YMMV / The Multiversity

Go To

  • Complete Monster:
    • Society of Super-Heroes: Conquerors from the Counter-World! #1: Vandal Savage from Earth-40—heavily implied to be Cain himself—is a psychotic immortal who has been conquering for centuries and instituting Rape, Pillage, and Burn as a system of oppressive government. Every 100,000 years, Earth-20 and Earth-40 occupy the same space. Vandal—after biting out the throat of a scientist who can't satisfactorily explain this phenomenon—decides to conquer these other worlds. After Vandal and his Society successfully conquer Earth-20, they face the Society of Super-Heroes. Immortal Man manages to kill Vandal—to the latter's delight, as spilling an immortal's blood summons Niczhuotan, the destroyer of worlds.
    • Pax Americana #1: Doctor Charles Eden is the Vice President of the United States of Earth-4, serving under the beloved President Harley, whose coveting of his boss's position drives him to treason and murder. Learning that his boss plans to have himself killed by the hero Peacemaker and then resurrected by Captain Adam to prove that there is no problem in the world the latter can't solve, Eden co-opts the process to make sure Harley stays dead. Capturing and torturing Peacemaker, Eden then sends his enforcer, Sarge Steel, to sabotage the particle accelerator where Adam lives, killing the scientists who maintain it and seemingly Adam himself. Riding the nation's grief and newfound anti-superhero rage into the White House, Eden happily throws away an opportunity for true world harmony to advance himself.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Earth-23's Nubia as Wonder Woman. While the original Nubia was already something of a fan favorite, this version of her has served as the design basis for every version that's appeared since.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Georgia Sivana's desire to be a beautiful teenage girl and her superpowered form consisting of a pair of ridiculously large breasts in a skimpy parody of Mary Marvel's costume becomes extremely uncomfortable to think about after Thunderworld #1's artist Cameron Stewart was outed as a sexual predator who targeted and groomed younger women.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The thought of making the Superman from Earth-45 Darker and Edgier was intended to be a shot at companies like Warner Bros and Nether Realm Studios (and possibly Sony due to their take on Spider-Man) for pandering to Emo Teen audiences that were accustomed to Batman. After a mixture of Warner Bros. leaning hard into the critic-friendly Lighter and Softer tones and the commentary seen in The Boys (2019), it now seems more likely that a Superman created by committee would be insufferably upbeat.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The Seven Unknown Earths (14, 24, 25, 27, 28, 46, and 49) seven universes that were sealed off from the greater Multiverse by the Monitors for some mysterious purpose, had the potential for a greater storyline. Morrison specifically left these worlds blank for other writers to use if they were interested. The map of the Multiverse even gave a hint that Earth-14 might've actually been two Earths (to continue Morrison's trend of a secret 8th aspect whenever they used the number 7). That potential got squandered twofold when:
    • Peter Tomasi turned Earth-14 into a world home to the Justice League of Assassins, simply to have another alternate Superman to throw into his critically underwhelming Multiplicity story.
    • The rest of the Earths were then used to simply give homes to preexisting stories (Earth-25 for America's Best Comics, Earth-24 for DC Comics Bombshells, etc.). The only slight exception to this was Earth-46, which was used to release a new Batman story titled Batman: The Gargoyle of Gotham. But overall, it simply squanders the mystery Morrison tried to set the foundation for, with it being left unexplained why the Monitors kept these worlds locked down.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Overman is a Nazi version of Superman, raised by Hitler to be his own weapon to take over the world. Despite this, it's clearly shown that Overman has a conscience and he's legitimately appalled by the atrocities Hitler's forces have committed. However, for as much as readers are supposed to feel bad for him due to his immense levels of guilt and the fact he's not quite as loathsome as the New Reichsmen, there's the matter of Overman's complacency. He saw early on what Hitler and the Nazis were doing, saw all of the deaths, and did nothing. For all of his power, Overman instead chose to protect the status quo for decades which led to much more destruction when the persecuted finally fought back. Even if Overman finally did something by secretly helping the Freedom Fighters, his lack of action only means things are going to get much worse and many more people will die.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Symbolic?: The Empty Hand, the personification of our cynicism against superheroes, resurrects Darkseid, who was previously established by Morrison themself to be an Eldritch Abomination Made of Evil. We won't let evil and death leave our stories.
