Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.
As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Noting that another addition was made without pinging the thread. Come on folks, it's not that hard.
Be careful what you wish for, 'cause you might just get it all...No need to use a plural. Same person every time.
Check out my fanfiction!Andyxdr is not, however, the first person to add multiple entries without a notice, nor are they likely to be the last.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpImplicit: within a reasonable time frame.
Check out my fanfiction!Looked at Magic Realism, and yeah, the one RL example there doesn't even fit the trope anyway; it sounds more like Reality Is Unrealistic.
online since 1993 | huge retrocomputing and TV nerd | lee4hmz.info (under construction) | heapershangout.comMaybe Magic, Maybe Mundane and Magic Realism have both cleared the NRLEP hurdles, but in the interests of making sure they're stable I'm going to wait until I get home from work to call them.
And also because I'm lazy and want to pop Evil Counterpart and Sliding Scale of Villain Effectiveness, which hit the 48hr mark later tonight. (Both of them are also closer to "mixed results" than the two Magic tropes, so I guess this post is also a "last call".)

All your safe space are belong to TrumpLooks like there were no significant changes in any of the current active entries since my last post, so calling:
Impossible in RL:
- Magic Realism: Added 5th Aug '15 at 09:06:17 AM, 9:1 (20)
- Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Added 5th Aug '15 at 09:06:17 AM, 5.33:1 (19)
Villain tropes:
- Evil Counterpart: Added 5th Aug '15 at 07:54:03 PM, 4.33:1 (16)
- Sliding Scale of Villain Effectiveness: Added 5th Aug '15 at 02:57:54 PM, 3:1 (16)
Possibly something new to consider.
Flipping around via the "random trope" button, I came upon Unrealistic Black Hole, which has an RL section.
Given that the very name of the trope says it isn't realistic, should there be an RL section in the first place?

All your safe space are belong to TrumpDepends, there is a reason Reality Is Unrealistic is a thing. If the RL section consists only of Black Holes that are considered usual then the folder can be axed.
And now that I looked at the folder I see that one example is Speculation, and the rest of just aspects of a blackhole. I'd say that its cutworthy but I'd want a second opinion.

I think that can be summed up with, "random stuff about black holes", without much attempt at connecting it to the trope, or theories that are no longer correct, which isn't the trope either.
Check out my fanfiction! On a different note (hence a different post), Kavorka Man.
It requires someone who either is physically unattractive or has an unattractive personality. This falls under both sexuality tropes and gossip, as it's judging how people look or act.
On the plus side, at least there's a good amount of well-written examples, even if there's a few ZCEs, so it's not badly mishandled. Still, gotta wonder why Mae West is there.
Opinions?

Check out my fanfiction! When she tried to keep her career going in the sixties and seventies she very much acted the trope and was seen as such, she was in her seventies at the time.
Oh, right, I forget that old = ugly.
Check out my fanfiction!...not. Bloody Hollywood.
But Unrealistic Black Hole and Kavorka Man can both have RL examples removed. Making judgement calls on physical attractiveness is not what the wiki's about. (Especially since that can vary in as little as ten years.)
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettAdded Unrealistic Black Hole and Kavorka Man to the crowner.
I think Kavorka Man should be only about characters who are considered ugly in-universe, which is done by the author to create a comedic contrast. Thus, no Real Life examples, since real people aren't devices created to enact a narrative.
By the way, it would need a different page image, too.

That goes under Image Pickin'. Create a new thread, and find images that might work. (Conforming to Content Policy and copyright restrictions of course.)
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettYeah, I'll do that as soon as we cut Real Life examples.
What do you guys think about Entitled Bastard and Ungrateful Bastard (listed on The Jerk Index)? Also, was it ever decided what to do with the subjective Real Life subpages?
Entitled Bastard is full of problems aside from not being a good trope for real life examples in the first place. Generic "examples", natter, formatting, etc.
Ungrateful Bastard isn't quite as bad, but that's not saying a whole lot.
Neither should have real life examples. Would fall under Morality Tropes because we don't call real people bastards, but as noted, that's not the only problem.
Check out my fanfiction! On closer review, I'm for nuking the RL subjective things wholesale....
....buuuuuttttt if that doesn't happen, they needs a scrubbin'.

Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettEntitled Bastard and Ungrateful Bastard added to the crowner.
Revealing Cover-Up might be worth a look. Someone had to delete a Scandal Gate example from that page due to the contentious nature of the speculation and I'm wondering if having any real life examples would be too flame bait-y.
^ I don't know. The folder could use a bit of cleaning, but I don't think it's that much of a problem at present.

On another note, Unrealistic Black Hole and Kavorka Man both qualify for NRLEP, but KM is a bit close (3:1 ratio, 16 total) so I'm going to wait until later today, at which point I'll also pop UBH, which is in no real danger of losing qualification between now and then.

All your safe space are belong to Trump
Crown Description:
Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:- Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
- The item have been on the crowne for a minimum of a week
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.
As a general rule, while they're less problematic if they aren't complaining, I think having any real life examples for YMMV pages is not a good idea.
