Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

[up][up][up] I think the Pokémon website was what actually caused the rule to be made in the first place, in addition to some interviews from the creator of some Batgirl show.

But yeah, we seriously need to revise this rule. Here's the other thread for anyone who doesn't have it followed.

By the way, here's the official trailer for The Rise of Skywalker:

I think we can add that to the main page along with the other trailers and propose some tropes here, like when the empty throne that once belonged to Palpatine is shown as a potential Call-Back. Any thoughts?

There's very little in this trailer that reveals plot elements in an unambiguous way. I'd say it's probably way too speculative to start drawing tropes out of it. The trailer just screams "intentionally not telling us anything meaningful".

[up][up][up]You said it yourself. "As a potential Call-Back". We don't give a damn about "potential" or "might happen".

The trailer can, of course, still be troped as advertising even if it's useless with regards to the content of the work.

I would like to replace the poster currently being shown on the official page for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker with the new one that was released in conjunction with the new trailer unveiled Monday night.

Are we allowed to create work pages as long as we specifically point out what tropes are present in the preview material? That's what happened with The Addams Family (2019), and I'd like to start another work page now that a teaser trailer has been released.

Can someone add a link to the trailer to The Rise of Skywalker, it only has the teaser (someone should also add how ol' Palpy even has a few speaking lines in the trailer and not just his nasty laugh).

[up][up] That page was a trial. The problem with doing it like that (without citing it in the text of every entry) is that people might be inclined to simply remove the header/folder once the work releases.

[up] Did that happen with that page, though? I can't look through the history myself because I would like to see the movie and don't want to be spoiled.

And like, if it comes down to it, we could just put a big "please correct or remove tropes from promotional material that are not in line with the final work" warning on page that go with this format.

Characters.Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 has Gaz's name censored in a spoiler box. I don't any reason to censor his name like this, since doing so basically is stealth speculating that he will die in the finished product since in the original Modern Warfare his namesake also died at the end.

Should the spoiler box on Gaz's name be removed?

If a work is unreleased, everything we put on the page comes from promotional material, which contains only things that the creators thought we would want to know before going in. This means that we shouldn't be hiding things that are shown in the trailers.

Has Garrick actually been referred to as "Gaz" in promotional material? If not, it's speculative and should be removed.

Either way, pre-release is definitely way too early to declare someone a Walking Spoiler.

[up] Nuke the entire example for misuse alone and nuke any mentions of Gaz's name until anyone finds any material explicitly naming Kyle as Gaz. (I couldn't find any!)

The Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers page was recreated. Would it be possible to have its cut WMG page restored as well, or at least have the WMG entries moved to the general Persona WMG page?

Should we change the grandfather list to allow for new entries to be included in it if they had exact release dates but got delayed? Several Ubisoft games were delayed from exact release dates to vague fiscal periods recently.

[up]It isn't explicitly spelled out, but that's what we're already doing. If a work has a valid page before a delay, it can keep it.

Regarding Film. The Rise Of Skywalker, news just broke that the Benioff/Weiss trilogy is no longer happening, so I'd like to request that one of the mods change the sentence regarding that under Series Fauxnale to a more vague comment about confirmed future movies.

Thanks.

Blizzard entertainment just announced Overwatch 2 at Blizzcon yesterday, and people jumped at creating the page. The work will be both its own game separate from Overwatch, but also a direct expansion to Overwatch itself.. It's complicated. The work was NOT given a release date, but it did release a cinematic that moves forward the story already established in Overwatch's canon by showing the events of the Overwatch organization officially reforming.

What should we do with this page? The new characters of Echo and Sojourn were already established in the first game's canon and will be included as updates to that game (as is standard of all heroes).

The new "Push" Player Versus Player game mode and new maps will also be added into the original game.

I could easily add the new heroes to their proper character categories when new information comes forward.

Everything that happens in the "Zero Hour" cinematic is now officially established canon to the franchise, so this isn't a case of "Tropes appearing in promotional materials for an unreleased work."

Some of the pages for Pokémon Sword and Shield (at least the main work page and the YMMV subpage) have been locked, presumably because of leaks that have come up recently, but the Trivia subpage appears to be unlocked. Should it be locked as well, until the release date (November 15)?

Edit: I misunderstood the reason for the lock. I thought it was because of leaks (as with the pages for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017), but that isn't the case.

[up]We only lock pages if they're causing us problems; we don't generally lock subpages en masse. Trivia/ pages are unlikely to give us any real issues.

[up][up] Main page was locked because people weren't citing their examples, YMMV page was locked because of the National Dex controversy.
