No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

I've added the examples to the trope page and to the relevant character pages. I also went ahead and added the Dark Mechanicum section that I had been working on to the Forces of Chaos page.

[up] It might not be right, but I split the Daemon Engines to their own folder...the original take felt really clunky. The information is solid.

Quick trope question: I was fixing the improper indentation of the Games Workshop examples on the Morph Weapon trope page and came across the following:

  • Obliterators use this trope and/or a combination of Shapeshifter Weapon and Swiss-Army Appendage: They can sprout/are welded to a wide assortment of weapons to counter any enemy type (such as flamers for infantry, plasma cannons for armor, and lascannons for vehicles) from their arms. Mutilators are the same deal, only with melee weapons where the Obliterators have ranged ones.

Is this actually an example. While Obliterator weapons do change, it is the body of the Obliterator that changes, not the weapon itself which would make it wholly a Shapeshifter Weapon not a Morph Weapon. What do other people think?

[up]Actually closer to Ikea Weaponry and Walking Armory for both Obliterators and Mutilators: Shapeshifter Weapon, Morph Weapon and Swiss-Army Appendage do not really apply. Rather than forming new weapons out of themselves or reshaping a particular weapon, they have absorbed a large number of weapons into their bodies. When they use one, they reshape their body to bring that weapon to the surface of an arm, while retracting whatever they had been using. Each of the viral hosts' bodies produces the required energy, ammunition, and fuel for each weapon indefinitely. Combined with their huge forms not requiring stocks, grips, bracing or other stabilizing elements, this drastically cuts down on the required space; but each weapon itself needs to be fully absorbed so there is an upper limit and choices will need to be made for loadouts.

The best set of details comes from the original Inquisitor tabletop game from around 3rd edition; it has rules for the Obliterator virus in stages in one of the supplements. While an infectee can initially just absorb pistols and small blades for convenience and concealment, eventually they move up to multiple basic and heavy weapons and begin producing ammo/fuel/energy for any weapon melded with their flesh; all the while, they grow increasingly massive, strong and resilient, their mental faculties suffer, and their skin turns into living Warp-metal.

[up]Yeah being a literal Walking Armory would probably best describe them. I deleted the entry on the Morph Weapon page for not being an example with a link to this thread.

So, we now know a bit more about the whole 'Rubicon Primaris' thing. Basically it's a surgical procedure made up by the Head Toasterfucker himself, Belisarius Cawl, meant to overcome the primary weakness of the Primaris Marines (inexperience) by bolstering vanilla marines with the Primaris enhancements. He estimates that this procedure, when perfected, will only have a teensy failure rate of 61.9 %. Papa Smurf, wanting to try and build bridges between the Primaris and the 'old' Space Marines, chose to undergo an experimental version of the procedure. He died for a little bit, but pulled through.

That's the thing though, sourcebooks aren't really prose but the basic information needed to play in character so don't really need to be spoilered.

Double post because[awesome][awesome][awesome]

Fire Relief – The Local Warhammer Community Steps In

We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: the Warhammer Community is made up of truly awesome individuals. Case in point – there’s a group of Warhammer hobbyists in California doing their utmost to spread some cheer in the wake of a local tragedy.

You may or may not be aware of the recent fires that have swept through California destroying lives and property in one of the most serious disasters to affect the state in decades. Among the affected communities were many Warhammer fans who lost not only their homes but also their collections of Warhammer miniatures. As any of us would testify, our armies are some of our most prized possessions – careful collections amassed through the years, lovingly built and painted over thousands of hours. Certainly not as important as our homes (though we’re sure some of you might disagree!), but their loss would undoubtedly make a heartbreaking situation worse.

In the aftermath of the fire, a group of Californian Warhammer hobbyists, headed up by the Independent Characters podcast crew, have been coordinating donations from other Warhammer fans from around the world to replace the models lost in the fire.

As many of us watched in horror, the Butte County Fire raged out of control and destroyed thousands of homes, including the entire town of Paradise, California. Even from where I live, about three hours South of where the fire was, we were blanketed in smoke that made the air quality so bad, stores were running out of air filter masks. When a member of a local gaming group from the Paradise area reached out to me to ask if they could talk about it on our community page, I felt like we could do better than that.

If there is one thing I have seen in my time with the Warhammer hobby, it is that our members are incredibly generous and caring. Along with my own donations towards replacing the destroyed collections, and in an effort to help out our fellow hobbyists, I thought I could use the voice and reach of The Independent Characters to send out a message for assistance far and wide. I cannot imagine the loss the victims of this fire have gone through. And while this effort is a long way from replacing everything they’ve lost, we can at least help them replace some fun!

– Carl Tuttle, Independent Characters

Hearing this, we knew we had to help, and we will be sending each of the affected hobbyists a brand new army.

To help with the wider relief efforts, we’ll also be running a special “Hang Out and Paint For Charity” live show on our Twitch channel this coming January. On the show, members of the Warhammer Community team and the Warhammer painting studio will each be painting up a hero, selected by the affected hobbyists, to accompany their new army.

Now, here’s where we need your help: during the show, you’ll be able to contribute to the local California fire relief charity, with all Twitch Bits generated during the show going to help rebuild and support all the affected families.

Again, we’d like to thank the awesome people in the Warhammer community in California for all their efforts so far. If you’d like to contribute directly, the Independent Characters have set up a page with more information about how to get involved.

This sounds like way too much extrapolation and hyperbole based off one line of speculation in a book that is probably long since obsolete. Should I pull it?

Does that example even count as Nothing Is Scarier as it isn't really meant to scare the audience (which is the point of the trope). It is more of a Cryptic Background Reference if a source for it can be found (I do seem to remember it from somewhere).

Double post because there is a 40K animated series coming

Holy animated Adeptus Astartes, we’ve only gone and done it – we’re hard at work on an all-new Warhammer 40,000 animated series.

Yup. You read that right.

We’re bringing the grim darkness of the far future to life like never before. Get ready for epic battle, heroic sacrifice, loads of explosions, brutal close-combat chainsword duels, and some pathos-laden dialogue that’ll fill your belly with fire and stretch your heart strings to breaking.

‘Angels of Death’, will follow the visceral exploits of a band of Blood Angels Space Marines as they face Mankind’s enemies, death and worse – the dreaded Black Rage. To ensure the story is suitably grimdark, we’ve called upon the talents of some of Black Library’s finest authors. Together, they’re forging an epic tale for the animators to realise.

Speaking of which, some of you might be familiar with the Helsreach fan film, based on the Black Library novel of the same name. If you thought that was cool, you were right! We enjoyed it so much that we knew we had to team up with the very same team to deliver Angels of Death. Turns out, Helsreach wasn’t even close to their A-game!

But hey, don’t just take our word for it…

Yeah, it's said in the Horus Heresy that the Tyranids were attracted to the Milky Way while they were hibernating in dark space, so the "invading refugees" thing is done.

Another trope question. Agent Peacock is listed on the Craftworlds page but as this pretty much applies to all the Aeldari (except Haemonculi) should it be moved to the general Aeldari page and rewritten?
