1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Several of the pages that are currently edit-locked are not the ones that should be edit-locked, anyway...

To clarify, any of the pages that were already edit locked like Donald Trump, Autism, Fifty shades literature, heck the edit lock page itself, they can all be bypassed by opening the edit lock page in a new tab.

[up] + [up][up] + [up][up][up] - Do the edits actually work?

I did something like that, pre-update, and the edits just fail.

Just tried it; the edits do NOT go through. Still should alter the Locked Page icon to redirect to Administrivia.Locked Pages so as to avoid further confusion.

~catmuto: The article font has always been Arial (or Helvetica if not on Windows). That hasn't actually changed a bit. Only the font for page titles and a couple other places is different. So you're right, the footnote spacing issue is new.

I have noticed that switching to night vision on my Mac used to change the font to a slightly different form of Helvetica that would change the spacing of the text a bit; that doesn't happen anymore in 1.8.

Got a bug that I've run into a few times today. On the All There in the Script page if you scroll down to video games and see the entry for Shantae and the Pirate's Curse you will see a link followed by a line break that puts the next sentence on the next line. Thing is, when you edit the page you will find no line break in the text.

The avatar gallery still doesn't have a "save changes" button on Chrome. It's not very intuitive.

[up] I second what Locoman said; I'm still having that display options issue on the platforms Windows 7 and Windows 10, and the web browsers Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari Mobile for iOS — every time I log off and then log back in, my display options are automatically reset, regardless of what browser I use and of what platform I use.

Save Draft seems to only save the first paragraph of text in the window. Further, it does not clear the draft after use, but keeps showing it in every new post on all threads.

Apologies if this has already been reported, but it looks like forth level bullet points and beyond are now actually being indented more than third level bullet points:

  • 1
    • 2
      • 3
        • 4
          • 5

Edit: Though it seems on the wiki they'll silently get converted to third level bullets when the Edit Window is opened again. The conversion won't even show in the Edit History.

Forth and above level bullets didn't indent more than third level bullets before the overhaul, the silent conversion occurred before changes were reflected on the page, no additional editing was required.

It feels a bit odd to have YMMV pages like Ron the Death Eater still give other YMMV-esque tropes like Purity Sue the flame-bait icon. It's a page about YMMV examples; those would obviously contain trope names to other YMMV-or-worse tropes.

In which case, why even have Flame Bait tropes like Purity Sue active? Even Draco in Leather Pants was listed as a Flame Bait trope, which was always listed as a YMMV trope.

Literally nothing has changed.
I disagree. While the page still isn't running as well as it did prior to the overhaul, the mods have improved and worked on some of the major issues. At least we don't get logged out anymore by leaving the page, despite having Remember Me active; there is a simple way to by-pass the edit-lock; the design... eh. *shrug*

Draco in Leather Pants is an audience reaction, not flame bait. It can be listed on YMMV subpages. Flame Bait articles are for definitions only.

I think something like this was mentioned before, but when I click from a subforum into a thread with a new post, it seems to anchor/scroll to that new post and then load folders (which I have open by default), pushing the anchored post below where it should be. Maybe even below the window if the folder is large enough. OS X El Capitan, Firefox.
