YMMV / Faust: Love of the Damned

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Wait, this is based on a comic? And one that was made half a decade before Spawn?!
  • Awesome Music: The movie's quality is dubious, but the suitably edgy soundtrack featuring the likes of Sepultura, Machine Head, Deicide, and others, is not.
  • Complete Monster: M is the white-haired, infernal leader of The Hand, an occult Satanic criminal organization with ties to corrupt government officials that he uses to spread evil in the world. After ordering his goons to brutally murder the girlfriend of artist John Jaspers, M offers the despair-filled Jaspers demonic power in exchange for his soul, intending to use Jaspers as his unwitting instrument of death, burying Jaspers alive after he refuses to kill any longer. M's ultimate plan is to release the Homunculus, a giant demon serpent who will bring Hell on Earth. Having raped Dr. Jade de Camp in the past as a child in order to later impregnate her with his demonic spawn, M brainwashes a kindhearted detective to kidnap her. No less ruthless towards his lackeys, from briefly melting his wife Claire, to forcing his cultists to sacrifice themselves en masse to summon the Homunculus, Claire is also burned alive to complete the summoning. Forcing Jaspers to watch as he rapes Jade, once when his plan is foiled, M uses his contract on Jaspers's soul to bargain for the soul of Jade's unborn child with the promise of "releasing" Jaspers. Nevermind Jade being mind raped into becoming an extreme nymphomaniac who screams about WANTING to be raped by M in front of Jaspers (she gets better, though).
  • Evil Is Cool: Let's face it: the movie deserves all the ridicule it gets, but the summoning ritual scene in the climax is damned impressive.
  • Narm: Especially the lead is a laugh riot whenever he tries to emote something serious outside of the costume ("Life, death, happy, sad..." "Jaaaaade!").
  • Nausea Fuel: M turning his mistress Claire into a blob puddle by inflating her breasts and butt and most of the summoning ritual for the Homunculus, which includes M pulling out a snake from a cultist's navel and having it slide down the mouth of another cultist.
  • So Bad, It's Good: The movie is a hilarious combination of either utterly narmful or completely hamtastic acting, rock music drowning out most of the scenes, fights that go back and forth between cartoonish and horrific, painfully dated special effects, and a lot of gratuitous sex and violence.
  • Special Effects Failure: Many throughout the movie, but the Homunculus in particular is a particularly bad case of dated CGI that probably looked unconvincing even upon release.
  • Strangled by the Red String: There's little reason for Jade to be in love with Jaspers since she was his psychologist for the brief time he was in a mental institution and had little interaction with him outside of that. It's better explained in the source material, where Jaspers was stated to be Jade's lover even before he donned the costume. In the film, Jaspers had a previous girlfriend separate from Jade whose murder serves as the catalyst to his Deal with the Devil.
