Really a Useful Note: All Hallows Eve

Go To

The page is written like a Useful Note. Examples are written as "work X takes place at Halloween". I believe the problem is due to the fact that we managed to single out horror examples into Horror Doesn't Settle for Simple Tuesday and shows into Halloween Episode / Halloween Special, but leaving other types of works unattended.

Question: Do we want to keep All Hallows Eve as a Settings trope for non-horror stand-alone works?

  • If yes, much of the description should be folded away into a Useful Note.
  • If no, this should go directly into the Useful Note namespace and wicks must be removed from workpage example lists.

Didn't we already have a Useful Note for the page?

Thus, voting for making it a setting trope. Anything not covered in the UN can be transferred there.

Move existing examples to other tropes. Cut page. UN already exists, so no need to create it.

If we lack a setting trope, make a new one, so this doesn't share a name with the useful notes page.

That's another option. Maybe make a TLP draft to transplant the examples if we decide that.

What if we expanded Halloween Episode to non-serial works and moved all examples that show sufficient features there?

Cut in favor of using Halloween Episode or Halloween Special for work-related examples and linking to UsefulNotes. All Hallows Eve for the holiday itself.

^^ Yes, Halloween Episode has a section for non-serial works but it's not thriving. There are only two films cross-wicked. Compare this to the ca. 40 films linking to All Hallows Eve. Understandably, users hesitate to use Halloween Episode for non-serial works because of the narrow trope name. How about adding an alias like It Happened On Halloween?

Do we have a trope for non-horror Halloween setting works? That seems like a separate trope.

Look at all that shiny stuff ain't they pretty

[up]Neither Halloween Episode nor Halloween Special is horror-specific.

There's probably a separate discussion to be had if Episodes tropes are eligible for for stand-alone works. E.g., nobody dared to mention films on Vacation Episode while Beach Episode has lots of them.

[up]Tropes Are Flexible, but if there needs to be a discussion, it's probably more a matter for Trope Talk than TRS.

If it matters, the Episodes page's brief description only mentions TV show episodes and book chapters, but Halloween Episode's page contains examples from other types of works.

Let's see if we can get more votes. 6 total doesn't look like enough to call.

Main/ wicks cleaned except for a ghost wick. I posted a notice on the discussion page and turned the page into a redirect to UsefulNotes. All Hallows Eve for now, since a lot of wicks to Main. All Hallows Eve would have been better suited to the former page. Inbounds should be caught by UsefulNotes. All Hallows Eve after this gets cut.

Edit: I put on-page examples on Sandbox. All Hallows Eve until off-page examples are taken care of, so on-page examples can be moved to Halloween Episode or Halloween Special (if applicable). Cutlisted sandbox because it's no longer needed.

Going to post a link to the Main/ page's wicks so we can sort through them and namespace/move as appropriate.

Starting with Fanfic/ wicks:

All Hallows Eve: The story takes place on Halloween. That's the only time the Black-Flame Candle works, after all.
Looks like it's an entire work that takes place on Halloween, but is a crossover fanfic. Not sure what this goes under.
All Hallows Eve: The whole story revolves around the main characters celebrating Halloween which is Ruby's birthday. Keter's spree also takes its stride during Halloween night.
First installment of a serial work. Not sure what to call this.
All Hallows Eve: One of the Districts in East Coast is also named after Halloween holiday.
Is this noteworthy?
All Hallows Eve: Act Three takes place during Halloween, and one chapter is devoted to many random deities doing related activities. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are all in their Halloween Town forms as well.
Not sure.
All Hallows Eve: Yehudah had never heard of Halloween before coming to Hogwarts and finds it completely incomprehensible, especially since nobody can even explain what exactly it's supposed to be celebrating.
Skeletons? No, this holiday would never make sense.
Also not sure.
All Hallows Eve: The time when the power the Celtic gods is at its greatest in the mortal world. It is also the time where the Mist is at its weakest, allowing mortals to see the Hunt. However, their minds will eventually attempt to rationalise it and they will not remember the truth.
Seems to be more of a setting thing than anything else.

Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!

[up]There was previously discussion saying to use Halloween Episode for works taking place on Halloween, even if they're not episodic (Tropes Are Flexible).
