Laconic Description Improvement

Today I found out an interesting fact from troper Ironeye:

Don't ever make the mistake of using the Laconic version as the canonical trope meaning—the laconics are often written by people who don't actually understand the drop. In this case, the laconic only corresponds to one possible cause of Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy.

The Laconic Description for DIAA states as follows:

The thing is, these descriptions are supposed to make it easier to understand what the page is about. If they can't be accurate as well as short and sweet, then there's a problem.

So for starters, what would be a better description for DIAA?

We Used to Be Friends page image got changed because they're supposed to just not be friends anymore, instead of being totally good vs. evil.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=16924594860.73769000#comment-1

But Laconic.Evil Former Friend is:

Best friends turned deadly enemies.

Which might be depicted in We Used to Be Friends's current image, since they have their teeth bared at each other, in a sorta combative stance?

I think the Evil Former Friend needs a new laconic because it doesn't capture what the trope is about and, as you say, is more like an evil version of We Used to Be Friends as a result.

How about?

It's revealed that one of the good guys and one of the villains once had an extremely close platonic relationship until the villain turned to evil.

I'm fine with that. Swapping it in! ... Btw, do we have a trope for when they're romantic instead of platonic?

I'm not sure, and I hesitated about using "platonic" in that suggestion, even after reading the original draft. Although even the draft adds things like Dumbledore and Grindelwald, the original entry focussed on the friendship rather than the romance (I'm not so familiar with the spin-off films as with the original Harry Potter books and films, but my guess is that this original entry would be outdated now as I believe it has since been confirmed they were lovers and not just friends with a bit of unrequited romantic feeling from Dumbledore).

I think Evil Former Friend is a bit ambiguous as to whether it can include romance. It certainly stemmed from the platonic when crafted, but I don't know if that was supposed to be "platonic-only" or "platonic is the draft focus, but romantic examples are in-scope".

Laconic.Heroic Sacrifice doesn't mention the requirement that the self-sacrifice wasn't pre-planned. Can I bring that back (the editor who removed it didn't fully explain why)?

EDIT:[down](x3) Late thank you.

The laconic of Alpha and Beta Wolves is misleading.

Captive wolf packs with Asskicking Leads to Leadership hierarchies.

In real life, Asskicking Leads to Leadership is observable for wolf packs in captivity, but the trope is about wolves portrayed, inaccurately, as behaving such a way in the wild.

What about simply this?

Wolf packs with Asskicking Leads to Leadership hierarchies.

The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.

[up][up][up] Yeah. If it's pre-planned, it's a different trope, so making it clear this trope isn't for pre-planned examples is a good idea.

Can I update the laconic for Moral Myopia? It's been bugging the crap out of me for the longest time because it just sounds like a blatant carbon-copy of Hypocrite.

How's this:

Someone striving toward an ugly, immoral goal, only to get cut short? Eh, close, but no cigar. Someone else using that same goal against its originator, without moving heaven-and-earth to prove that it's the right choice? No fair!

That's a little long for a laconic. Frankly, Moral Myopia might overlap a lot with Hypocrite anyway.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I think they're closely related, but not quite the same. A trope talk might be worth doing because there have been debates about both tropes in the past, and Hypocrite keeps having start-stop attempts to discussing how to fix its problems. It may be worth looking at both together.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Laconic. How A Realist Hero Rebuilt The Kingdom: "The Hero's enemies are playing the Game of Thrones, but he's playing Europa Universalis on God Mode."

This requires understanding of two unrelated works (and are also quite a stretch). Suggestion:

"A summoned student is made the king to fix the country's economy and military."

Laconic.Through A Face Full Of Fur: "Impossible changes of color in characters."

That's way broader than what the trope is about. Suggestion:

"Cartoonish changes of someone's skin to indicate their mood work even when the bare skin isn't visible."

[up]Seems fine to me.

Someone rewrote Laconic.Sad Clown which misses several crucial details; that the character acts happy but is really sad and insecure. While it attempts to use "pain" for the latter, that can be misinterpreted as physical pain when that seem to necessarily be part of it. Can I revert it?

Laconic.Colon Cancer is currently:

  • Titles: with two or more colons: can be really annoying.

Lets just do either

  • Work titles using two or more colons with subtitles; tends to be cumbersome.

or if we want to self-demonstrate:

  • Work Title: Plus Multiple Colons: And Subtitles: Awkward.

Laconic.Nichijou: Completely ordinary life hyper-exaggerated into The Amazing World of Gumball mixed in with Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Nobody would understand what that means, nor I see a strong connection to Gumball or Monty Python.

Suggestion: An allegedly "Ordinary Life" of schoolkids filled with Non Sequitur and artistic humor.

[up][up]Sounds good to me[tup], same with your suggestion at[up](x4). (Thanks for responding to my post by the way.)

Someone added two more sentences to Laconic. The Dog Bites Back which are misleading; the main page states it involves a villain and it's a Death Trope, but those newly added lines suggest otherwise. They also suggest it can apply to a bullied victim and non-lethal revenge, which the main page doesn’t mention. Can I remove them?

EDIT:[down]Thanks.
