Max has his fans, mainly for the Ralts episode and being an Only Sane Man. Twitch isn't exactly a measuring stick for the entire fandom.
The Protomen enhanced my life.where are the fans? I need to see a lot of defenses for him. Personally, I don’t like Max that much but boy can Twitch be so harsh on him.
Here's a fairly even like-dislike ratio with about 600 Pokemon fans polled; it's not huge but it's hard to find fans of Max when search engines think I mean 'max I Vs.' XD
The Protomen enhanced my life.Might want to see his popularity in Japan as well; if he's got a fair number of Japanese fans, that disqualifies him from being The Scrappy even if a lot of Western fans hate him.
Max isn't very popular in Japan either, but I don't think I see much outright hatred to him as the western fanbase has. If you compare him to another little sibling character in the anime, such as Bonnie in XY, who seems almost universally loved in Japan and liked in the west, there's a huge difference.
So I was wondering if any of these examples from YMMV.Fate Grand Order could be put back after Tropers.Chris X unilaterally removed them.
this entry was cut from YMMV.Resident Evil 6, by a troper who's a serial YMMV remover.
- The Scrappy: Many hate the co-op only Ada partner character "Agent" for having essentially no purpose to the plot, among other reasons. Ironic, considering one of the reasons he exists was people complaining about Ada having no partner.
is this a valid example? should it be restored or remain cut?
Migrated to Chloe Jessica!I think Agent is more of a meme that outright hated.
I mean, can you even hate a non-character?
Uni catI've seen Max fans on forums. I'd pin him more as a Base-Breaking Character than an outright Scrappy.
The problem with Max overall is he had less than 6 months worth of story material in an anime that ran 4 years. The writers just didn't know how to utilize him much so he essentially just became a second Brock with the occasional annoying moment, but got a few eps to himself.
You could arguably say Brock became "The Scrappy" in Hoenn and especially DP as well.
From YMMV.Super Smash Bros Ultimate:
- The Scrappy: All 5 of the added Spirits have gotten a rather unenthusiastic reaction when they were added to the Spirit Board. Partner Pikachu and Eevee are hated for being redundant, taking a spirit slot that could've been filled by a new Pokémon from that game (like Meltan) and being frustrating to fight. The Dice Block and River Survival are considered to be Filler, since they have absolutely no relevance to the Mario series as a whole. The Golden Dash Mushroom is probably the only one who isn't completely hated, due to being an iconic item from the Mario Kart series. That said, it's generally agreed to be an unnecessary addition.
I don't know if Spirits would even count as characters, and are the 5 added spirits really hated enough to count since this seems like something minor. Partner Pikachu and Eevee bring up them being frustrating to fight, which is something gameplay related and a better fit under That One Boss.
I would say Spirits do not count as characters.
x2 edit: Ah, wait, I don't think any of those count at all upon looking closer. I'd say remove outright.

Adventurers: homeless people who steal from tombs and kill things.I've honestly never even heard of anybody hating those five particular spirits or thinking they were an unneeded addition in any of the Smash circles I'm in anyway. At most I've just seen indifference, which is a pretty far cry from "general agreement".
"I shall not be foolish again, my dear Gwendolyn!"on Monster School, I found Zombee listed as a Downplayed example. The Scrappy cannot be downplayed, right?
—signature not found—The Scrappy and other Audience Reactions can't be downplayed, so that example should be removed.
Removed it
—signature not found—There's another example on that page that says what is tantamount to "to some".
Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!I'm removing the rest of the Monster School examples since they sound like we're supposed to hate them as villains.

- The Scrappy: Happy Hogan has a much poorer reception in this movie compared to the previous films because he's Took a Level in Jerkass and is unhelpful and condescending to Peter Parker despite supposedly being the latter's caretaker and outright dismisses every single one of Peter's calls without even bothering to ask what he is talking about, especially when Peter tries to warn him of Vulture's involvement, which makes him indirectly responsible for kickstarting most of the movie's plot and makes him come off as The Load, if not The Millstone. Fortunately, he was Rescued from the Scrappy Heap in the sequel with an Author's Saving Throw.
Since Scrappy is about consistently hated characters, is this one work enough to count?
The Scrappy is for consistently hated characters, so one disliked appearance of a character isn't enough to qualify.
Also being less liked does not mean the fandom hates their guts.
I believe there's room there for at least a mention of the fan dislike for Happy, but I concede now that this is the wrong header for that. What sounds better?
I believe that Max from Pokémon should count as a Scrappy. I thought that Iris and Tracey counted, but they are both base breakers with insane hatedoms. If you go on Twitch, you will see people criticize him and you barely see anyone defend him.
