YMMV / One Piece Film: Red

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: During the scene where Luffy and Uta hug after reuniting, it briefly cuts to Nami, who has a strange look on her face. Fans quickly interpreted this as Nami being jealous, seeing as she and Luffy have received a fair amount of Ship Tease over the years, especially in previous films such as Strong World and Gold.
  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Given that it's a musical instead of a typical One Piece experience, many expected that it would flop. As of November 6, 2022 it is the ninth highest-grossing movie in Japanese history, and the sixth highest-grossing animated movie. While it predictably wasn't nearly as successful outside of Japan, it did far better than most expected. Its opening day alone in the States made four times the total domestic revenue of Stampede and even ended up beating Black Adam (2022) at the box officenote .
  • Awesome Music: About a third of the movie is spent on the songs, all of which are fantastic. Special mention goes to the main theme New Genesis which managed to top Apple Music's Top 100 Global playlist.
    • Tot Musica, the epic, dramatic and stunningly beautiful Villain Song of fist-pumping intensity, containing everything from Dramatic Timpani to Nordic runic lyrics (not to mention a gorgeous music video), also warrants specific mention here for the sheer awesomeness and raw passion emanating through and through.
    • The final fight against Tot Musica is accompanied by Our New Era; a blood-pumping song full of hype as the Straw Hat Pirates and the Red Hair Pirates fight Tot Musica in tandem within both worlds. Special mention goes to both moments where the leitmotif of "We Are!" kicks in, the second of which accompanies Shanks' and Gear 5 Luffy's final attack on Tot Musica.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The second trailer reveals that Uta was adopted by Shanks and isn't his biological daughter, something that pretty much everyone assumed to be the case from the start.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Twofold. In Japan the movie gained a lot of traction when it was announced that the music would be done by singer Ado. Outside of Japan, where Ado was more or less unknown, the movie attracted particular interest because of Shanks' prominence in advertising, primarily because of the promise of further details on his character.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Once she recognizes him, Uta immediately gives Luffy a hug, overjoyed to see him.
    • Shanks responding to the Marines asking him to hand over Uta by releasing a wave of Conqueror's Haki strong enough to knock out some Vice Admirals.
  • Memetic Molester: A lot of fan art from the Japanese fandom tends to play up Uta's (implied) feelings towards Luffy to yandere-tier obsession, likely due to the fact that Uta was especially determined to keep Luffy trapped in Uta World, even going as far as to ask him to quit being a pirate and stay with her while lingering around Luffy's unconscious body in the real world.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • The second teasers reveal that, not only would the film directly involve Shanks, but that Uta would be his daughter shocked many fans.
    • Even more so when the official trailer reveals Luffy already knows her since they were childhood friends.
    • The Mood Whiplash regarding Uta’s character and The Reveal of her plan to essentially euthanise the entire planet to spare them from suffering, caught quite a lot of people off guard.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Following the official trailer, some people have criticized Red for being another movie involving someone one of the Straw Hats knew from their childhood.
  • The Un-Twist: Given how he's the closest thing the main series has to a Big Good, pretty much no one was fooled by the claims that Shanks massacred Elegia and correctly guessed that Uta was in some way responsible. The Reveal that Uta already found this out a year before the film started, and this being what truly broke her, is considerably more shocking, however.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: With the fact that Uta is also a talented musician that had been isolated for many years after a horrific tragedy took her away from her crew, it's slightly disappointing that there isn't any scenes of her interacting with Brook in any capacity. Even more so that the OST for Red includes an Ado cover of Bink's Sake, and is the only one of Ado's songs that isn't actually sung in the film itself.
  • Woobie: Uta, big time. Talk about a Tragic Villain.
