- Accidental Aesop: Besides "Don't take superficial compliments too seriously and become conceited", this episode is basically telling the audience:
- "Don't ever do things without an adult's help, even if they encouraged you to do it, because you'll cause destruction and/or possibly death."
- "Never build a house at the end of a train track."
- Alternative Character Interpretation: While some believe that the cleaner was the cause of Thomas' crashing into the stationmaster's house, others believe that Thomas brought the accident upon himself in the first place since he thought he could go without his driver.
- Broken Aesop: The story is going for a cautionary tale about pride, but the careless cleaner obliviously changing Thomas' controls means that his humiliating experience with the stationmaster's house would have happened anyway.
- Broken Base: The ending has cast a divisive reputation over this entire episode. One group dislikes this episode because they believe Thomas was unfairly blamed for the accident because of the careless cleaner who receives no punishment, while another believes he needed to be humbled after taking his driver's joke about not needing him anymore too seriously for his own good. A third group believes Thomas should not have been scolded for the accident, but acknowledges that he should have realised that his driver was joking.
- Draco in Leather Pants: While Thomas did get unfairly blamed for the accident, some fans ignore the fact that he took his driver's joke about not needing him anymore way too seriously, as well as him becoming cocky about it and dismissing Percy and Toby's warnings about what would happen if he did go without his driver
- Funny Moments: "Just look what you've done to our breakfast!"
- Hilarious in Hindsight: The premise of the story (Thomas believing he can drive by himself) can seem like a preemptive Take That! at Seasons 8-16, as well as current seasons where the engines can seemingly do anything without their driver and fireman. Even in current seasons the presence of drivers and fireman seem to have become more scarce and inconsistent.
- Informed Wrongness: The story lays the blame on Thomas for the accident, even though it's clearly the fault of the cleaner who messed with his controls.
- Memetic Mutation: "Look What You've Done To Our Breakfast!" is one of the biggest memes in the show for it's Comically Missing the Point factor.
- Never Live It Down: The stationmaster's wife berating Thomas for ruining her family's breakfast instead of for wrecking their house.
- One-Scene Wonder: The stationmaster's wife, due to her infamous "Just look what you've done to our breakfast!" line.
- Special Effect Failure: Thomas' eyes are off-centre for most of the episode.
- Unintentionally Sympathetic: Thomas. While he was being cocky about not needing his driver and should have realised that his driver was joking, some fans are sympathetic to him due to the fact the careless cleaner had meddled with his controls which led to Thomas getting blamed for the accident while the cleaner receives no punishment.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
- The stationmaster and his wife. Tying into the anonymous idiot who chose the end of a train track of all places to build their house, they could have avoided their situation if they had foreseen the obvious danger in tracks heading directly towards their house with no buffers for protection and alerted railway workers, which they somehow failed to do.
- Percy and Toby smiling while Thomas is being scolded after his accident doesn't make them look good.
- Donald and Douglas come to free Thomas from the wreckage, but they laugh at him while doing so.
