YMMV / High School Star Musical

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Ho Yay: Due to the nature of the show there are only two named female characters, and they're both younger than the main cast.
    • Hoshitani applied to Ayanagi because he saw Otori dancing and thought it was beautiful. His admiration for this high schooler he doesn't realize is Otori is his driving motivation - to be on stage with that high schooler. Late in the first season, they return to that spot and dance together. Season 2 starts with Hoshitani in that spot, and Otori comes and talks to him. In the middle of the season, when he realizes that Otori is that high schooler, his reaction is 100% teen with a crush - lots of stammering, Crush Blush, practicing how to talk to him, etc. And Otori seems to reciprocate. This ship was already out of the territory of Ho Yay at that point - but then in the season finale, Otori seems to heal Hoshitani's injury with his love, and tells Hoshitani that when he first saw him dance, "you stole my heart". Then, he kneels and gives Hoshitani his hair cord, the final "takaramono" of the season's motif. And then they perform a romantic duet together.
    • It is implied that when Otori was in Haruto's team, they had a relationship similar to how Otori now feels for Hoshitani. In s2e6, when Otori tells Haruto how he feels about Hoshitani, watching him, and Haruto says, "I see... so he's your precious student," the emotion in his voice is very touching.
    • Uozumi is clearly Haruto's ex, who's not over him, and also in love with Otori.
    • Hoshitani and Nayuki meet on the first day of class and immediately hit it off. They accidentally go on a date in episode 10 and don't realize it until halfway through, and in season 1 episode 11 Nayuki actually confesses his love, when they're alone together in a classroom before their important performance. Hoshitani... doesn't get it.
      • And then there's the official art, which speaks for itself.
      • When Nayuki starts hanging out with Ugawa more than Hoshitani in season 2, Hoshitani says, "Why do I feel like I've been dumped?"
    • Tengenji and Tsukigami have their fair share of Belligerent Sexual Tension, and in episode 11 Tengenji calls Tsukigami cute. Throughout the series, Tengenji has occasionally addressed Tsukigami by his first name with an endearing honorific "Kaito-chan". Tsukigami, in turn, calls Tengenji "Kakeru-kun" in Volume 2's drama CD.
    • Hiiragi and Ootori, to varying degrees. The revelation that they're twins caused some to abandon ship, but others have decided that it makes it hotter - or they just don't care. Though, season 2 has Hiiragi playing fairy-godmother to Hoshitani's Cinderella, calling Otori Hoshitani's prince, not his own.
    • There are also two "Prince x Knight" style pairings:
      • Tatsumi and Sawatari. They have been inseparable since birth, are childhood friends, classmates, roommates and teammates. Tatsumi plays the role of an exotic princess back in his middle school's drama club and has been called "Princess" since then, and with how Sawatari constantly stays by Tatsumi's side and takes care of him, people eventually nickname him "Knight". Their duet, The Elegance, throws hints like crazy: "We stare at each other's special — We don't want anything else — From that day, hearts were stolen forever — We sing..."
      • It seems that most of Hachiya's life revolves around Ageha. He takes care of Ageha, supports him, makes sure he eats well (or at all), pushes him as the top star of their team, brings him food and drinks, etc. For his part Ageha doesn't seem to reciprocate the attention, but he addresses Hachiya by his given name "Sou", something that is reserved for his close friends. Their duet Nervous-Aid sounds a lot like unrequited love, with Hachiya reassuring Ageha that he'll be with him even as Ageha only has eyes for his "god", Haruto.
    • Speaking of Ageha, his feelings about Haruto just scream Yandere. He even acts creepy toward the younger Tsukigami just because they share "the same blood".
