Yes, they are pretty much Sister Tropes, Glasses Are Hot/ Glasses Are Sexy doesn't really need to be lumped together in with Nerds Are Sexy.

Well, I already have too many YKTTWs to look after (and which are woefully in need of constructive feedback).

Alright,so other than Meganekko, are there any other glasses tropes that need fixing?

[up] I think megane needs to be an example-less fanspeak page, but that may have to wait for the Sexy Spectacles trope to launch.

So, anyone want to look at and maybe give hats to the YKTTW?

Hey all, I'm coming from the Sexy Spectacles YKTTW page. A few weeks ago I commented on it about not really liking the trope name, but I didn't get any response. I saw it again, so I figured I'd post here rather than try again there.

This might just be my pet peeve, but Sexy Spectacles is a very awkward name. 'Spectacles' is an archaic, clumsy word, and it really clashes linguistically with the more modern 'sexy'. There's no reason for it besides alliteration, and it just doesn't sound good. Stoic Spectacles works. Sexy Spectacles doesn't. You just don't describe a sexy girl as wearing 'spectacles'.

However, it's adequately descriptive, so if it were to launch, it wouldn't be bad enough to warrant a rename. So I'd like to preempt it now because I'd rather not get stuck with it forever. I'd be fine with Glasses Are Hot, Sexy Glasses, something like that.

I'm inclined to agree with the above poster. It's a minor issue, but Sexy Spectacles seems to be a slightly inferior name for the sole purpose of Added Alliterative Appeal, and I hate those names.

Huh. I don't see anything wrong with "spectacles", personally.

I don't really see the problem with spectacles either but wouldn't mind if Sexy Spectacles got a new name. Anyway, I think we can take care of Megane and keep it exampless without Sexy Spectacles being launched first although that probably makes things easier. Meganekko might need a TRS thread seeing how much it's getting misused. That Glasses Girl redirect should probably be cut. Although it is what Meganekko literally means, it will cause others to think this is any girl with glasses.

Other than Meganekko and Megane, any other glasses tropes with problems? Any other glasses tropes we need but don't have?

Edit: According to this thread here, Nerd Glasses apparently was supposed to be renamed to Opaque Nerd Glasses but no one made an effort to move the page after all this time. Is it okay to move it now and correct the wicks?

Re Nerd Glasses, it might be a better idea to take it back to TRS, expand to cover other nerdy glasses (like the stereotypical Hollywood Nerd "thick black plastic"), and soft-split the examples into Internal Subtropes.

If not, let's at least try for a Trope Transplant, because there's definitely Nerd Glasses that aren't Opaque Nerd Glasses.

Yes, opaque glasses are not the only glasses used to signify nerdiness. I think it would be better if we included internal subtropes instead of a Trope Transplant. We can take it back to TRS if there is enough room to make a thread to decide if we could expand it.

[up][up] Right now those tropes go

We were going to rename Nerd Glasses to Opaque Nerd Glasses but that thread died while this was started. (I fully supported the rename)

Anything to do with frames though is a whole other trope those go in Frames of Reference and Nerd Frames would be a subtrope of that.

Nerd Frames in anime would be any glasses that as big or bigger than the Anime Eyes themselves (usually round[1][2][3]) anything less means they are not that nerdy [4]. (both can be really cute depending on the example.) Thick frames do occasionally show up just really really rare.... So Maybe go with Thick Nerdy Frames as a name to avoid overlap with that?

Opaque-ness or reflecting happens to glasses in anime is 3 ways...

  • If they are opaque or shift to opaque it means Super Nerd [5][6][7]
  • The other way they might be opaque or shift opaque is if they go opaque when flustered or hiding something... [8]
  • Reflections when they are about to do something awesome or scary [9]

So yeah they should stay separate.

EDIT: example of the shifting

and a wide variety of frames and looks with glasses.

Yeah, it looks like the thread got autolocked at some point after my last post from no one posting.

So do we need to make a new thread or should the thread become unlocked, so we can decide whether to split or expand Nerd Glasses?

Well the rename crowner was done so rename away....

We can make a thread on Trope Transplanting the soon to be redirect though IMO it should be a supertrope to Thick Nerdy Frames and Opaque Nerd Glasses they are two different elements that can be used separately or together depending on the work... Almost always separately though.".

Or both don't have to be used at all in a "X has glasses automatically is labeled a nerd" type of thing.

I agree to making Nerd Glasses a supertrope to Opaque Nerd Glasses and Thick Framed Nerd Glasses. I'll be moving Nerd Glasses to Opaque Nerd Glasses then. After Nerd Glasses, the next trope I think the trope we have take of is Spectacled Sadist which is going through trope decay.

If you're just intending to make a supertrope, I don't think you need to take it through TRS, as in this case the rename was already approved. (I would wait for mod confirmation on this, though, as I'm not 100% certain.)

Nope, no need for another TRS if I'm understanding the situation correctly.

Check me on this: Nerd Glasses was s going to be split into two subtropes, Opaque Nerd Glasses and Thick Framed Nerd Glasses. You want to use the name Nerd Glasses for the Missing Supertrope, right?

That's ok to do without a fresh TRS. This is the sort of thing where the original name would probably have been kept as a disambig page anyway, rather tha redirecting to only one particular type. So instead of a bare disambig, we fill in the hole a Missing Supertrope should be in.

YKTTW for new-improved Nerd Glasses, currently in the "what should this be about?" stage. I think we will be able to scavenge a lot of examples from the existing Nerd Glasses and other glasses tropes, but I haven't started on that.

OK, launched Sexy Spectacles for "glasses as fetish / Charm Point". Would appreciate help going over Megane / Meganekko / etc for examples. Is somebody going to do the move for Opaque Nerd Glasses?

Nerd Glasses (supertrope) YKTTW moving very slowly. Input appreciated.

Can we move the examples off megane (and park them on the discussion page)? "Guy with glasses" isn't a trope, "cute guy with glasses" probably isn't a trope either, and it was originally intended to be an exampleless fanspeak page (I know, because I made it).
