YMMV / Uncle from Another World

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • Story, by Mayu Maeshima, is a kickass theme that perfectly fits the video game adventurer hero.
    • The ED sung by Yuka Iguchi is one.
    • While only a brief snippet, the cover of "Dreams Dreams" by Mabel (voiced by Aoi Yūki) was lovely to hear.
  • Cargo Ship: Although there are several camps who like to ship Uncle with each of his female companions, there are also quite a few fans who would pair him with his Sega Saturn instead, given his extreme fanboyism.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Uncle has clearly something going on with him; he suffers from a severe case of Oblivious to Love and No Social Skills, has a hyperfocus in anything Sega-related, and his mind tends to wander to odd places.
  • Iron Woobie: The titular Uncle. He didn't have it easy either in the real world (where he was a friendless otaku with very poor social skills) or in the fantasy one (where he was shunned, persecuted, and nearly killed a lot of times because he was so ugly people thought he was an orc, plus dealing with characters of unfamiliar behavior for him like the Tsundere Elf), and even after he returns from his coma in 2017 he has to deal with adapting to a very different world from the one where he lived before his accident (by example, Sega, his favorite videogame company, is irrelevant in the current industry) in which the only family member that cares about him is his nephew Takafumi. Despite this, Uncle remains optimistic and doesn't let his bad experiences hinder him, trying to adapt to the modern world the best he can with Takafumi's help.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Quite a sizable portion of the anime's audience who haven't heard of the manga before only picked up the anime to see what the deal is with this Uncle character and his shenanigans. That he's voiced by Takehito Koyasu also helps.
    • Some viewers only watch episodes for the Fantasy segments that take place on Granbahamal. Others are only interested in the Slice of Life and Sega references that occur during the planet Earth skits.
  • Ugly Cute: Uncle's ugliness is played a lot through the series (he normally looks average, but in some scenes, his face turns very gonkish for comedic or dramatic effect), however, given his generally nice disposition and all the crap he had to go through it's easy to ignore this aspect of him and find him endearing instead.
