"Moments" cleanup and maintenance (Awesome, Funny, Heartwarming, Shocking, Tear Jerker)

Go To

See here for Nightmare Fuel, which has frequent enough problems to deserve a thread of its own.

A while ago, I made a thread for cleaning up Nightmare Fuel pages, since they tend to attract all sorts of gushing about anything vaguely unsettling, as well as violations of Example Indentation and the Spoiler Policy among other problems. Well, other Moments pages have similar issues, though to a slightly lesser extent, so they may as well have a cleanup thread too.

"Moments" reactions should:

  • Be free of spoiler tags, in accordance with the Spoilers Off policy which states that:
Fridge, Headscratchers, and the various Moments subpages (Tear Jerker, Moment of Awesome, etc.) are for post-viewing discussions. Spoiler tagging there defeats the purpose of the articles. You shouldn't be going there if you are worried about them.
  • Be based on things that actually have happened, not things that could happen, will happen, or might have happened. Speculation belongs only on the Wild Mass Guessing pages.
  • Have affected the writer of the entry themselves. If you don't find something funny or sad, let someone who did add it to Funny Moments or Tear Jerker.
  • Elicit a strong reaction. Not every single time a character accomplishes something is an Awesome Moment, not every attempt at comedy is a Funny Moment, not every time someone does something nice is a Heartwarming Moment, and not every unhappy event is a Tear Jerker.
  • Explain why they're so awesome/funny/sad: Zero Context Examples aren't allowed on this wiki. Your description should allow anyone to understand your reaction.

If I'm understanding correctly, does it means that something like Ironmouse being an Ill Girl is tropable because it's explicitly a part of her character that's analagous to her IRL self's condition, but Sakamata Chloe being The Pigpen is not because that's an aspect of her IRL self and not her character? Or does the latter fall under emerging narrative?

[up] We do not trope real life, so if it's connected to their avatars, it's probably okay?

However, Ill Girl had a rename per TRS not too long ago to make it clear that it's not just "someone's sick". Is the illness debilitating someone adorable and delicate? If so, Ironmouse would qualify.

I found another Moments page that's mostly troping a creator's life outside their work - TearJerker.Matthew Santoro. There's also potholing to NRLEP tropes like calling Matthew The Woobie on there. The Image Pickin Moments pages suggested we really shouldn't be troping his private life, even videos he makes about it. There's very little that's not just about him talking about his personal life (or totally meta stuff like him leaving You Tube for Twitch) so I might just take it to the Cut List.

Was there a discussion around keeping Awesome.Real Life and similar pages?

I am pretty sure there was but I guess people thought they were harmless as Main.Real Life (should probably be in the JFF/ namespace) is framed as a simulation game. I still don't think we need them though.

I'd honestly rather cut them; quite hard to say "please don't put Real Life examples on moments pages" when such pages exist.

To be fair, the rule isn't about "real life" specifically, but meta. A bunch of real-life commentary and interviews added to a DVD would still be packaged as part of the work, whereas a totally fictional fanfic would be meta since it's external.

  • When Charlie Brown first arrives to direct the play, everyone applauds him, except for someone making a "booooooooooooooooooo" noise. It turns out to be Snoopy, the revelation of which causes Charlie Brown to say, "Man's Best Friend". One wonders why Charlie Brown hasn't committed suicide when even his own dog hates him.
    • To be fair, his dog doesn't hate him, he just seems to antagonize him quite a bit, but still.

Can someone help me make this entry less... un-kosher?

the nightmare fuel section warrior cats feels a little exaggerated. i've never read warrior cats, but i don't think the series is a horror or gorn series like mortal kombat.

It's no horror series, but I assure you that for a kid's series, Warriors actually is incredibly gory and dark. The first book alone features child soldiers and multiple murders.

Anyway, we have a separate thread for Nightmare Fuel.

Here are a few in TearJerker. The Loud House that I'm dubious about.

  • Lily being overwhelmed by her siblings surrounding her and wanting for her to come over to them. While "overwhelmed" is one way of describing it, she didn't seem sad per se, and she's too young to be having any kind of psychological stress.
  • You can't help but also feel sorry for Luna herself during her Heroic BSoD when she gets a musical block. As an amateur writer, writers' block isn't sad.
  • Lincoln's final line in the episode, "This turned out to be the best day ever" is also Grant Palmer's final line as Lincoln. For those who were aware of the impending change, it was a heartbreaking but touching sendoff from the kid whose performance had helped establish Lincoln as a fun and memorable protagonist. IRL example.
  • Clyde seems to take the news that his dads just got another cat rather than another baby well, but still, you can't help but feel sorry for the guy. He was really looking forward to becoming a big brother. Cats are good too, and he wasn't sad.
  • And then Lori says she's not normal, right to her face. Basically implying something is wrong with her and she'll never be like her sisters. Even though she follows it up with something like "you're perfect the way you are", it's still sad that all of her sisters find her weird, even the one who talks in jokes and puns and the one who forgets her own brother's name.note  I'm the one who added that note, a while back, but now I'm questioning the whole thing. This is the girl who uses "normie" as an insult.
  • Lana appears to suffer from chronic nightmares. Over the course of the episode, Lana seeks the comfort of an older sister three times, and it's implied that this is a frequent occurrence. While this could be considered heart warming due to Lana finding comfort with her older sisters, it's sad to see a 6-year-old little girl suffer from what could be a serious condition. note
Lana: Leni, I had a nightmare. Again, I added the note. I think it's too WMG-y thinking that a little girl having nightmares (a normal thing) is a serious condition.
  • Luan's actually hurt-looking reaction to her siblings snapping at her after yet another repetition of her "...get it?" gag. It's quick, but it's the first time we've seen them actually get hostile over her unfunny gags, and her reacting in any way to their lack of appreciation. The look on her face just screams heartbreak. It's just a Lame Pun Reaction.
  • The episode hits especially hard if the viewer has ever experienced pediatric depression. The character in question is a baby, and viewers wouldn't remember being babies. Also, it wasn't depression since she was cheered up with a song.

For every low there is a high.

  • Taking a nod from Mr. Hooper's death, there is a special that dealt with Elmo dealing with the death of his Uncle Jack, from Elmo's father remembering the good times he had with his brother when they were kids to cousin Jesse facing the fact that her father is gone for good. The special, entitled When Families Grieve, part of the Talk, Listen, Connect series for military families — meaning Jack was likely killed in action overseas — was nominated for a primetime Emmy, but lost to the only other nominee, a Nick News special about cancer.
    • Also from the "Talk, Listen, Connect" series, Rosita’s father Ricardo returns home from the military, except now he’s paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Rosita is upset because he can no longer dance or play soccer with her. It becomes horrifying when you take into account that Ricardo was drafted into the army, and was perhaps attacked by enemy soldiers in such a way that he lost the use of both of his legs.
    • The When Families Grieve video features the death of Elmo’s uncle Jack. While it’s never explicitly stated how Jack died, it’s implied he either died in the military or committed suicide, referring to the website’s articles on grief. When Elmo’s family meets up with Rosita and Jack’s surviving family at the park, Elmo’s older cousin Jessie (Jack’s daughter) is having an especially hard time dealing with the loss of her dad. She doesn’t want anyone touching her “special bag” (which contains items that remind her of her dad) and even refuses to talk about him. Fortunately, her uncle Louie (Elmo’s dad) gets her to open up and says it’s okay to be upset, but they can remember all the good times they had with Uncle Jack. Like the aforementioned Ricardo incident, it becomes downright chilling if you visualize those same soldiers who cost Ricardo his legs gunning down Jack in cold blood and deeply affecting his whole family.
      • But wait! It gets even scarier! What if, as a soldier, Jack trusted Louie, Ricardo or any of his fellow soldiers to kill him should he ever lose control? Or even worse, he committed suicide unannounced, either as a self-sacrifice for the good of America, or as a result of manic depressive disorder or dementia? Really puts the normally jolly, playful Jack in a tragic light, doesn't it?

I want to tear this one apart. Can I? Pretty Please?

EDIT: Its from Sesame Street. And its fanfiction nattery nonsense. And its not even supposed to be scary! Its in the Tear Jerker section.

Funny.A Bit Of Fry And Laurie? More like "A Bit of Quotes and no Context"!

No, seriously, there are a lot of out-of-context quotes.

[up][up][up][up] Adding notes arguing against an example's sadness falls under Repair, Don't Respond and is not allowed.

[up][up] Are you talking about the last bullet specifically? That one is indeed very bad and nattery. The indentation on the rest of the example also isn't perfect, but if it's fixed, it could work, though some of it does feel a bit speculative.

Now that that's done, another questionable page I encountered doing cleanup for Corpsing is Funny.Parks And Recreation, specifically the General/Unsorted folder (the rest is fine). That's going to need to be sorted out as there may be meta examples in there.

Edit: Funny. My Way Entertainment needs a look, too, due to out-of-context quotes.
