Discuss TV Tropes itself, such as observations you've made about the site/forum/wiki.
NOTE: Keep it civil; try not to get into any Flame Bait-y territory, per the forum rules (in particular, drama importation and popcorn posting are not allowed, and this thread is for discussion about the site and not the users). In addition, while discussing the Edit Banned thread is not prohibited on its own, discussing and/or alluding to specific cases is not permitted.
One thing I've noticed is that for all how the page for They Might Be Giants claims them to be the unofficial official band of this wiki, there's relatively few people on this site who seem to ever reference them.

This conversation would probably be better suited to Wiki Talk.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I didn't start this intending to change things, I'm just puzzled as to why we have this page at all. If there's discussion to be had we can go there.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.I think the main problem with Knight of Cerebus examples is that users seem to focus more on the motivations of the villain than on how seriously they are treated by the narrative in comparison to the rest of the plot. A villain may want to destroy the world, but if they are mostly comedic, even if by being Comically Serious, then I think they shouldn't fit.

oh hey how are you doing?I once saw Knight of Cerebus used on characters who weren't even antagonists... I'll go and remove it.

Keep misreading Cerebus as Cerberus, and imagining someone fighting alongside a three-headed spotted dog (since Kerberos translates to "spot")
The comic was named after a misspelling of "Cerberus". Today the trope would have likely been called Drift Into Drama.

THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!Ditto:
A part of me wants to post here my opinions about certain things in "Our avatars are posting on a forum thread", but I worry that I might get in trouble for complaining and/or spreading drama. Even if I don't bear any ill will towards the users I talk about. It doesn't help that I'm generally very self-conscious.
Though I must say that, in general, I believe the quality of that thread has vastly improved since I first joined it in September 2022. Starting around December or January, it seems like more people were actually bothering to explain who they're even roleplaying as than they were in September.

New theme music also a boxI've wanted to try posting in that thread again, but I've been at a loss of what character I would want to write. Thought about bringing back a character I've used before, (since I've been comfortable portraying them before) but I can't think of how to bring them back and have it make sense.

Ever wanted to see the most inexplicably horrifying intro to a game ever?I tried RPing in that thread but it moves too fast for me. Plus I'm already in a bunch of other RPs to begin with.
Victor of HGS S320 | "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember."I've had fun in that forum before, even if it was quite a while ago. Mostly played canon characters going through the events of their source work and updating themselves. just made a little list of "arcs" I did in the note of this post.

I, too, try to stick to characters from canon worksnote and I like it when others do too, since you can always just google the character's name if you don't know about them.
If you're going to RP an original character in such a thread, it'd be a good idea to have some kind of online link that explains who your original character is. Which, thankfully, a lot of users now in the thread are trying to do. Big shout-out to MorganFoulke specifically.
I remember earlier when a lot of people would play their OCs but never have any info on who those OCs are anywhere concrete. It didn't help that sometimes the characters (though not necessarily the people playing them) could be quite rude and expect other characters to know who they are.

Why the hell do I keep on recognizing myself in these posts
In that case, I'll stop RPing as my original characters because the Light Novel that I'm writing isn't even published yet, so I have no veritable links to show other users where my characters come from. I deeply apologize if I contributed to the OC confusion.
Edited by VintageEmma on Mar 27th 2023 at 11:22:23 AM
Remember, if you have characters you want to try out and RP with you can always go to one of the Character Adventure threads in Writer's Block. That doesn't rely on knowing who the other characters are since everyone uses their original characters, just plopped out of their story's universe and put into the setting.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI'm actually interested in going into that thread myself. The only issue is that I have to find a way to avoid being cringey as I always do. Main problem is portraying the amount of tragedy that my character has gone through without it coming off as edgy.
Understood, thanks! That said, I really do think that a rule for OCs requiring veritable sources to link so people can be familiar with them should be put up on the Avatar Forum Thread so it's there for everyone to see. The fact that no such rule exists means that anything's free game even if they don't have source works to pull from.

I've just found out that Fetish Retardant is still on the wiki, and has examples. I had this assumption that it was jettisoned along with Fetish Fuel years ago. It's a bit of an orphaned name now, though it still works.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.... A preference for canon characters over OCs is definitely a matter of opinion and should not be enshrined into the thread's rules.
A desire that the OC has a verifiable reference even more so.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.(x6)
VintageEmma, I'd actually prefer you don't, since you're one of those users who has actually been doing very well. You've posted a lot about your setting so much that you basically already have an info sheet.
In fact, one of the major reasons why I created Sandbox.Characters Our Avatars Are Posting In A Forum Thread is so that people who RP as original characters can put all of the relevant info on who their characters are on the sheet. I've noticed that you have made some edits to Our avatars are posting on a forum thread, Emma, which is all very good, but you do have folders on the character sheet.

A desire that the OC has a verifiable reference even more so.
Strongly agreed. I was just listing my personal opinion, not some kind of gold standard that all of the other users must follow.
Actually, VintageEmma, I was curious about what your opinion on my behaviour in that thread is. Like I said, I'm very self-conscious, and sometimes I worry how I come across to others. So if you have anything — constructive criticism, praise, downright hatred — I'm all ears. Because I really hope I don't come across as some kind of myopic fanboy or an arrogant jerk.

Please visit the "AITA" forum gameJust wondering, there's no harm in adding entries for activity in that forum thread for before that work page for it was made, right?
Not that I'm troping my past shenanigans right away, it's just a question I've had before but never bothered to ask until now.
In fact, I probably did think way back when "what if there was a page for this" so I'm rather amused to see it's a thing now lol.

But what is its point? The other messages are about good editing practice, that's where we direct newcomers who don't understand how articles should be written. You Have Been Warned is... warning editors not to spend too long on it? Not to go too deep down the rabbit hole, as they say today?
