What to do about Troper Tales.

Move the troper tales to their own, unaffiliated site that's still hosted by TV Tropes. Fetish Fuel's main article should stay, but everything else should go.

Like I said in the earlier thread, nowdays the mods have many more tools to use to to get tropers to not post personal ancedotes on the main page.

Harry Miste's suggestion seems most reasonable - that way, the honeypot still exists for those who want to post their Troper Tales, certain things can remain, and what could potentially be a massive strain on the mods (and a stain of sorts on how TV Tropes is viewed across the internet) is removed by not requiring them to proactively police TT. A couple of mods have pointed out in the previous thread that they avoid TT simply because it's so creepy, so it seems unfair to saddle them with trawling through it when it brings nothing to TV Tropes.

As Orca said, though, there are goons willing to help if you go with policing.

I say axe the bad ones and keep the good/neutral ones.

I can't see this working. No matter what, people will still have enormous fucking egos and TT is the perfect place to spread it. The only way I can see this getting better is by getting rid of it from the main site entirely.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but there is no "big lie", there is no "system". The universe is indifferent.

Honestly, I wouldn't miss FF at all. Just the fact that I have had to create FF subpages for some of the works I'm watching just to get that gunk off their main pages made me feel dirty.

As for TT, moving that off-site sounds good to me. Cutting down the very controversial ones is also acceptable.

Axe the obviously terrible ones (badass anything, noble bigot, incest yay, doggged nice guy, etc.) Leave decent ones, but make sure they are more carefully modded for stupid crap.

And nuke all the examples for Fetish Fuel. Leave it as a definition page and nothing more.

The thing is, we'd really be taking a lot on faith if we accepted the premise that All or even Most troper tales pages cause problems. For all of the bad ones that have been mentioned in the other thread, I'm sure an equal number of good/neutral articles can be found.

The question is how can we find out what the actual balance may be, and whether or not it would be prudent to make a drastic change that impacted all troper tales articles without that knowledge.

Most of the ones for Table Top Gaming are things that would make good examples in any other medium that wasn't so personalized. I'd say they're good.

I'll repeat this again: if a page on Troper Tales is good enough, we can move it to the forums. Keeping Troper Tales around will still cause more problems, no matter how much you police it.

Who's going to run this unaffiliated website?

Asked that question a page back; I suggested that the only affiliation is using the TV Tropes server, I suppose. If anyone else wanted to host it, that's also cool.

Yeah, the unaffiliated site idea doesn't work. It is just more work. Those pages wouldn't support the cost of hosting them from ad revenue, either. The thought of paying to be hassled by these pages is not particularly appealing.

So, you just want this idea executed by someone else so you yourself don't actually have to do any work or clean anything up yourself?

I haven't seen anything to back up this statement. If there are articles with positive value that exist currently, what would necessarily cause those good articles to degenerate once the bad articles were removed?

If the problem is that certain articles by their nature attract ickiness or grandstanding, removing those particular articles could be all it takes to solve the problem.

I think we should cut ties with Troper Tales entirely, meaning we shouldn't even host it on the server. I don't know who would be WILLING to host it, but hey, there's a market for everything.

Okay, fair point. I figured that connections between TV Tropes and Troper Tales.com would be inevitable, so we could afford that one connection.

So, you just want this idea executed by someone else so you yourself don't actually have to do any work or clean anything up yourself?

haha what

If Troper Tales has to stay, then I'm cool with helping. I never said anything about me being lazy.

I'd enthusiastically wave goodbye to the Fetish Fuel namespace. Maybe even a faux-redlink like This Troper to keep people from using it.

Not that I have any particular animosity towards Fetish Fuel, but I definitely agree that this isn't the wiki that should be hosting it.

As for Troper Tales, I like having it out there. It can be fun. I don't think it should go. It just needs policing and perma-redlinking for tropes where it's a really bad idea.

I just have one question: if we are to get rid of the Troper Tales pages for Fetish Fuel, should we do the same for the Perverse Sexual Lust pages? From what I've read, it's even worse than the Fetish Fuel pages.

Troper Tales: Keep the tolerable ones, axe the horrible ones.

Fetish Fuel should just go and not come back.

They're pretty much the same, so yes we should get rid of them as well.

No, there will not inevitably come evil. That's just Strawmaning. From what I've seen of them, the ones not on the topics of sex, or being a jackass seem to be perfectly fine. It's just the dirtier and more negative tropes that have issues.

I think your all missing the part with just how many of these Troper Tales are breeding ground for creeps, bigots, and other undesirables.

Before we hold anything to a vote, we need to start going through the pages (not all of them, but alot). It might be best to ax everything, and then slowely and carefully reopen it. A few subjects at a time and at most. That way you don't have pages about how internet cool they are and how sexy nine year olds in bathing suits look, and perhaps the original function can return.

Crown Description:

Don't bother to say "all of them". Name specific Troper Tales pages that should be axed. An "UP" Vote means you think it should be cut completely. A "DOWN" vote means it should be kept.

"I don't care for this page" is not a reason to cut it. "This page is unsalvagable. Kill it with fire" is.

PLEASE bullet point pro and con examples if there are more than one.
