of Bile Fascination. It's still widely regarded by critics and players as a completely busted game where absolutely none of its advertised features function, and yet the developers still expected it to sell as it was anyway.

[up] We should put a disclaimer like with Sonic 06 that the game has too much of an ironic following to qualify if it is cut.

it doesn't have an ironic following, is the thing. people laugh at the glitches for fifteen minutes and then forget about it at best. that's not the same as having an actual fanbase that appreciates it.

Big Rigs is funny for about 10 minutes, then you realize that it's a terrible, bugged, mess that you spent real life money on.

It's Horrible, being well known and made fun of for being horrible, but still horrible.

Right, people laughing at something doesn't make those people an "ironic fanbase" unless it gets taken further. The Room has an ironic fanbase. Birdemic has an ironic fanbase. Big Rigs doesn't.

Indeed. I'm a legit Sonic 06 fan, but I still recognize it's got tons of problems.

On the other hand, I do enjoy a lot of the gameplay. So it's not ironic on my front. On the third hand, there's no doubt it's funny how the glitches are too.

It's probably better to not assume it's only cause of ironic fans, cause you'd at most be hearing the louder fanbase, not being able to know the full fanbase. It might also be better to even remove that cause it feels like stealth complaining anyway(and more of a silly assumption towards the fanbase, which let's be fair, the Sonic fanbase is all over the place on practically everything, making it more or less a useless sentence in practice).
