Trivia / Grimsby

  • Box Office Bomb: Easily the biggest bomb of Sacha Baron Cohen's career. It grossed just $3.5 million on its opening weekend in the United States, against a budget of $35 million (compare that to the opening weekend of Baron Cohen's prior work, The Dictator, which grossed $17.4 million on its opening weekend). Domestically, in the United Kingdom, it did even worse, opening at $2.6 million on its first weekend (while The Dictator grossed $7.8 million on opening weekend). Worldwide it grossed just $25,182,929 in total by the end of it's theatrical run.
  • Cast the Expert: Louis Leterrier was hired to direct because Sacha Baron Cohen wanted the action sequences to be as polished as possible.
  • Corpsing: When Nobby's son Jason screams in frustration at his dad confusing him name again, his brother Luke can be seen cracking up just before the shot changes.
  • Fake Russian: As he often does, Scott Adkins plays one, in this case the hitman Lukashenko.
  • Real-Life Relative: Jodie is played by Isla Fisher, the real-life wife of Sacha Baron Cohen.
  • Star-Derailing Role: Grimsby was Sacha Baron Cohen's next attempt at creating original material after the failure of The Dictator and he brought his Ali G character back to regain esteem. The film instead was a Box Office Bomb (see above) and received even worse reviews than The Dictator, killing his film career for the next few years until 2020, when he underwent a Career Resurrection by bringing back his iconic character Borat and co-starring as Abbie Hoffman in Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7.
