Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

This complain-y entry was just added under Fan Nickname on Trivia.Pokemon Sword And Shield:

  • Hop gets called "Galarian Hau", "Discount Hau", or "Hau 2: Electric Boogaloo" by those who dislike him for being extremely similar to Hau.

Not only is it complain-y, but it's also inaccurate since while they share some similarities, Hop has significant differences in personality, goals, and in his character arc from Hau. For example, Hop is less easy-going and takes being a trainer more seriously from the get-go than Hau.

I've seen uses on Reddit of all three of these nicknames (plus Hau 2.0), so it IS used by fans. Now, it's probably inaccurate on the part of them rather than the entry (as in, this is judging by appearance and in-story role), but it is undeniably complainy to an extent.

[up][up][up]Even if the nicknames are real, the page is called Fan Nickname, as in nicknames used by fans of whatever or whoever has the nickname(s). There's a reason Detractor Nickname was added to the Permanent Red Link Club. If fans of Hop (as opposed to detractors) use any of those nicknames, then the example needs to be rewritten to account for that.

Oh god, where do I even begin on Houou?

Well, for starters, the Family-Unfriendly Aesop entry is plain misuse, so that can be discarded.

I’m wondering, should there be a list of tropes and items that people tend to use to complain so maybe just to caution those who plan on adding those to a page? There seems to be a lot of reoccurring tropes and items that end up on this post.

GastonRabbit: I thought Fan Nickname was for any nicknames used by fans of the work, not necessarily fans of the character in question.

[up]Even if that's the case, then the example could still be toned down to have less Detractor Nickname-like wording.

[up] Suggestions:

  • Hop gets called "Galarian Hau", "Discount Hau", or "Hau 2: Electric Boogaloo" for his similarities to Hau.
  • Hop gets called "Galarian Hau", "Discount Hau", or "Hau 2: Electric Boogaloo" for being seen as very similar to Hau.

This example on Lying Creator should probably be removed since it's accusing John K. of lying about something in real life, not about his work:

  • To say the least, many of John Kricfalusi's stories about Spumco and his career in animation have been called into question by his animation contemporaries, especially in regards to his views on the history of The Ren & Stimpy Show.

[up][up]Those sound better. I think the second one works better.

[up]Since this site isn't supposed to trope real people (and since Lying Creator is supposed to be about lies about works' content), that sounds like it could easily be removed.

[up][up][up][up][up][up][up][up] I meant a more downplayed version of that. Flame Bait covers things that shouldn't ever be on the main trope pages. I was thinking more the lines of "use these tropes and items, but be careful you don't come across as complaining."

Anyway, does The Simpsons S8 E17: "My Sister, My Sitter" seems a bit too complainy to you guys?

  • The Bad Guy Wins: At the end of the episode, Bart succeeded in turning Lisa into a pariah (or at least temporarily). To some viewers, this also makes his apology to her feel hollow and insincere.

  • Didn't Think This Through: Homer and Marge thought Bart, a known troublemaker who barely ever listens to adults, would just accept his little sister being put in charge of him?

  • Hypocrite: Dr. Hibbert call Lisa to babysit his children, just hours after calling her a bad babysitter in front of the entire town.

  • Idiot Ball: Held by Homer and Marge when they think Bart will be okay with having his younger sister babysit him.

  • Karma Houdini: Homer and Marge come across as Unwitting Instigator of Doom in this episode as hiring Lisa to babysit Bart couldn’t have possibly ended well do to how utterly humiliating it has to be for Bart (and then once they see her on the mud in the mall, knowing perfectly well what kind of kid she is, go along with the condemnation the rest of the town is giving her). Yet they never receive any consequences for their idiotic decision which nearly got their son killed and turns one of their other children into a (temporal) pariah.

  • Too Dumb to Live: Bart's decision to continue screwing with Lisa after getting a huge bump on his head and dislocating his arm is to lock himself in his room and repeatedly bash his head against the door to make the bump bigger. He knocks himself out.

  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Bart is much more malicious than usual in this episode, to rather disturbing levels (being annoying is in line with what he's done before, but then he shows he's perfectly okay with self-harm in order to achieve a victory over Lisa). The fact that Bart acted like a jerk was the reason why this episode was panned when it premiered.

I'll weigh in.

  • The Bad Guy Wins is not a proper example. Bart acted like a brat, but he wasn't really the villain here. Plus, he spent most of the third act unconscious and he admits his actions went too far during the end.
  • The Hypocrite example probably fits Hypocritical Humor better.
  • I think the Karma Houdini example is just complaining. The thing is, Lisa had a good track record as a babysitter beforehand. Now trusting Lisa to be in charge of Bart is a bit an issue, but I can't say they could've foreseen how far things will go.
  • Too Dumb to Live is not an example. The trope is for when people make stupid decisions that get them killed, which clearly didn't happen to Bart.
  • I think Took a Level in Jerkass is for long-term changes in a character, not a single episode like this. At best, this should be moved to Jerkass Ball. The final line should be cut though.
  • Didn't Think This Through and Idiot Ball look fine to me.

I'm not sure sure if this counts as complaining, but I found this on the What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids? page:

Now that Disney owns 20th Century Fox, they are no longer a company aimed at families since they have the rights to ADULT CARTOONS like The Simpsons, Family Guy and Futurama. They are becoming like Warner Bros in the sense that they are both aimed at children and adults.

Again, sorry for wasting your time if this doesn't count as complaining.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I've removed it.

The fact that "ADULT CARTOONS" was in all caps made me wonder if it was complaining.
