Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning
Edited by kory on Dec 18th 2023 at 2:36:21 AM
Well I wouldn't think 150k would be big enough to warrant a split, but the HTML of the whole page is over 450k and it doesn't have that many subpages, so if it has a lot of links or weird markup it might be getting close to the danger zone.
The best course of action is to remove bad examples and remove commented-out examples.

"Rarity, are you okay? We gotta get you and your friends outta here soon!"Can't see any obvious splits, so I guess we go alphabetical?

she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportOnly ~700? Does Note Markup take up so much code that about 700 of them makes a page overly long? What if we replaced them with ()?
Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576I notice that Characters.Kirby Enemies is in the Administrivia.Overly Long Pages page. How should it be split?
I recommend having the major recurring enemies be moved to a new page. It's to make room for new minor enemies that debut in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.
Kirby is awesome. Here's what the HTML of the Cut And Paste Translation note looks like:
That's about 300 characters, then add another 100 for the trope link, 400*700 = 280K, and I think the limit is 300K.
Makes sense. So should we remove all those Notes?
Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576I've already went through this, if you use markup that adds a lot of background code like potholing or clickables, you can get a too-long with just 70000 characters or 700 lines in Source.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup- Thanks for the reminder!
In other ideas on what we could do instead of removing Note markup, splitting into "Tropes that became redirects" and "Tropes that were cut and remade" are at least somewhat smaller?
For example, The Alkazar was fully cut, instead of just being turned into a redirect like others?

Creepypasta cleanup got two major pages for JTK and SlenderThere are some example trees that can split off. Ace Combat, Bioshock (the full series), Borderlands, Castlevania, Danganronpa, Dragon Age, Fallout, Far Cry...just to give ideas.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportThe H-P subpage is big enough that it's honestly a bit surprising it's not giving the warning, so I would just re-cut everything into a four-way split.
Dropping Characters.Yakuza Like A Dragon here. It had the warning but it disappeared after I removed an entry for TRS cleanup. It is very close nonetheless.
I also recently added Sandbox.MCU Cosmic Threats, which triggered the warning when I edited it.
It was created like that by DoctorSleep and hardly edited. What's the Sandbox even for?
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupLooks like the "The Heroes of Tomorrow" section takes up maybe 40% of the page, so I'd split that off.
ETA: And done.

Looks like it might have been a draft for the character page of the same name, which has long since had more splits created. ~Doctor Sleep do you still need Sandbox.MCU Cosmic Threats or can it be cut?
It can be cut now.
Characters.Fire Emblem Engage has already been split into three subpages (Characters.Fire Emblem Engage Main Characters, Characters.Fire Emblem Engage Antagonists, Characters.Fire Emblem Engage Emblems) and is not in the red zone anymore, but I would like to split it up further into multiple subpages sorted by the nations so we don't have to worry about hitting the too long warning again.
When the page gets split like this, the only remaining folders will be In General and Playable Characters (In General), and I'll move the image in the former folder to be outside like in Characters.Fire Emblem Three Houses.

THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!We might have to check whether the character combinations will make the pages large enough. Can we have these pages be 40k in length or larger?

she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportCame here immediately when I saw it happen.
Kingdom Hearts II got hit with the too-long warning after I finished crosswicking trope exanples to it. The character count is 296819, according to an online counter.
I want to clarify that I crosswicked tropes suitable for a main work page instead of character-based ones (and I haven't seen that many of the latter kind being in the page beforehand).
My proposal: Since the page is already divided into three folders (A to F, G to Q, R to Z), I was thinking about splitting into two subpages, each holding approximately 149400 characters to evenly split the information. This would require dividing the contents of the second folder, but other than that this shouldn't be a hard process. What do you think?

135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300
Evil Is Hammy is over 150,000 characters and very slow. Should it be split like Large Ham?
